특허정보란 특허 출원된 기술 내용 및 권리로 주장된 사항, 출원인 및 발명자 등의 인적사항, 기타 서지사항 등에 대한 정보를 의미한다. 특허와 동일하게 기술 내용을 권리의 대상으로 하는 실용신안에 관한 정보도 특허정보의 범주에 포함되는 것으로 본다.
특허정보는 기술 정보적 목적 또는 권리 정보적 목적을 위하여 검색하며, 검색 목적에 적합한 데이터베이스를 선택하여 검색어 또는 검색식, IPC(International Patent Classification)와 같은 특허분류를 입력하여 검색하게 된다.
그러나, 실제 검색 작업은 검색어 선정 상의 문제점 또는 검색식 입력 상의 문제점, 특허정보 자체의 특수성으로 인해 간단하게 이뤄지지는 않는다.
본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점들에 대하여 분석하고, 현재 운영 중인 특허정보 검색 사이트를 중심으로 검색 편의성 및 신뢰도 확보 방안에 대하여 연구하여, 다음과 같이 연구내용을 마무리하였다.
첫째, 명세서 용어 표현의 다양성에 대한 방안으로서, 사용자가 미처 생각하지 못한 유사어를 검색 사이트에서 참고적으로 제공하는 유사어 사전 기능을 제안하였다. 이를 위한 구체적인 방안으로서, 각 사용자가 입력하는 검색식의 누적 데이터를 활용하는 방안과 동의어 사전으로 저장된 데이터를 통합 활용하는 방안, 검색어와 특허분류를 동시에 활용하는 방안을 제안하였다.
둘째, 기타 개선 방안으로서, 외국어 번역 표현이나 외래어에 대한 유사어 추천 기능, 서지사항의 변경 정보 제공 기능, 검색어 입력 시의 철자 오류에 대한 안내 기능에 대하여 제안하였다.

Actual patent information search operations are not usually carried out easily because of their special property of the patent information themselves, and because of the problems arising from the selection of the search keywords or problems arising from the inputting of the search formulae.
In this treatise, reliabilities and conveniences in patent information search were studied by focusing on the search sites for the patent information under operations.
In order to achieve diversity in expressing terms used in the specification of a patent, this treatise has suggested dictionary function for similar keywords, in which similar keywords could be provided by the search site for reference, those keywords not being considered by the users. In this connection, as to concrete methods for achieving the objects, there have been suggested three ways that include making use of the cumulated data of the inputted search formulae by the users, and utilizing the stored data for the synonyms dictionary, and utilizing the search keyword and patent classification simultaneously.
There have been suggested such functions as to recommend synonyms about the translated expressions of foreign languages or borrowed words, to provide altered information about the bibliographical matters, and to guide spelling errors arising in inputting search keyword.
