In the early days of the acceptance of Roman catholic, the church encountered Confucianism which was the ruling principle in the Joseon dynasty. The Roman catholic church suffers the strong persecution from the Joseon dynasty. At this time, Joseon Dynasty put books in the field of roman catholic church on the index. As a results, catholic books were restricted in distribution.
Then on the occasion, Joseon Dynasty to open her ports to trade, the forceful suppression of roman catholic church has been weakened and roman catholic church could publish catholic books freely at last in Joseon Dynasty. Furthermore, Roman catholic church was in publishing activities upon this opportunity in France-Korea treaty of 1886 and Joseon diocese printing house move to Seoul.
But the modern catholic books published by Joseon diocese printing house after France-Korean treaty from 1877 to 1920 have several transitional characteristics in terms of bookbinding, the printing method, .
However, since the 18th century books made by the modern making method are no longer suitable to preserve because these s were weak in quality.
Several research institute or Museum hall related with roman catholic church have managed modern catholic books without proper conservation treatment. Also, research on catholic books are usually treated in terms of catholic church history, and studies in other areas are not exhaustive. Especially, there are very few studies on preserved condition of modern catholic books, conservation environment, condition and analysis of
Therefore, three perspectives focused in this were as follows:
First, I analyzed environmental condition such as temperature and relative humidity on illumination managed by 'The Seosomun Martyr's Shrine Museum hall' and determined the status' management of modern catholic books published by Joseon diocese printing house.
Second, I examined bibliographical matters, bookbinding, printing method and physical status of modern catholic books. Also measurement absolute age, analysis of fiber, image analysis for investigate of modern catholic books' quality .
Third, I tested the accelerated aging of modern catholic books for examining the behavior of aging. And also the measurement whiteness index, pH, and viscosity of samples before and after the conduction. Eventually, I proposed the appropriate conservation environments and method which are needed on modern catholic books, important materials in terms of the roman catholic church history, the bibliography, history of publishing culture.

천주교는 수용 초기 조선 사회의 지배 이념인 유교적 지배질서와 맞닥뜨리며 갈등을 겪었고, 네 차례의 거센 탄압을 받게 된다. 이때 천주교 관련 서적에 대한 금서 조치가 내려지고 유통에도 많은 제약이 따랐다. 그러다가 개항을 즈음하여 천주교에 대한 금압이 풀리면서 서적 간행이 자유롭게 되었다. 게다가 1886년 한불수호통상조약의 체결과 조선으로 성서 활판소를 이전한 것을 계기로 교회의 출판 활동은 더욱 활성화 되었다.
특히 한불수호통상조약 이후인 1877년부터 1920년대까지 성서활판소에서 발행한 근대 천주교 서적은 조선시대 전통양식에서 서구의 영향을 받은 근대 양식으로 넘어가는 과도기적 형태를 보이는데, 서적의 제본방식, 인쇄방식 및 책에 사용된 종이(冊紙) 등에서 뚜렷한 특징을 보인다. 그러나 근대 종이제작기법으로 만들어진 18세기 이후 간행 서적들은 재질이 보존에 적합하지 않아 그대로 방치될 경우 사용이 불가능하게 될 위기에 처해 있다.
그럼에도 이 시기 간행된 천주교 서적들은 현재 관련 연구소나 전시관 등에서 주로 소장․관리하고 있다. 또한 서적에 대한 연구도 대개 한국 천주교회사적 측면에서 다루어지며, 다른 분야에서의 연구는 미진한 실정이다. 특히 이때 간행된 서적들의 보존상태를 중심으로 소장·전시되고 있는 환경이나 서적에 사용된 종이의 상태 조사 및 지질 분석에 대한 연구는 거의 전무하다고 할 수 있다.
이에 본 연구에서는 첫째, 성서활판소에서 간행한 천주교 서적들의 관리 현황을 살펴보기 위해 해당 시기 천주교 서적을 소장한 “서소문 순교성지 전시관”을 선정하여 조도, 온․습도 들을 중심으로 한 환경조사를 실시하였다.
둘째, 서적의 서지사항을 비롯해 장황과 인쇄방식 등을 살펴보고, 지질(紙質) 분석을 위해 물리적 상태 조사와 절대연대 측정 및 섬유분석과 이미지 분석을 실시하였다.
셋째, 천주교 서적들의 가속열화 실험 전후로 백색도와 pH 및 점도 측정을 통해 노화거동을 살펴봄으로써 궁극적으로는 천주교회사적 측면에서나 서지학 및 출판문화사적으로 큰 의의를 지닌 근대 천주교 서적들의 장기적인 보존 방안에 대해 환경적인 측면과 보존처리 방안 측면으로 나누어 제시하였다.
