이 연구는 남한의 학생들을 대상으로 북한 중학교 ‘지리’ 교과서의 기상학 분야 용어를 어느 정도 인지할 수 있겠는가를 조사하였다. 이 연구를 위해 남·북한 중등과학 교과서를 분석하고 기상학분야 용어를 발췌하여 남한의 고등학생과 대학생들에게 질문지를 통해 인지정도를 조사하였다.
연구결과에 의하면 설문에 응한 남한의 학생들 중 45% 이상이 과학 교육 분야에서 과학용어의 이질성이 가장 심각할 것이라고 생각한다고 응답하였고, 같은 의미를 갖는 남·북한 과학용어에 대하여 약 30%의 인식의 차이를 나타냈다. 또한 40개의 북한 용어 중 4개를 제외하고는 북한 용어를 인식하기 어려워하였으며, 그러한 용어들의 80.6%가 고유어가 포함된 용어였다. 이러한 결과는 북한은 과학 용어에 순수한 우리말인 고유어를 활용하고 있지만 남한의 경우는 대체적으로 한자어와 라틴유럽식 외래어가 많은 비중을 차지하고 있기 때문에 고유어가 오히려 한자어나 외래어보다 생소하게 느껴지기 때문인 것으로 보인다.

In this study, the meteorological scientific terms in the geography text books of North Korea which includes all of the meteorological educational contents in middle school level are compared with those in the earth science text books in South Korea to pick up 40 scientific terms, each composed of different words in South and North textbooks but with the same meaning and the correct score ratio for the South Korean high school and college students to perceive the meanings of these meteorological terms is investigated.
According to the study, more than 45% of the South Korean students are considering that the wide differences in using the scientific terms between the North and South Korean science educations exist. The South Korean students have about 30% more correct understandings on the terminology in South Korean textbooks than on those in North Korea and the higher rate of correct understanding on only 10.0%, 4 of 40 North Korean terms. 29(80.6%) terms of the 36 North Korean terminology which the South Korean students are difficult to perceive the correct meaning are those lately composed of Korean native words. These results show that most of the scientific terms in South Korean that are derived from the Chinese characters and imported foreign language terms is more easier to perceive than those of North Korean derived from only the native Korean language.
