본 연구의 목적은 교회에서 이루어지는 외국인근로자에 대한 문해교육 활동이 성인교육적으로 어떤 의의가 있는지 연구하는데 있으며 구체적 목적은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 현재 교회에서 외국인 근로자들을 대상으로 진행되고 있는 문해교육의 현황과 교육적 특징은 무엇인지 분석한다.
둘째, 교회의 교육에 참여하고 있는 교사들은 학습자를 성인학습자로 인식하고 있는지, Knowles의 안드라고지의 입장에서 바라본 교회의 한국어 교육을 분석한다.
셋째, 학습자는 스스로를 그리고 교사를 어떻게 인식하는지 분석한다.
넷째, A, B 교회의 한국어 교육이 성인기초교육으로서 가지는 의의를 찾아보고, 이 교육이 과연 외국인 근로자들을 한국사회의 구성원으로 살아갈 수 있도록 하는지 살펴보았다.
이를 위해 인천과 시화의 두 선교회에 대한 사례연구를 실시하였다. 자료 수집은 주로 면담, 참여관찰, 그리고 문서를 통해 이루어졌다.
본 연구를 통해 나타난 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 두교회에서 이루어지고 있는 문해교육은 한국어를 읽고 쓰고 말할 수 있는 것에서 그치는 것이 아니라 삶의 기초 지식을 제공하고, 사회에서 적응할 수 있도록 돕는 문해교육으로서의 의의를 가진다.
둘째, 학습자는 ‘한국에서의 생존을 위해 교육에 참가’를 뛰어넘는 다양한 학습동기를 가진다.
셋째, 두 선교회의 문해 교육은 페다고지에서 안드라고지로 점진하는 중이다. 안드라고지 1단계의 교회의 문해교육이 안드라고지 7단계로 성장하기 위해서는 교사 중심으로 이루어지고 있는 교수계획, 요구진단, 학습목표의 구성, 계획 설계, 활동, 평가과정이 학습자 중심으로 바뀌어야 한다.
두 교회의 문해교육은 그들에게 한국땅에서 살아갈 수 있는 빛을 마련해 주는 발판이다. 이러한 문해교육이 더욱 더 효과적으로 이루어질 수 있도록 노력해야 할 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to explore the significance of adult basic education in churches' literacy education programs for foreign workers. The specific purposes include 1)to examine the status and characteristics of church adult basic education programs; 2)to see if teachers perceive students as adult learners; 3)to discuss how students perceive teachers and themselves; 4)to identify the meaning of adult basic education in church.
The research adopted a case study methodology. Two churches in Incheon and Sihwa were selected as objects. Interviews, participants observation, and related documents have been used for data collection .
Based on the study, the conclusion is as follows.
First, two churches are carried adult basic education as a way of sharing the gospel, however the provider of the program already recognized the importance of adult basic education to embrace foreign workers as members of this society. the programs in two churches are significant from the aspect of adult basic education. They focus not only on teaching how to read and write Korean but also on providing basic knowledge to help their adjustment in Korea.
Second, foreign workers who participate in the program have multiple goals. They want to learn Korean, make friends in church, and try to escape from their current situations through attending church.
Third, the programs in two churches are moving gradually from Pedagogy to Andragogy. It requires much time and effort to reach Andragogy. All the procedures including needs analysis, program design, development, and evaluation need to be performed from a learner-centered perspective.
Finally, adult basic education programs in two churches serve as stepping stones of living as a member of the community. Therefore, the important role of adult basic education for foreign workers in churches deserves more attention.
