현재 유치원 영어교육은 객관적인 효과성이 검증되지 않은 채 시행되고 있어 유아 인지발달의 문제, 영어교육 방법의 문제, 유아 영어교사의 자질문제가 지속적으로 제기되고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 유아 영어교육에 대한 유치원 영어전담 교사의 인식을 교사 전공에 따라 분석하여 유아 영어교육의 현 실태와 개선 방안을 모색하고자 하였다.
본 연구의 대상은 유치원에서 근무하는 영어교사로 유아 관련 전공 교사 3인, 영어 관련 전공 교사 3인, 그리고 유아와 영어 관련 전공 교사 3인으로 하였다. 유아 영어교사를 대상으로 유아 영어교육에서의 유아 인지발달, 유아 영어 교수방법, 유아 영어교사 전문성에 대한 면담이 진행되었다. 면담한 내용은 전사하여 교사의 수업을 관찰한 내용과 함께 체계적으로 분석되었다. 분석한 내용은 근거이론에 의해 코딩과 교사 전공에 따라 내용을 범주화하였다. 이를 통해 연구문제에 따른 유치원 유아전담 교사가 인식하는 유아 영어교육의 현 실태와 개선방안의 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 유아 영어교사는 교사가 소속된 회사와 유치원에서 제공하는 교재가 유아 인지발달에 적합하지 않다고 인식하였다. 그러므로 유아 영어교육 자료를 보급하는 회사와 유치원에서는 유아 인지발달에 적합한 수업 교재와 수업자료 개발이 필요하다.
둘째, 유아 영어교사는 유치원 영어수업에서 교사의 영어 사용은 유아의 수업흥미도, 수업집중, 수업참여에 영향을 미친다고 인식하였다. 그러므로 교사는 유아가 이해할 수 있는 언어수준을 고려하여 영어와 한국어를 혼합하여 수업을 진행할 필요가 있다.
셋째, 유아 영어교사가 지녀야 할 자질로 유아 영어교사는 유아교사와 영어교사가 지녀야할 자질을 갖춰야 한다고 인식하였다. 하지만 교사 채용시 영어교사의 전문성을 중요하게 고려하므로 교사를 채용할 때 유아교사의 전문성에 대한 고려가 필요하다. 또한, 유아 영어교사는 객관적 기준이 없는 유아 영어교육 과정의 안정성 문제에 대해 지적하였다. 그러므로 교사 전문성 양성 프로그램을 개발하여 전문성을 지닌 유아 영어교사를 양성하고 유아 영어교육과 유아 교육과정의 통합이 필요하다고 인식하였다.

The purpose of this study was to explore the current conditions of early childhood English education and find the way to improve English education quality in kindergarten by analyzing the perspectives stated by kindergarten English teachers according to their majors.
The research questions of this study are:
1) What are the current conditions of early childhood English education related to children's cognitive development and how to improve them?
2) What are the current conditions of early childhood English education method and how to improve them?
3) What are the current qualifications of the kindergarten English teacher and how to improve them?
The data of this study were collected by interviewing English teachers working in kindergartens and observing their classes. The data were then analyzed based on Grounded Theory Approach by categorizing and comparing the data according to teachers' majors: childhood, English, and both childhood and English.
The results for this study are as follows. First, the teachers perceived the text books, which the companies and kindergartens offered, were not appropriate for children's cognitive development. Thus, the companies and kindergartens, which regulate materials for kindergarten English education, need to develop class materials considering children's cognitive development. Second, the teachers stated that the teacher's English speaking proficiency affects children's class interests, attention, and participation. This implies that the teacher needs to use Korean and English considering children's understanding level of language input. Third, the teachers perceived kindergarten English teachers should be qualified with an understanding of early childhood education and English education. However, companies and kindergartens regarded English professionalism as the important quality for kindergarten English teachers. In addition, the teachers expressed their concern of the unsystematic curriculum of kindergarten English education which lacks an objective educational criteria. This study implies that it is necessary to develop theory driven, systematic programs to train teachers of early childhood English Education and to integrate kindergarten English education into the curriculum of early childhood education, within the framework of Nu ri curriculum.
