일본어에는 현재 1만상의 외래어가 사용되어지고 있다. 이러한 외래어는 가타카나로 표기되어지고 있고 이러한 것을 통틀어 가타카나語라고 부른다. 가타카나語는 일본인조차 그 의미 설명이 어려운 것이 존재하며, 일상생활에서의 쇼핑이나 텔레비전, 신문, 책 등에서 눈에 띄는 가타카나語의 표기와 의미는 일본어 학습자에게 있어서는 더욱 어려운 분야로 다가온다. 이러한 가타카나語에 관한 일본인의 언어문화 습관에 대한 실태와 경향에 관한 분석이 이루어진다.
이와 같은 연구목적을 수행하기 위하여 먼저 가타카나語란 무엇인가에 대한 개괄적인 설명이 제시된다. 자세히 가타카나의 기원, 가타카나語의 범위, 가타카나와 외래어, 가타카나의 표기에 대해 제시된다. 다음으로 가타나카語에 관한 일본인의 문화의식을 알아보기 위하여 문화청자료를 토대로 가타카나語사용에 관한 일본인의 의식에 대해서 분석하였다. 또한 원어와는 다른 의미로 사용되는, 즉 일본 독자적인 의미로 사용하는 가타카나語와 독자적으로 만들어 사용하는 和製가타카나語에 관하여 분석하였다. 마지막으로 가타카나語의 단축어에 관한 일정한 패턴에 대해서 분석하였다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 토대로 앞으로 국제화가 되어감에 따라 그 사용이 더욱 확대되고 다양화해가는 가타카나語에 대한 다각적이고 체계적인 연구가 이루어져야 될 것이다.

Approximately a million foreign words are currently employed in Japanese language. These foreign words are written by Katakana, which also belong to Katakana language. Some Katakana languages are difficult to understand even for Japanese people. Likewise, Japanese learners have a difficulty with writing and meaning of Katakana language appeared in daily living, such as shopping, TV, news, and books. Therefore, this study examines status and tendency of language habits of Japanese people in terms of Japanese culture.
To achieve the study objective, Katakana language is first introduced in detail: origin of Katakana, scope of Katakana language, foreign words in Katakana, and writing in Katakana. Then, Japanese people's thought about Katakana language is analyzed based on data from the Agency for Cultural Affairs in order to examine cultural perception of Japanese people on the usage of Katakana language.
In addition, this study analyzes Katakana language that is different from original words, that is, Katakana language with the own meaning for Japanese and Gairaigo(和製Katakana) that is created by Japanese to transcribe words from foreign languages. Finally, specific pattern of contraction form of Katakana language is analyzed. Based on the results of this study, more multilateral and organized studies should be followed regarding Katakana language that is being more expanded and diversified as globalization.
