A contrastive study of some degree adverbs between Korean and Chinese

This aims to investigate the common features and differences between Korean degree adverbs, 'Aju, Maeu, and Mopsi' which are used very frequently, and Chinese degree adverbs, ‘很, 非常, and 十分‘, from a linguistic perspective. This is also focused on contributing to the improvement of accuracy of the use of Korean degree adverbs of Chinese Korean language learners by analyzing the use aspects of Korean and Chinese degree adverbs and the correspondence between them, and providing vocabulary learning data useful for learners.
This consists of total 6 chapters from the introduction to the conclusion.
In chapter 1, the research purpose, previous studies and research method were introduced, and in chapter 2, the concepts, lists and sub-classification of degree adverbs in the two countries were examined to compare Korean degree adverbs with Chinese degree adverbs. Though th classification standards and methods vary depending on the views of scholars in the two countries, there are no big differences in the concepts of degree adverbs.
In addition to this, many scholars classify Korean degree adverbs, 'Aju, Maeu, and Mopsi' and Chinese degree adverbs, '很, 非常, and 十分', based on the same standard and they exist as synonyms, as shown in the lists and classification standards of Korean and Chinese degree adverbs.
In chapter 3, the common features and differences among Korean degree adverbs, 'Aju, Maeu, and Mopsi' were considered through a syntactic and semantic analysis. The meanings of Korean degree adverbs, 'Aju, Maeu, and Mopsi' are overlapped in some respects, and there are differences, from a syntactic perspective. In general, degree adverbs are to restrict the categories of some semantic features, not the categories of modificands.
Also, the co-occurrence relations of Korean degree adverbs, 'Aju, Maeu, and Mopsi' with modificands were discussed by analyzing them, from a syntactic perspective, and their semantic features were analyzed, on the bass of dictionary definitions. In addition, the common features and differences among them were considered, from this syntactic and semantic perspective, and the types of sentences were analyzed.
In chapter 4, the use aspects of Chinese degree adverbs, '很(hěn)', '非常(fēi cháng)', and '十分(shí fēn)' which can correspond to Korean degree adverbs, 'Aju, Maeu, and Mopsi' were analyzed using the research method used in chapter 3. Based on the syntactic and semantic characteristics, the common features and differences among '很(hěn)', '非常(fēi cháng)', and '十分(shí fēn)' were presented. Moreover, the types of sentences of '很(hěn)', '非常(fēi cháng)', and '十分(shí fēn)' were analyzed, based on the common features and differences.
In chapter 5, the correspondence between Korean degree adverbs and Chinese degree adverbs, on the basis of the research findings in chapter 3 and 4. Here, Korean degree adverbs, 'Anu, Maeu, and Mopsi' were compared with Chinese degree adverbs, '很(hěn)', '非常(fēi cháng)', and '十分(shí fēn)', respectively.
Overall, Korean and Chinese degree adverbs showed a lot of similarities, from a linguistic viewpoint, but slight differences were observed, too. Therefore, learners need to pay attention these slight differences in Korean language learning. Although there are a lot of limitations in this study, it is anticipated that this study could make some contribution to the research to compare Korean language with Chinese language.
