이 논문은 성스럽고 축복받은 미사전례를 위해 잘 준비된 성가대가 되기 위한 준비과정을 연구주제로 하고 있다. 특히 성가대는 몸이 악기인 만큼 평상시 철저한 연습이 이루어지지 않으면 오히려 전례를 훼손하고 신자들의 기도를 방해하는 심각한 부작용을 낳게 되는 만큼 발성, 발음, 호흡 등 노래 전반에 걸친 완벽한 준비가 필요하다.
제 1장에서는 전례 성가의 의미와 미사 중에서 성가 기능, 그리고 성가대의 임무를 통해 미사 안에서 성가와 성가대의 역할이 중점 연구대상이다.
제 2장에서는 전례에서 성가대가 제 역할을 수행할 수 있도록 하는 성당 내부의 공간 배치과 음향의 조건을 연구할 것이다.
제 3장에서는 실질적인 성가대 지도법인 발성, 호흡, 공명, 가사전달 방법과 이를 활용한 각 성부별 발성지도와 리허설 방법을 가톨릭 성가를 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다.
바티칸공의회 이후 미사전례에서 모든 신자가 성가를 함께 부르게 되면서 성가대의 역할은 더욱 커지고 있다. 공동체가 노래할 수 있도록 때로는 이끌고 노래를 주고받으면서 전례의식을 더욱 성대하고 성스럽게 만들어야 한다.
이 같은 성가대의 역할을 하기 위해서 성당의 음향에서부터 성가대구성, 성가대 개개인의 역량에 이르기 까지 철저한 준비가 이루어져야 한다. 대부분 성당이 성가대를 2층으로 분리하고 있지만 공동체 전체가 직접 성가를 부르는 능동적인 전례참여가 되기 위해서는 성가대를 제대 오른쪽이나 신자들과 함께 자리해 미사전례 전반에 걸쳐 신자들의 노래를 도울 수 있도록 배려해야 한다. 또 음향도 말씀과 노래가 함께 하는 성당의 특성을 감안해 잔향시간과 명료도를 함께 고려한 시설보완과 설계가 이루어져야 한다.
성가대 위치나 음향 등의 개선도 중요하지만 무엇보다도 성가대 전체가 아름다운 소리를 내기 위한 준비가 중요하다. 이를 위해 자세 호흡 공명 발성 가사전달에 이르는 전 과정에 걸친 연습과 숙달이 반복되어야 한다.
우선 발성에는 성대와 주변 근육 뿐 아니라 몸 안의 수많은 근육이 사용되는 만큼 발성연습을 통해 발성의 메카니즘과 정확한 근육사용을 익혀야 한다. 횡격막호흡과 늑골호흡을 정확히 해낼 수 있도록 평소에 긴장을 푸는 방법과 자연스러운 호흡 방법을 반복 연습해야 한다.
발성, 호흡에 이어 효과적인 공명법을 체득하고 공명강을 올바르게 사용할 수 있어야만 좋은 성가대원이 될 수 있고 전례에서 최상의 연주도 가능해진다.
특히 성가가 기도인 점을 감안하면 가사전달이 무엇보다 중요하고 이를 위해서는 명확한 짧은 자음발음과 성가대원의 통일된 모음발음이 선결과제이다. 가사 전달이 정확하면 신자들이 느끼는 감동도 배가된다.
그러나 호흡 발성 공명 가사전달은 노래를 부를 때 하나씩 분리할 수 없으며 이 모든 요소들이 적절히 조화를 이뤄야 좋은 노래가 된다. 소프라노 알토 테너 베이스 등 4개 파트로 이루어진 성가대는 멜로디를 담당하는 소프라노부터 서로 조화를 생각하면서 화음을 만들어가야 한다.
호흡 발성 공명 가사전달이 기본단계라면 성가대는 이를 최상의 상태로 유지할 수 있도록 다양한 상황에서 리허설하면서 반복해야 한다. 성가곡이 다양하고 음정 음역 빠르기 악상이 제각각인 만큼 사전에 다양한 변화에 맞는 리허설을 하면서 어떤 상황에서도 미사에서 최상의 연주가 되도록 준비해야 한다. 이 같은 숙련 과정을 통해 완성된 성가가 성가대의 성화를 극대화할 수 있다.

The thesis is on a research subject of preparation processes for a well-prepared choir for the sacred, blessed Catholic mass. In particular, since the choir itself is the musical instrument, if it lacks strict practices regularly, it may lead to severe side effects, such as ruining the Mass and confusing the believers’ prayers. Thus, it requires thorough singing preparation, including but not limited to vocalization, diction and breathing.
Chapter 1 is focused on the meaning of Catholic Mass, the functions of hymn during the mass and the roles of hymn and choir inside the mass based on the tasks of choir.
Chapter 2 is on the study of spatial arrangement and sound conditions inside the Catholic church, so that the choir can perform its roles during the Catholic mass.
Chapter 3 is centered on the methods of vocalization, breathing, resonance and delivering lyrics, which are the practical guidance for the choir, and the vocalization guidance for each voice part using such methods as well as the rehearsal method based on the Catholic choir.
Since the Concilii Vaticani 2 , all believers have been singing the sacred songs during the Mass, expanding the roles of choir. The choir should lead the hymn for the group to sing, making the ceremony more magnificent and holy.
For the roles of choir to be successfully realized, a thorough preparation from the Catholic church’s sound conditions to organization of the choir and capability of choir members should be fulfilled. Most Catholic churches separate the choir into two floors, but for the whole group to actively participate in the precedent, the choir should be placed on the right side of the altar or should be together with the believers to guide them through the singing. In addition, considering the characteristics of Catholic churches where sermons and singing blend with one another, the reverberation time and articulation of sound should be considered in supplementing and designing the facilities.
Although it is important to improve the hardware aspects including the location and sound conditions of the choir, the most significant thing is to prepare for beautiful singing of the choir. To do so, the overall process of posture, breathing, resonance, vocalization and delivering lyrics should be practiced and repeated for mastery.
Above all, for vocalization, not only the vocal cords and the peripheral muscles are used, but also a number of other muscles are involved. Thus, the mechanism of vocalization and use of the proper muscles should be learnt through vocal exercises. The methods to ease tension and for natural breathing should be repeatedly practiced so that diaphragmatic and costal breathing becomes accurate.
Following the vocalization and breathing, an effective resonance method should be learnt and resonance cavity should be properly used to be a good member of the choir, showing the best performance during the mass.
Taking into consideration of the fact that the hymn is a prayer, it is important to deliver the lyrics and to do so, it is a preliminary task for the choir members to uniformly pronounce the vowels and convey clear, short consonants. When the lyrics are clearly delivered, the believers will have doubled touching experiences.
However, each element of breathing, vocalization, resonance and delivery of lyrics cannot be separated during singing, and all of them should be harmonized for good singing. The choir composed of 4 parts, including soprano, alto, tenor and bass should create a chord, thinking of harmony, starting from the soprano that is in charge of melodies.
The basic step for the choir is the breathing, vocalization, resonance and delivery of lyrics, yet for it to maintain its best possible conditions, rehearsals under various circumstances should be repeated. There are various types of sacred songs and their musical intervals, range of notes, tempo and musical motif may vary, so rehearsals should be done under various conditions. This will lead to the best performances in any Mass. The hymn or sacred song completed with such a mastery process will maximize the baptism of fire of the choir.
