우리나라는 다문화 사회로써 이제는 다문화라는 단어도 어색하지 않을 정도로 다문화를 점점 받아들이고 있다. 특히 우리나라는 1990년 이후 다문화가정이 폭발적으로 늘고 있으며, 이들의 자녀들이 2006년 이후 6년 만에 5배가 증가해 현재는 약 5만명에 달하고 있고, 앞으로 더욱 더 증가할 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 다문화가정에서 발생한 문제를 해결하고자 하는 노력이 필요하다.
아이들은 앞으로 우리나라를 이끌어나갈 인재이기 때문에 이들이 바르고 건강한 성인이 될 수 있도록 국가·사회·가정은 노력을 해야 한다. 하지만 다문화가정 아이들은 한국어 이해 부족으로 수업의 어려움을 겪는 경우도 있고, 다문화가정 자녀라는 이유만으로 놀림이나 차별을 경험하고 있는 실정이다. 그렇기 때문에 앞에서 언급한 문제점을 해결하고자 하는 노력이 필요하다. 하지만 현재 우리나라는 다문화라는 큰 틀에만 집중이 되어 있고 정작 필요한 다문화가정 자녀를 위한 사업이 부족한 실정이다. 물론 다문화가정 자녀 역시 다문화 큰 틀 속에 한 부분이긴 하지만 이들 자체의 문제점을 해결하는 것이 앞으로 다문화로 인해 발생하는 문제를 해결하는 디딤돌이 될 수 있기 때문에 다른 부분보다는 다문화가정 자녀를 위한 지원이 필요하다.
먼저 다문화가정 청소년을 대상으로 한국어와 한국문화를 익힐 수 있는 기회를 많이 제공해야 한다. 둘째는 다문화가정 청소년이 한국사회의 일원으로 자아정체감을 확립할 수 있도록 국가가 나서서 노력을 해야 한다. 셋째는 다문화가정 청소년들이 학교에 다닐 수 있도록 현재 문제가 되는 부분을 법적·정책적으로 해결해야 한다. 넷째는 다문화가정 청소년이 다양한 욕구를 충족시킬 수 있도록 교육·문화·복지 등에 적극적으로 지원할 수 있는 방안을 모색해야 한다. 마지막으로 다문화가정 청소년들이 적응해나갈 수 있도록 필요한 프로그램 개발에 힘써야 한다.
다문화와 관련해 우리사회는 많은 정책을 개발하고 있으며, 이미 시행하고 있다. 하지만 중복되는 정책도 있고, 반대로 필요한 부분이지만 시행할 프로그램이 없는 경우도 있다. 또한 현재 우리나라는 결혼이민자에 대해 포커스가 맞춰진 경향이 있다. 물론 결혼이민자에 대한 정책도 중요하지만 이들의 자녀에 대한 정책도 꼭 필요하다. 그렇기 때문에 다문화를 각각 따로 따로 구분하여 정책을 시행할 것이 아니라 미래를 내다보는 정책이 필요하다.

South Korea meets new era of multiculturalism. People are embracing this social phenomenon naturally. Surprisingly, the number of multicultural family in South Korea keeps increasing sharply since 1990, and the number of Korean children of mixed race had grown by five times in six years time since 2006, which counts about 50,000 at present. The number is expected to rise continuously. Hence, there is a need for proper measures to solve social issues arose by the multiculturalism in South Korea.
It is our responsibility to protect children of mixed race because they are also our precious assets of the nation. As the matter of the fact, they often meet language difficulty in understanding former Korean education and often experience harassment and discrimination at school. Therefore, some efforts must be applied to resolve this social problem. In fact, the government has been reviewing polices for the multicultural families but yet it does satisfy actual needs.
Many people see mixed race children problem as a part of multiculturalism but they should be aware of that dealing with it primarily can be the key to mend the whole problems. First of all, Korean language and Korean culture teaching programs should be provided for mixed-race children. And the government should support the children in finding their ethnic identities. Third, some rigid laws and policies should be enacted for mixed-race children, who wish to receive former Korean education. Forth, the government should seek great measures for the mixed teenagers to meet various needs such as education, culture and welfare. Finally, appropriate programs should be produced to support the children to adapt to the environment just like pure Korean children.
The government has already exhibited enormous policies in regards to multiculturalism and they are in the process of being implemented. However, some are duplicated and some are rather unpractical. Many of them are targeted married immigrants, but it is necessary to have effective policies for Korean children of mixed race. Hence, the government should provide some practical policies that can anticipate the future of a multiethnic and multicultural society.
