본 연구에서는 한국어 교재의 시각 디자인을 기호학적 방법으로 연구하여 학습 내용을 효과적으로 전달하기 위한 시각 디자인 방안을 마련하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국어 교재의 시각 디자인 범주와 기준을 마련하고 이를 토대로 한국어 교재 4종의 시각 디자인을 분석하고 교사와 학습자를 대상으로 설문조사를 하였다.
본 연구에서는 교재의 시각 디자인을 논리적이고 객관적으로 평가하기 위해 기호학 이론을 바탕으로 퍼스의 삼원적 관계에 기초해 한국어 교재의 시각 디자인 분석 범주와 기준을 마련하였다. 분석 범주를 학습자 배경 영역, 시각 기호의 구성과 구조, 언어 텍스트와 시각 기호의 관계의 세 가지로 나누고 각각의 분석 범주에 따른 세부 기준을 제시하였다.
이에 근거하여 한국어 초급 교재 4종의 학습 내용을 전달하기 위해 사용한 시각 기호의 구성과 구조, 학습 내용을 효율적으로 전달하기 위한 언어 기호와 시각 기호의 관계를 분석하였다. 그러나 특정 학습자를 설정할 수 없다는 한계점으로 학습자의 연령, 언어 학습 단계, 문화적 배경 등 학습자 배경에 따른 시각 디자인 분석은 제외하였다.
다음으로 교재의 사용자인 한국어 교사와 학습자를 대상으로 교재의 시각 디자인에 대해 설문조사를 실시하였다. 학습자를 대상으로 한 설문지는 네 가지로 나누어 학습자의 배경 측면에서의 만족도, 교재의 시각 디자인 측면에서의 고려 요소, 학습 효과 측면에서의 만족도, 기타 요구 사항에 대해 조사하였다. 교사를 대상으로 한 설문지도 네 가지로 나누어 학습자의 배경 측면에서의 고려 요소, 교재의 시각 디자인 측면에서의 고려 요소, 학습 효과 측면에서의 고려 요소, 기타 요구 사항에 대해 조사하였다.
본 연구는 교재의 시각 디자인을 외형적 평가가 아닌 학습의 효과를 높이기 위한 도구로서, 그와 관련한 객관적인 분석 범주와 분석 기준을 마련했다는 점에 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 교재의 시각 디자인 분석 영역을 단원의 전체 구성이 아닌 문법과 말하기 영역으로 한정하여 단원 전체의 시각 디자인을 분석하는 데는 미흡하였다. 교재에서 단원의 영역은 어느 영역에 치우치지 않고 고르게 구성되어야 하므로 문화, 어휘, 쓰기, 발음 등 각 영역에 대한 분석을 통해 각각의 특성에 따른 효과적인 시각 디자인 방안을 개발해야 할 것이다.
대부분의 한국어 교재가 범용적인 사용을 전제로 개발되고 있으나 교재 사용자가 점점 다양해지고 있음을 고려할 때 교재에 사용되는 시각 기호 또한 다양한 언어권의 학습자가 기호의 가치를 이해할 수 있게 하기 위해서는 향후 다양한 언어권의 학습자 요구를 조사하여 시각 디자인 개발에 반영해야 할 것이다.
교재는 중요한 학습 자료로서 교재의 시각 디자인은 학습 내용을 가장 효과적이고 효율적으로 표현할 수 있는 도구이다. 따라서 교재의 시각 디자인은 개인적인 선호나 장식적인 효과가 아닌 학습 효과를 향상시키기 위한 도구로서 그와 관련해 다각적인 노력을 해야 할 뿐만 아니라 시각 디자인과 학습의 효과를 검증하기 위한 지속적인 연구가 필요하다.

This study aims to look for visual design solution to effectively deliver learning contents by studying Korean language books in semiotic method. For this, visual design range and standard of Korean language book are formed and based on this, 4 kinds of visual design on Korean language are analyzed and survey targeted on teacher and learner is conducted.
In this study, to logically and objectively evaluate the visual design of textbook, visual design analysis range and standard are formed based on Peirce’s Tripartite relationship on semiotics theory. This study divides analysis range in three: learner background domain, composition and structure of visual sign, the relationship between language text and visual sign, and provides detailed standard according to each analysis range.
Based on this, this study analyzes the relationship between the composition and structure of visual sign to visually organize the learning contents of 4 kinds of Beginning Level Korean language books, and the language sign and visual sign to effectively deliver learning contents. However, from the limit that a certain learner cannot be set up, visual design analysis according to learner background such as the age, language learning level, cultural background of learner is excluded.
Next, a survey on visual design of textbooks is conducted with Korean teachers and learners. Questionnaire on learners are divided into four and investigated: satisfaction on learner background aspect, consideration on visual design aspect, satisfaction in learning effectiveness aspect and other demands. This study has its meaning on using visual design of textbook to enhance the effectiveness of learning not to evaluate external side and forming the range and standard of analysis based on it. However, this study has left much to be desired in analyzing visual design of the whole chapter as it sets limit of visual design analysis range in grammar and speaking domain. In a textbook, the domain of a chapter should be unbiased and equally formed so effective visual design plan according to each characteristic through analysis on each domain such as culture, vocabulary, writing, pronunciation should be developed.
Most of the Korean language books are developed on the assumption of universal use but considering the increasing variety of textbook users, the demand of various language group learner should later be investigated and reflected on the development of visual design in order for various language group learner to understand the value of sign.
The visual design of textbook which is an important learning material is the most effective tool to express learning content. Therefore, visual design of textbooks, the tool to enhance learning efficacy not for personal preference or decorative purpose, should put multilateral effort and a continuous study to verify the visual design and effectiveness of learning is required.
