본 연구는 동음이의어의 구별 문제를 '외국인을 위한 한국어 학습사전'의 측면에서 '길잡이말(Guide Words)'을 중심으로 다루었다. 이를 위해 길잡이말을 사용하여 편찬된 사전들을 중심으로 길잡이말의 유형 및 어휘를 분석하고 문제점과 수정 방안을 제시하고 더 나아가, 문화 어휘를 포함한 몇 가지 단어에 대해 외국인을 대상으로 낱말 연상(word association)실험을 실시하여 '외국인을 위한 한국어 학습사전'에서의 길잡이말의 사용 원칙을 제시하였다.
이를 위해 본고의 1장에서는 동형어 구별을 위한 길잡이말의 목적과 필요성을 밝히고, 그 연구 방법과 방향 및 연구 대상을 살펴보았다.
2장에서는 길잡이말과 동형어 구별에 관한 기존의 연구를 정리했다. 우선 도서 검색에서 동형어 구별을 위해 사용되는 한정어(qualifier)와 길잡이말을 비교했다. 또한 길잡이말에 실험적 근거를 제시하는 낱말의 연상 작용(word association)을 살펴보고 사전에서는 길잡이말을 어떻게 사용하고 있는지『Cambridge Learner's Dictionary』를 중심으로 알아보았다.
3장에서는『연세 초등 국어 사전』을 중심으로 길잡이말의 유형과 그에 쓰인 어휘를 분석하고 문제점을 지적했으며 이에 따른 수정 방안 또한 제시했다. 길잡이말의 유형은 크게 계열 관계, 통합 관계, 기능과 용례, 기타로 구분된다. 계열 관계는 다시 의미 관계, 연관 관계로 나뉘는데, 전자는 상·하위, 반의, 유의, 등위, 부분·전체 관계로 분류되고 후자는 형태, 어휘, 연상 관계로 분류된다. 통합 관계는 선택적 성분 실현 규칙에 따른 관계와 관용어 완성 규칙에 의한 관계로 나뉜다. 어휘 분석은 같은 길잡이말을 사용하고 있는 표제어들이 하나의 어휘망을 이루어 한국어 어휘 학습에 활용될 수 있고 길잡이말에 고빈도로 사용된 어휘는 교육용 기초어휘일 가능성이 높기 때문에 한국어 교재 편찬이나 학습교안에 반영될 수 있다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 크다. 길잡이말의 문제점으로 첫째, 길잡이말이 동형어를 이루는 표제어보다 어렵다는 점, 둘째, 길잡이말 자체가 동형어라는 점, 셋째, 표제어를 보고 길잡이말이 바로 연상되지 않는 점, 넷째, 동일한 유형의 어휘에 대해 길잡이말의 통일성이 부족하다는 점을 들 수 있다. 이러한 문제점은 보다 쉬운 어휘를 길잡이말로 선정하고, 동형어를 이루는 길잡이말을 피하며 연상 작용이 강한 어휘를 길잡이말로 삼고, 통일성 있는 길잡이말을 제시함으로써 해결될 수 있다.
4장에서는 본 논문의 최종 목적인 '외국인을 위한 한국어 학습사전'에서의 길잡이말에 관하여 논하였다. 외국인 학습자들은 모어 화자와 문화적이고 어휘적인 면에서 크게 차이가 난다. 그 차이를 한국어 학습사전의 길잡이말이 어떻게 반영할 수 있는지 낱말의 연상(word association) 실험을 통해 알아보았다. 한국어 고급 학습자를 대상으로 문화어 '가마, 간, 절, 점', 외래어 '코트', 다양한 품사로 동형어를 이루는 단어 '이', 용언 '쓰다'를 자극어로 제시하여 그 반응어를 분석하였다. 마지막으로『연세 초등 국어 사전』의 문제점과 외국인을 대상으로 한 낱말의 연상 실험을 바탕으로 '외국인을 위한 한국어 학습사전'에서의 동형어 구분을 위한 길잡이말 원칙을 제안했다.
5장 맺음말에서는 지금까지의 연구 결과를 요약하고 앞으로의 과제를 제시하였다. 또한 길잡이말이 앞으로 한국어 학습사전 이외에 어떻게 활용될 수 있는지와 동형어 교육에 관한 몇 가지 제언을 해 보았다.

The objective of this thesis is to present the principles for Guide Words in Korean Learner's Dictionary to help foreign learners to distinguish homonyms that have the same spellings but different meanings. In this study, the various types and vocabularies of Guide Words listed on dictionaries with Guide Words are analyzed. Here, problems are identified and modifications are proposed. In addition. "Word Association Test" that includes cultural words is applied in the questionnaire for Advanced Korean learners. With the results of the survey, the principles of Guide Words in Korean Learner's Dictionary for foreign learners are proposed.
Chapter one deals with the objective and imperatives of this thesis, and also the key methodologies that are used throughout the study and the concept of Guide Words is examined.
Chapter two takes an in-depth look at previous studies on Guide Words and the discernment of homonyms. First of all, the "qualifier" in book search is examined. Moreover, "Word Association" is studied and the Guide Words in ‘Cambridge Learner's Dictionary’ are described.
Chapter three looks at the various types and vocabularies of Guide Words in 'Yonsei Korean Elementary Dictionary' and analysis on the problems and possible solutions are proposed. The types of Guide Words are classified into four relations; paradigmatic relation, synthetic relation, examples and functions, and others. The analysis into vocabulary of Guide Words suggest that the network of words that share the same Guide Words can help to aid in learning the Korean language. Words that are frequently used as Guide Words can contribute to the compilation of Korean language education text.
Chapter four discusses the word association test-including cultural words-by conducting questionnaire survey to Advanced Korean learners. This section sets the principles of Guide Words in Korean Learner's Dictionary for foreign learners.
Foreign learners differ from Korean mother-tongue learners in culture and vocabulary. That's why cultural words and others are used in the word associations test. The culture words, 'ga-ma(가마), gan(간), jeol(절), jeom(점)', the borrowed word, 'koteu(코트)', the word having various parts of speech, 'yi(이)', and the verb and adjective 'sseu-da(쓰다)' were presented as stimulus words and various response words appeared. Based on the problems of 'Yonsei Korean Elementary Dictionary' and the word association test, the principles of Guide Words in Korean Learner's Dictionary for foreign learners are presented.
Chapter five offers the summary and limitation of this study and recommends further explorations into a variety of related areas such as thesaurus, wordnet etc. in the Korean language education.
