Vocabulary is one of the most essential and fundamental elements for communication and language skills. The purpose of this study is to examine effective and easy ways to present new vocabularies in Korean integrated textbooks for Korean language learners.This study analyzed various methods of presenting new vocabularies in six Korean integrated textbooks. The research examined vocabulary presentation across all units to understand the current tendency of vocabulary presentation. In particular, the study focused on vocabulary presentation related to reading texts.To understand learners’ perception and preference of vocabulary presentation methods in Korean textbook, a brief survey was given to the learners. The survey included several examples of typical vocabulary presentation methods previously used in integrated textbooks, and captured the learner’s preference of the examples. The survey was followed by an in-depth interview with the learners to collect practical and detailed verbatim. Finally, this study discussed ways to effectively present vocabulary in Korean textbooks and drew conclusions based on the survey and interview analysis. To sum up, learners reacted positively to vocabulary lists provided on the same page of the corresponding text. Moreover, learners favored vocabulary glosses along with the reading text rather than a simple vocabulary list. Learners chose side margins as the most preferred location for vocabulary glosses, and bottom margins as second preferred location. It is clear that presenting vocabularies in side margins with simple and easy glosses could improve the vocabulary learning. In addition, learners were positive toward having visual materials to support the explanation of vocabularies. They also showed great satisfaction with textbooks that contain vocabulary learning exercises related to the vocabularies in the reading text. Learners commented that reasonable amount of sample sentences and practice problems would be very beneficial to learning vocabularies. This study, based on the analysis and survey results, provides solutions to vocabulary presentation methods in reading text. It attempts to provide vocabulary glosses in the side margins of reading texts, as well as vocabulary exercises and practice problems to assist the vocabulary learning.
