(The Secret History of the American Empire)
As a Korean, my translations between Korean and English have been highly dependent on my inborn language sense. So I have felt the urgent need to create my own translation theory, and to apply it. Therefore, this thesis is designed to help incoming graduate students have a better understanding of translation skills, leading them to produce accurate and natural translations. It also covers the guidelines developed by experts in translation for translating English into the Korean language.
There are not many books about translation theory and skills which have been written by Korean experts in the field. Therefore, this thesis presents a brief introduction to translation theory, and practical examples to illustrate translation skills. To that end, most of the examples consist of speeches, which are the key study materials used by Korean Graduate Schools of Interpretation and Translation. Material based on speeches may seem boring. In fact, however, a good speech has a high standard of writing, which can be used both to improve one’s own writing and speaking skills.

일반적으로 언어 감각에 의존한 번역이 많아 번역 이론 정립 및 적용 사례에 대한 필요성을 느끼게 되었다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 번역의 이론과 실제 적용사례를 통해 영어를 한국어로 번역할 때 주의해야 할 점과 번역 기법 적용에 대한 이해를 높여 최대한 자연스러운 번역이 이루어질 수 있도록 하는데 그 목적이 있다
번역 이론과 번역 기법에 대해 소개한 책의 종류는 많지 않을 뿐만 아니라 대부분은 실용적인 번역기법보다는 이해하기 쉽지 않은 책들이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 번역 이론에 대한 간략한 정리와 함께 번역 기법 적용 사례에 최대한 실용적인 예문을 사용하여 번역에 대한 이해를 높이고자 했다.
이를 위해서 통역번역대학원 수업에서 가장 많이 사용되는 연설문의 문장을 예문으로 구성하였다. 연설문 하면 딱딱한 느낌을 떠올릴 수도 있지만 실제로 연설문은 구어체 중심의 격조 있는 글이기 때문에 글쓰기나 말하기 실력 향상이라는 두 마리 토끼를 잡을 수 있는 최고의 자료다.
마지막으로, 아무리 잘 정립된 번역이론과 번역 기법을 사용한다 할지라도 수준 높은 번역은 많은 번역을 하는 과정에서 고민의 흔적이 묻어나올 때 탄생하는 것이다.
