This is about classes of art appreciation in order to understand symbolization which is seen from tigers in folk painting. The study purpose is to understand symbolization and furthermore, make middle school students realize importance of wisdom and aesthetic consciousness of ancestors contained in traditional painting.
For this, in chapter 2, symbolization included in tigers of folk painting and change courses of tiger pictures were considered theoretically. Also, based on 10 kinds of art textbooks of middle schools so as to analyze the current states of implementing appreciation education of folk painting at schools, it was intended to examine how the appreciation education of folk painting is dealt with per part of art textbooks. At the result, because artworks of folk painting in the art textbooks are mostly biased to expression areas, to grasp and appreciate symbolization included in the artworks was deficient.
Along with the analysis of the textbooks, targeting current teachers and students, a survey was conducted. From the result, although necessity of the appreciation education of symbolism of the tigers of folk painting is recognized somewhat, it is not realized briskly due to various conditions. Therefore, it could be known that students’ recognition of the tigers in folk painting was low. Hence, it could be confirmed that it is necessary to develop appreciation programs to understand symbolism of them so that the programs can be used at schools.
In chapter 3, based on the analysis contents of chapter 2, the appreciation programs were developed and applied. Besides, to be practically helpful for the utilization at schools, the result of the programs was analyzed, and the teaching methods were studied. The appreciation programs in this are composed of an “appreciation program to understand shamanistic symbolization”, an “appreciation program to understand lucky symbolization, and an “appreciation program to understand humorous symbolization focused on symbolic meanings embedded in the tigers of folk painting.
With the study result, in chapter 4, education effects and activation plans of the appreciation programs to understand symbolism of the tigers in the folk painting were proposed. Above all, as the education effects, first, because diverse hopes and desires of general people are expressed in the tigers, courses to explore them, namely, formative analysis ability and interpretation ability can be increased through “reading artworks”. Second, diverse creation activities to internalize symbolism through the tiger appreciation in folk painting can heighten expressiveness, creative ability, and imagination of learners. These courses were effective for learners to understand the subject matter called “tigers” and symbolic meaning in it. Third, via understanding and interest in artworks, it could be confirmed that concern for folk painting of other subject matters and traditional painting was increased.
Activation plans to enhance the educational effects were proposed like the next. First, folk painting and other fields, in other words, appreciation integrated with various formed tigers which can be seen in architecture, crafts, and sculpture should be realized. Second, development of art teachers’ competence is necessary so that appreciation contents on folk painting in textbooks can be supplemented and diverse visual materials can be developed. Third, to understand the tigers in folk painting from various angles, where an ethnic material called “tigers” was pictorialized, the range of modern utilization should be expanded such as appreciation of artworks interpreted modernly and diverse production of artworks with various materials and media.
In this , by providing different appreciation learning methods based on the characteristics of each symbolism of the appreciation programs to understand symbolization of the tigers in folk painting; chances to appreciate artworks from various angles were made to be expanded. Additionally, through them, in modern society caused from informatization and diversification, right ability of recognition and appreciation on each medium can be enhanced. Plus, by deepening cultural understanding, harmony with tradition and modern culture can be realized. It is hoped that the appreciation education programs studied in this can be used actively in art education so as to raise visual literacy of adolescents in diverse information media and improve attitude to succeed and develop the ability.
