본 논문의 목적은 한국 설화를 통해 외국인 한국어 초급학습자에게 한국 문화를 효과적으로 교육할 수 있는 방안을 마련하는 데에 있다. 오랜 시간 민중에 의해 전해 내려 온 설화는 초급학습자에게 한국 문화를 교육하는 데 효과적인 자료로 활용될 수 있다. 한국의 고유성을 담고 있는 설화 작품은 한국 문화 교육에 유용하다. 본 연구에서는 외국인 학습자가 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 설화를 선택하여 문화 교육을 진행하였다.
설화가 한국어 수업 교실에 유용하게 활용될 수 있는 이유는 첫째, 설화의 내용이 학습자의 흥미를 유발할 수 있고 상상력을 키우는 데도 도움을 주며, 둘째, 설화는 오랜 옛날부터 구연을 통해 전파되었기 때문에 구어 의사소통 능력을 향상시킬 수 있기 때문이다. 그리고 셋째, 설화 속에는 한국 사람들이 겪어 온 삶의 다양한 체험, 사상, 감정, 지혜, 용기, 가치관 등이 용해되어 있으며, 넷째, 설화 속에는 한국인들의 풍속·습관·생활·사상·신앙 등이 녹아 있고, 한국 사람들의 꿋꿋한 힘과 슬기·빛나는 지혜·소박한 꿈 등이 용해되어 있어, 학습자가 이를 통하여 한국 문화를 더 잘 이해할 수 있기 때문이다.
본 연구의 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
1장에서는 설화를 통한 문화 교육의 목적과 필요성을 살펴보고, 한국어 교육에서 설화를 활용한 문화 교육의 선행 연구를 검토하여 보았다. 선행 연구의 성과를 긍정적으로 수용하되 본 연구에 맞게 초급학습자를 대상으로 설화를 활용한 문화 교육을 진행하고자 하였다.
2장에서는 설화를 활용한 한국 문화 교육에 대해 고찰하였다. 설화의 개념과 성격을 바탕으로 설화의 교육적 의의와 설화를 활용한 문화 교육의 필요성을 제시하였다.
3장에서는 설화를 통한 한국 문화 교수-학습 방안을 제안하였다. 한국 문화 교육을 위해 어떤 설화를 선정해야 하는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 먼저 한국어 교재에 포함된 설화 목록을 제시한 후 기존의 설화 선정 기준에 관한 기존의 연구를 살펴보았다. 다음에는 초급학습자를 위한 설화 선정 기준을 제안하였으며 선정 기준을 바탕으로 한국어 초급학습자에게 적합한 설화 목록을 제시하였다. 그리고 선정된 설화 중 <호랑이와 곶감>을 대상으로 작품의 내용 및 문화 요소를 분석하여 실제 수업 방안을 제시하였다.
설화 <호랑이와 곶감>에서 ‘곶감’, ‘황소’, ‘호랑이’등 설화에 등장하는 상징물들을 통해 한국의 문화적 특징을 살펴본 후, 학습 목표 및 수업 방법을 제안하였다. 수업은 ‘도입’, ‘이해 및 감상’, ‘비평 및 적용’, ‘정리’의 네 단계로 구분하여 설계하였다.
4장에서는 이제까지의 연구를 정리하였다.
설화는 문자가 생겨나기 이전부터 한국 사람의 일상을 이야기하는 생활의 문학으로 한국의 전통문화가 풍부하게 녹아있어 한국어 교육에서 효과적으로 활용될 수 있다. 한국어 교육에서 설화가 문화 교육으로 활용될 수 있도록 앞으로 다양하고 적극적인 연구가 활발하게 이루어져야 할 것이다.

This study aimed at preparing the education scheme for those foreigners who learn Korean though folk tales. The literature for Korean culture education should have the traditional stability and universality. Foreigners can learn about the spirits and thinking ways of Korean. Also, they can broaden with horizons by comparing their own cultures with those of Korean. To make foreigners understand Korean cultures easily, the topics familiar to them are chosen to teach them.
The thesis concludes a brief introduction and three chapters. Chapter one presents the aim and necessity of the study, the previous related study and methods. Chapter two focuses on folk tales and culture education. First, the aim and necessity of this research, previous research related to this topic and research methods were described. In other words, the concept and characteristics of folk tales are revealed through its definition, characteristics, classification and the contents. Then, to illustrate the necessity of Korean culture education, the significance of folk tales teaching and how to use folk tales flexibly are discussed. Chapter three shows some teaching plans. Firstly, the author reveals the standards of folk tales through the contents in Korean text books, the present standards and the chosen standards for beginners. Secondly, some learning methods are given to beginners, including the reasons for choosing "tiger and dried persimmon" and the analysis of its culture factors. And then teaching aims and methods are included. At last the suggests some teaching plans.
A brief summary was provided and some suggestions were offered to present the ways of further study.
