본 연구는 현재 한국어 교육용 의성·의태어의 문제점을 찾아내어 한국어 학습자를 위한 의성·의태어 교육의 개선 방향과 목록을 제시하는데 목적이 있다.
한국어는 의성·의태어가 매우 발달한 언어이다. 또한 의성·의태어는 한자어와 외래어의 침투로 붕괴되고 있는 고유어 영역을 지키고 있는 유일한 어휘부류라고 할 수 있다. 특히 의성·의태어는 모음과 자음의 교체로 인해 의미와 어감의 변화를 가져오는 어휘이다. 한국어의 의성·의태어는 사용 범위가 넓다. 문학 텍스트뿐만 아니라 영화, 대중가요, 드라마, 예능, 광고 자막, 동요, 소설 등 구어와 문어 텍스트에 다양하게 사용되고 있다. 그리고 의성·의태어는 조어력이 강한 어휘로서 접미사와 결합하여 많은 어휘들을 파생할 수 있고 문장에서 서술어, 관형어, 독립어 등 다양한 기능을 수행할 수 있다. 또한 화자의 감정을 생동감 있게 표현하고 효과적으로 전달할 수 있다. 따라서 한국어 학습자의 어휘와 표현 능력을 높이기 위해서는 의성·의태어에 대한 연구가 중요하다고 할 수 있다.
본 연구에서는 한국어 의성·의태어 연구의 현황을 밝히고 의성·의태어의 텍스트별 특징에 대해 분석하고 사용 빈도와 사용 범위에 대해 분석하였다. 그리고 한국어 교재와 학습용 어휘 목록에 선정된 의성·의태어에 대해서도 분석을 진행하여 교육용 의성·의태어의 문제점을 지적하고 개선 방안을 제시하였다. 또한 텍스트별 기초 자료인 신문 제목, 구어 말뭉치, 드라마 대본, 한국어 교재, 학습용 어휘 목록 및 TOPIK 출제 문항에 선정된 어휘에 대해 분석하여 학습 단계별 의성·의태어 목록을 선정하는 데에 근거로 삼았다.
따라서 앞 장의 연구 및 분석을 바탕으로 한국어 교육용 의성·의태어의 일곱 가지 문제점을 밝히고 개선 방안을 제시하였다. 또한 학습 단계별 의성·의태어 목록을 선정하기 위해 두 차례의 선정 과정을 거쳐 목록을 선출하고자 하였다. 1차 선정 과정에서는 우선, 조남호(2003), 김중섭(2011), TOPIK 출제 문항에 선출된 어휘들을 모두 추출하였다. 이 어휘들을 한국어 학습자를 위한 한국어 학습에 필요한 유의미한 어휘로 객관성을 갖추었다고 판단해 1차 선정에 모두 포함시켰다. 다음으로, 5종의 한국어 교재, 신문 제목, 구어 말뭉치, 드라마 대본에 출현한 의성·의태어를 1차적으로 총 빈도수가 2이상인 어휘들을 모두 추출하여 1차 선정 목록에 포함시켰다. 따라서 1차 선정 과정에서는 총 294개의 어휘를 추출하였다. 2차 선정 과정에서는 주요하게 1차 선정 목록에 선정된 어휘들에 대해 등급화를 진행하였다. 본 연구에서는 <부록 5>를 참고하여 총 빈도수를 1차적인 주요 기준으로 하되, 상황적인 맥락을 고려하여 텍스트별로 중복 출현한 횟수를 2차적 기준으로 하였다. 또한 개별적인 어휘에 대해서는 음운적 특징, 교수·학습의 용이성도 고려하여 등급에 맞게 조정하였다. 단계별로는 대략 1:2.5:4.5의 비율로 목록 등급화를 진행하여 초급에는 43개, 중급에는 102개, 고급에는 151개의 의성·의태어 목록을 만들었다.
본 연구에서 제시한 학습 단계별 의성·의태어 목록은 여러 가지 변수로 인해 절대적이라고 할 수는 없다. 또한 이 목록을 실제 한국어 교육 현장에 적용하여 그 실용성을 검증 받지 못한 것에 아쉬움이 남지만 한국어 학습자의 어휘 능력을 높이는 데에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to find problems of Korean onomatopoeic and mimetic words for education and suggest direction of improvement as well as a list of Korean onomatopoeic and mimetic words for Korean language learners.
Korean is a language which has highly developed onomatopoeic and mimetic words. Onomatopoeia and mimetic words are also the only lexical class keeping native language scope which is collapsing by the Sino-Korean words and loanwords. They have the trait of semantic and connotational change by the consonant and vowel gradation. On the one hand, Korean onomatopoeic and mimetic words can be widely used. They are used in spoken and written text such as films, popular songs, television dramas, variety shows, advertising subtitle songs and novels as well as literary text. And they can derive many vocabulary words in combination with postpositional particles and perform functions of predicate, adnominal phrase and such in a sentence, as they have the ability of strong word-formation. They can also make it possible to express the speaker's feeling animatedly and effectively. Therefore the studies on onomatopoeia and mimetic words are important to develop the vocabulary and expressive power of Korean language learners.
This study presented the present conditions of the studies on Korean onomatopoeic and mimetic words. Then it analyzed their characteristics according to the text, the frequency and range in use of those words. And it analyzed the onomatopoeic and mimetic words appeared in the Korean language textbooks and chosen as vocabularies for study, indicating problems they have and suggesting improvement plans. It also analyzed the vocabulary appeared in news headlines, a spoken corpus, drama script, Korean language textbooks, vocabulary for study and TOPIK questions which are the preliminary data of each text. The analysis result formed the basis for selecting the list of onomatopoeia and mimetic words according to the learning stages. The reason we examined Korean textbooks is that Korean language learners encounter them easily in studying Korean and they form basic data which have a strong influence on learning.
The list of onomatopoeia and mimetic words according to the learning stages suggested in this study is not the absolute one because of a variety of variables. There's also a sense of what might have been to this study, as we didn't have the chance to apply this list to the spot of education and verify its practicality. But hopefully it will be of a little help for enhancing Korean language learners' vocabulary ability.
