어휘는 학습자의 의사소통 능력과 다른 언어 기능의 밑바탕이 되는 가장 기본적이고 필수적인 요소이다. 본 연구는 한국어 통합교재에서 새로운 어휘를 어떠한 방식으로 제시하는 것이 학습자에게 보다 용이하게 인식되고 효과적인 어휘 학습을 가능하게 하는지를 파악하고자 하였다.
이 연구에서는 첫째, 현재 가장 높은 빈도로 사용되고 있는 6종의 한국어 통합교재의 어휘 제시 방법을 분석하였다. 교재의 어휘 제시에 관한 큰 흐름을 파악하기 위하여 단원 전체의 어휘 제시 양상을 전반적으로 살펴보고 특히 읽기 텍스트와 관련한 어휘 제시 방법에 대하여 중점적으로 분석하였다.
둘째, 한국어 교재의 어휘 제시 방법에 대한 학습자 인식과 선호도를 파악하기 위해 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 앞서 분석한 통합교재의 여러 읽기 텍스트의 유형 중에서 어휘 제시 방법에 관한 몇 개의 대표적인 모형을 작성한 후, 설문 조사를 통해 이에 대한 학습자의 선호도를 파악하였다. 또한 설문지를 통하여 얻기 어려운 실제적이고 깊이 있는 자료를 수집하기 위하여 학습자를 대상으로 한 심층 면담 조사를 병행하였다.
셋째, 한국어 통합교재와 학습자 설문 및 심층 면담 조사 분석 내용을 토대로 하여 보다 효과적인 어휘 학습을 위한 한국어 교재의 어휘 제시 방법에 대하여 논의하고 시사점을 도출하였다.
이 연구의 결과를 요약하면, 학습자들은 읽기 텍스트에서의 어휘 목록이 읽기 텍스트와 같은 페이지에 제시되는 상태에 가장 긍정적인 반응을 보였다. 또한 학습자는 읽기 텍스트의 어휘 제시 방법으로서 단순 목록만 제시되는 유형보다는 읽기 텍스트와 함께 어휘 주석이 제시 되어 있는 유형을 선호하였다. 그 위치로는 어휘 주석이 읽기 텍스트의 측면 여백에 제시되어 있는 상태를 가장 선호하였다. 이러한 결과는 읽기 텍스트에 출현하는 새 어휘에 대하여 측면 여백에 간단하면서도 쉬운 어휘 주석을 제시하는 것이 학습자의 어휘 학습에 도움이 될 수 있음을 나타내준다. 아울러 학습자들은 어휘에 대한 설명으로 시각 자료가 제시되는 것에 대하여 매우 긍정적이었다. 또한 읽기 텍스트에 출현하는 어휘와 연관된 어휘 학습 활동이 제시되어 있는 상태를 선호하였다. 과도한 학습 부담이 되지 않는 범위 내에서 읽기 텍스트에 출현한 새 어휘에 대하여 예문이나 연습문제가 같이 제시되는 것이 어휘 학습에 매우 유용할 것이라는 의견을 보였다.
본 연구에서는 이와 같은 분석과 조사 결과를 토대로 하여 읽기 텍스트의 어휘 제시방안을 구성하였다. 이 구성안에서는 읽기 텍스트에 출현하는 새 어휘에 대하여 측면 여백에 어휘 주석을 제시하고, 읽기 텍스트의 다른 한쪽 지면에 출현 어휘에 대한 정보와 어휘 학습 활동을 제공하여 학습자의 어휘 학습을 돕고자 하였다. 이 연구는 앞으로 한국어 통합교재의 읽기 텍스트 내에서 새 어휘를 어떻게 제시하는 것이 효과적인가에 대한 다각도의 어휘 제시 방법을 연구하는 데에 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

Vocabulary is one of the most essential and fundamental elements for communication and language skills. The purpose of this study is to examine effective and easy ways to present new vocabularies in Korean integrated textbooks for Korean language learners.This study analyzed various methods of presenting new vocabularies in six Korean integrated textbooks. The research examined vocabulary presentation across all units to understand the current tendency of vocabulary presentation. In particular, the study focused on vocabulary presentation related to reading texts.To understand learners’ perception and preference of vocabulary presentation methods in Korean textbook, a brief survey was given to the learners. The survey included several examples of typical vocabulary presentation methods previously used in integrated textbooks, and captured the learner’s preference of the examples. The survey was followed by an in-depth interview with the learners to collect practical and detailed verbatim. Finally, this study discussed ways to effectively present vocabulary in Korean textbooks and drew conclusions based on the survey and interview analysis. To sum up, learners reacted positively to vocabulary lists provided on the same page of the corresponding text. Moreover, learners favored vocabulary glosses along with the reading text rather than a simple vocabulary list. Learners chose side margins as the most preferred location for vocabulary glosses, and bottom margins as second preferred location. It is clear that presenting vocabularies in side margins with simple and easy glosses could improve the vocabulary learning. In addition, learners were positive toward having visual materials to support the explanation of vocabularies. They also showed great satisfaction with textbooks that contain vocabulary learning exercises related to the vocabularies in the reading text. Learners commented that reasonable amount of sample sentences and practice problems would be very beneficial to learning vocabularies. This study, based on the analysis and survey results, provides solutions to vocabulary presentation methods in reading text. It attempts to provide vocabulary glosses in the side margins of reading texts, as well as vocabulary exercises and practice problems to assist the vocabulary learning. This research may be utilized as reference for future research on effective ways to present new vocabularies within Korean integrated textbooks.
