본 논문은 영어권 학습자를 위한 한국어 속담 교육의 효율적인 방안을 마련하는 데 목적이 있다. 외국어를 학습하여 원활한 의사소통을 하기 위해서는 그 나라의 문화에 대한 이해가 반드시 필요하고, 따라서 효과적인 의사 전달 방법이면서 문화적 특징이 담겨있는 속담을 교육 대상의 자료로 선택 하였다.
속담은 그 민족의 문화적 특징이 간단하게 압축되어 있는 언어적, 문화적 산물로 그 사회에 속한 사람들이 공감하고 인정하는 특수한 문화적 배경을 갖는다. 따라서 한국어 교육에서 속담 교육은 기본적으로 한국어 학습자의 한국 문화와 한국인의 생활방식, 사고방식 등을 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 또한 속담은 이해 어휘 차원뿐만 아니라 표현 어휘로서의 역할도 크다. 즉 한국어 학습자가 적절한 상황에서 적절한 속담을 구사하면 한국어 특유의 언어적 표현을 제대로 인식했다는 것을 의미하는데 속담의 각종 수사법 교육을 통하여 유용하고 다양한 언어 표현들을 익히게 되어 문화 교육의 면뿐만이 아니라 언어 교육의 면에서도 매우 중요하다.
본 연구에서는 특히 한국 문화와 매우 다른 양상을 보이는 영어 문화권 학습자들에게 반드시 속담 교육이 필요하다는 것을 인식하고, 풍자적 속담에 비해 난이도가 높지 않고 영어권 학습자가 이해하기 쉬우며 학습한 것을 실제로 사용하기 좋은 교훈적 속담을 대상으로 학습 목록과 교육 방안을 마련하였다.
학습 목록의 마련을 위해서 먼저 대학 기관의 한국어 교재와 한국어 속담 교재를 분석하여 특징과 문제점을 지적하였다. 또한 교사와 학습자를 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시하여 한국어 속담 교육의 현황과 요구정도를 파악하고 속담 학습 목록과 단계별 선정의 필요성을 확실히 하였다.
그러한 필요성을 바탕으로 하여 본 연구에서 정한 범위에 따라 45개의 교훈적 속담 학습 목록을 기준에 맞게 선정하였다. 뿐만 아니라 한국어 교훈적 속담 학습 목록을 주제와 소재별로 나누어 한국인의 전통적인 사고방식과 생활양식에 따른 문화 어휘를 살펴보았다. 그리고 구성 어휘와 문법 난이도, 의미 투명도, 영어로의 직역 가능 여부 등에 따라 단계별로 속담을 구분하고, 효율적인 교육 방안을 각각 제시하였다.
마지막으로 구체적인 교육 방법을 제시하고 학습 단계별로 교훈적 속담 교육의 실제 모형과 응용 가능한 연습 문제 유형을 제시하였는데, 본 연구를 통하여 영어권 학습자들의 흥미를 유발하고 학습의 의욕을 증진시키며 한국어 교육과 한국 문화 능력을 향상시킬 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study was to come up with efficient plans of Korean proverb education for native English speakers. It's essential to understand a nation's culture in order to learn its language and communicate with its speakers with no difficulties. Thus the study chose proverbs, which make an effective communication means and reflect the cultural characteristics, as the educational materials.
Proverbs are the linguistic and cultural products in which a people's cultural characteristics are compressed and have unique cultural backgrounds agreed and recognized by the members of the society. That means proverb education can help the learners of Korean understand the Korean culture and the lifestyles and thinking of Korean people. In addition, proverbs play a significant role not only in the area of understanding vocabulary, but also in that of expressive vocabulary. That is, when a Korean learner uses a proverb proper for the given situation, he or she is considered to have a right understanding of the unique linguistic expressions of Korean. By learning all sorts of rhetoric in proverbs, he or she can learn about diverse, useful expressions. Thus proverb education is highly critical for language education as well as for culture education.
Recognizing that proverb education should be offered to native English speakers whose culture is widely different from the Korean culture, I created a study list and educational plan with didactic proverbs, which are not as difficult as satiric proverbs, thus easier for native English speakers to understand, and good for actual application.
In making up a study list, I analyzed the Korean textbooks and the materials about Korean proverbs used by universities and identified their characteristics and problems. I also took a survey among the instructors and students to figure out the current state of Korean proverb education and the demands for the education to confirm a need for a study plan of proverbs and gradual selection.
Based on the need, I selected 45 study plans of didactic proverbs within the research scope according to the criteria and categorized the study plans by the topics and materials to examine cultural vocabulary according to the traditional thinking methods and lifestyles of the Korean people. I classified the proverbs into stages according to the constituent words, difficulty of grammar, transparency of meaning, and possibility of being literally translated into English before suggesting efficient educational plans.
Finally, I provided specific educational methods and the actual models and applicable exercise problems of didactic proverbs education according to the study stages. The results of the study will hopefully stimulate the interest of native English speakers, increase their desire for learning, and improve their abilities regarding Korean education and Korean culture.
