온 카와라의 작품은 예술품인 동시에 개인의 일상기록이자 문화자원으로서 가치를 갖고 있다. 작가는 주도면밀한 계획성을 바탕으로 자신의 일상을 주제로 한 작품을 선보였다. 수없이 반... 온 카와라의 작품은 예술품인 동시에 개인의 일상기록이자 문화자원으로서 가치를 갖고 있다. 작가는 주도면밀한 계획성을 바탕으로 자신의 일상을 주제로 한 작품을 선보였다. 수없이 반복되는 일상 중 자신이 언제 어디에서 일어나 누구를 만났고, 무엇을 읽었으며, 어디를 다녀왔는지 등 몇 가지 주제를 선택해 기록하였다. 회화 혹은 설치의 형태로 개인의 삶을 이야기한 예술가들과는 달리 온 카와라는 일기 형식으로 자신의 삶을 담아냈다. 또 사람들이 쉽게 접할 수 있는 사회적 매체를 사용해 자신의 삶을 객관화시켜 다른 시각예술에서는 볼 수 없는 독자적인 미학과 개성을 드러내었다. 이처럼 온 카와라는 계획적으로 전략을 세워 자신의 일상에 대한 기록을 작품으로 생산하였다. 온 카와라는 기록자로 생산과 수집 이외에도 신문과 지도, 엽서, 전보 등의 매체를 이용해 자신의 일상을 지속해서 기록하였다. 개인의 일상을 기록한 온 카와라는 사회적 매체를 활용해 발언하는 데에도 적극적인 자세를 취하며 기록자의 면모를 강하게 나타내었다. 온 카와라의 작품은 기존에 예술작품으로 평가받은 예술적 가치를 비롯해 기록적인 면과 문화자원의 시각에서도 여러 가치가 있다. 온 카와라의 작품에 담긴 내용은 작가 개인뿐 아니라 주변인에 대한 정보를 제공해 정보적·증거적 가치를 담고 있다. 사회에 대한 관심과 연민, 부조리 등을 함께 제시해 여러 사건에 대해 발언하고 참여하도록 이끄는 사회적 가치를 드러낸다. 또 역사를 기록한 가치 있는 기록물로 평가할 수 있고, 현재뿐 아니라 앞으로 새로운 문화를 이해하고 창조하는 데 활용 가능한 문화자원으로도 가치가 있다. 온 카와라의 사례에서 보면 개인이 남긴 일상기록은 삶의 모든 영역에 걸쳐 생산될 수 있다. 개인이 자신의 일상을 남긴 것이 기록으로 인정되려면 체계적인 방법을 통해 지속하여야 하고, 동일한 방법론을 유지해야 한다. 더불어 기록은 주체뿐 아니라 사회적 상황과 맥락을 담아야 한다. 개인기록물이 문화자원으로 평가받기 위해서는 사회적 공감대를 얻어 역사적 기록물로 인정받고, 다른 기록에서는 볼 수 없는 유일성을 지녀야 한다. 이러한 특성을 바탕으로 앞으로 보존될 가치를 갖게 되면 기록물뿐 아니라 문화자원으로도 인정받을 수 있다. 본 논문의 연구 대상인 온 카와라의 작품은 미술가가 자신의 일상을 작품으로 기록한 특수한 사례이지만, 개인의 일상기록이 문화자원으로 평가받으면 시대상을 드러내 당대를 재구성하고 역사 연구자들에게 도움을 줄 수 있다. 나아가 사회가 발전하고 상호 소통될 수 있는 역할을 수행하며 공론의 장을 마련할 수 있다. 본 연구를 통해 개인이 기록자로 일상을 기록하는 범위를 확대하고, 더 많은 개인의 일상기록이 문화자원으로 평가받고 가치를 인정받아 다양하게 연구되고 활용되기를 기대해 본다.

While other artists expressed their own life with paintings or installations, On Kawara depicted his own life with his diary. By using this familiar type of medium he objectifies his life, which enables his works to show aesthetic value and originality. On Kawara constantly recorded his daily life, using other type of medium: maps, postcards and telegrams. Although he was occupied with recording his own everyday life, he was in active in forming public opinions on various issues through social media. On Kawara’s works, which exhibit a distinctive characteristic of himself, would be classified as records for an individual since it includes an individual’s daily life and selected issues. On Kawara’s records are significant resources in many ways. Those offer information about people surrounding On Kawara as well as him. His artworks express concern for or expose irrationality of his society, which encourages ordinary people to have a voice and take part in public affairs. Those are precious historical records as well as works of art. In addition, it is a useful cultural resource to understand the present day and create new culture in the future. If an individual records one’s own daily life in a systematic way, then the material can be used to understand and study historical events and the era.
