This study aims to define what academic Korean language education means and to develop Academic Korean Education Program using SIOP(The sheltered instruction observation protocol) model for multicultural background students. It also suggests teaching ideas about how to design lesson plans of elementary school social studies to adjust the contents to the level of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
As Korea has been becoming a multicultural society, the educational needs for multicultural background students have increased and the researches about how to support these students in various ways are actively going on. The first step to help them adjust to school is to develop their language proficiency. Many students can reach a certain level to communicate with friends with no difficulty in every day life after a certain period of time. However, they still struggle to catch up with other students in the academic fields. Therefore, the educational efforts are needed to help them understand academic contents.
Many researchers have defined this cognitive and academic language proficiency as academic Korean, but they mixed the term of academic Korean with academic Korean proficiency or academic Korean education. In this research, academic Korean is defined as Korean language which multicultural background students can understand the academic contents and communicate with others applying their background to new knowledge and culture. Academic Korean proficiency is Korean language proficiency that multicultural background students acquire to understand the academic contents and communicate with others applying their background to new knowledge and culture. Academic Korean education is defined as all the educational plans and practices that help multicultural background students improve their language proficiency, academic comprehension, social adaptation and cultural acceptance.
As an effective academic Korean education method, the SIOP model is introduced, which is one of the content-based learning methods. The SIOP model has 30 features that apply to design teaching instructions for multicultural background students from preparation, lesson delivery, to assessment. It contains to set the content and language objectives, help students build their background, adapt the contents to the students’ level, provide frequent opportunities for interaction, and give regular feedbacks through the lesson.
In this research, academic Korean education programs of elementary social studies were designed using the SIOP model for multicultural background students. 9 multicultural background students who are in the 5th and the 6th grade participated in the 16 period classes for 8 weeks. Based on 30 features of the SIOP model, the simplified 5-step instructional model was designed as follows: building backgrounds, content and language objectives, comprehensive input, practice & application, review & assessment.
To prove the effectiveness of this program, the students were tested with TOPIK(Test of Proficiency of Korean) before and after the research. There was a meaningful improvement in their Korean Proficiency such as grammar and vocabulary, writing, listening and reading.
However, the number of the participants was small and to make up for the limitations of quantitative research, students’ surveys, class reviews and interviews were carried out to find out how academic, cognitive, social․cultural factors influenced their academic Korean language proficiency. The participants answered that learning both content and language simultaneously was helpful to understand academic subjects. Self-directed study, in other words, learner autonomy such as vocabulary research, the use of flash cards, organizing notebooks, having enough time to study was helpful to catch up the lesson in the class. When they linked new learning to past learning, it was more effective to study. The students who accepted new culture positively tended to accommodate themselves to school environment better than the students who did not like to learn new cultural things much. Also, confidence was the important factor of active learning.
This research is meaningful since it shows the specific examples of academic Korean education program and presents the direction how academic Korean education program should be developed in the future. This program also can help multicultural background students succeed in grade level academic classes. For multicultural background students, it is expected that further educational efforts should be tried and more significant development should be discussed in academic Korean education.
