This study analyses vocabularies in the society section of Korean and Japanese newss, collected five days per week for a total of 120 days from January to June 2012, and categorizes them according to parts of speech, word-formations, and word species. It identifies the linguistic characteristics of Korean and Japanese and focused on the understanding of sociocultural characteristics of their vocabularies, classified by semantic categories, according to word list by semantic principles (1964). Especially the society section is assessed as appropriate data to understand the sociocultural aspects between Korea and Japan, because it deals with the issues of the day.

In the first chapter, it describes the aim of this study, previous studies, and the research method. The Previous studies referred to an study on vocabularies in newss and an article dealing with vocabularies from a social perspective. In particular, Song(2003) referred to the methodology for the classification of vocabularies by semantic categories, and Lee(2011) adopted the methodology for the categorization of vocabularies according to parts of speech, word-formations, and word species to his research.
In the second chapter, the headlines of news articles between Korea and japanese, collected as the objects of this study, were categorized, and then the vocabularies for this study were extracted. The vocabularies were classified by semantic categories through word list by semantic principles. Specifically the vocabularies were classified into nominal, verb class, adjective-adverb-adnominal class, and conjunction-interjection class, and their semantic categories, have significant differences in each class, were used to identify the sociocultural characteristics of the vocabularies usage in Korean and Japanese newss.
In the third chapter, the extracted vocabularies were categorized by the number of total words and that of individual words, and then classified in to parts of speech, word-formations, and word species. The similarities and differences of parts of speech in Korean and Japanese newss, the word-formations and the abbreviated forms were examined. The combining forms of loanblends were also examined to investigate the usage of word species.

Therefore, the result that contrasted the vocabularies between daily newss in Korea and Japan shows that the nominal of the middle items in the sociocultural characteristics study frequently mentions the name related to an event in Korean daily newss through 1.20 ware・nare. In the items of 1.21 kajoku in Korean daily newss, the vocabularies related to family appear in various forms on articles. And the items of 1.22 aite・nakama is an example that shows that foreign tourists has increased recently due to the Korean Wave. The items of 1.58 seimei suggests that Korean daily newss reflect the phases of the time of Korea which the suicide rate of Korea is number one among Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) countries. In the items of 1.28 doumei・dantai, Japan has more articles associated with individual than group in comparison with Korea. The vocabularies associated with construction appear on Japanese daily newss in the items of 1.38 shigoto.
In verb class, Both Korea and Japan have so many overwhelmingly vocabularies associated with death than positive vocabularies in 2.58 nama・seiiku.
In adjective-adverb-adnominal class, Korean newss variously use adjective-adverb-adnominal class associated with time in the items of 3.16 jishi. And they also use they also use temporal adverbs that represent momentary processes more than Japanese newss.
In parts of speech, both Korea and Japan overwhelmingly use noun and verb. In word-formation, Japanese has more flexible ability of word-formations than Korean when it composes a compound word. And in word species, the use of words written in chinese character meaning comprises more than half proportion of the use of the word in both Korean and Japanese newss. And foreign words also show a similar aspect, but the rate of use of loanblends in Japanese news is approximately more two times higher than in Korean news.
Consequently, this study did not achieve a satisfactory result due to the short research period of the target newss. However, if we chronologically extracts vocabularies of articles in various fields, future study will be expected to be helpful to simultaneously identify the sociocultural tendencies of both Korean and Japanese and to investigate the linguistic characteristics.
