본 연구는 재한 외국인 유학생의 언어능력과 지각된 차별감이 대학 생활 적응에 미치는 영향을 확인하고, 또한 언어능력과 지각된 차별감이 대학 생활 적응에 미치는 영향에 문화적응 스트레스가 매개 역할을 하는지 알아보기 위하여 수행되었다.
본 연구 문제는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 재한 외국인 유학생 언어능력이 대학 생활 적응에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가, 둘째, 재한 외국인 유학생 지각된 차별감이 대학 생활 적응에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가, 셋째, 문화적응 스트레스는 재한 외국인 유학생 언어능력과 지각된 차별감이 대학 생활 적응에 미치는 영향에 매개역할을 하는가이다.
이를 위해 한국에서 재학 중이며, 국적과 상관없이 한국어능력시험과 토익영어시험에 응시했던 외국인 유학생 200명을 대상으로 설문조사를 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 그중 연구대상에 해당되지 않는 자료를 제외한 136부의 자료가 결과 분석에 사용되었으며, 구조방정식 모형을 적용하여 분석하였다. 연구 문제의 분석하기 위해 각 척도의 요인 구조의 확인을 위하여 확정적 요인분석을 실시하였고, 영향력 및 매개 효과의 검증을 위하여 경로 분석을 사용하였다. 마지막으로 매개 효과의 유의성 검증을 위하여 부트스트래핑 방식을 이용하였다. 이상의 통계 분석을 위하여 SPSS 18.0과 AMOS 18.0을 사용하였다.
연구의 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 측정 모형의 검증을 통하여 모든 측정변수들이 잠재변수에 통계적으로 유의하게 적재된 것을 확인하였으며, 이 연구의 연구모형이 자료에 적합하다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 경로 분석(path analysis) 결과, 외국인 유학생 언어능력과 지각된 차별감이 대학 생활 적응에 유의미한 영향력을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 문화적응 스트레스는 재한 외국인 유학생 언어능력과 지각된 차별감이 대학 생활 적응에 미치는 영향에 간접 효과를 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

This study was conducted to find the effect of linguistic competency and perceived discrimination of international students in Korea on their adjustment of university life and also to determine whether acculturation stress works as mediating effects.
The questions that this research study has are as follow. First, does linguistic competency of international students in Korea affect their adjustment to university life? Second, does their perceived discrimination affect their adjustment to their school? Third, does acculturation stress have a mediating role on the effect of linguistic competency and perceived discrimination of international students in Korea on their adjustment to university life?
For the research, this study collected questionnaires from 200 foreign international students, regardless of their nationalities, who participated in TOPIK and TOEIC. Not including the ones that are irrelevant to this research, 136 survey results were used and analyzed by the method of structure equation modeling. To analyze the results, analysis on primary factor was implemented to find out the factor structure of each measure, and path analysis was conducted to verify the influence of mediating effects. Lastly, bootstrapping method was used for the significance verification of mediating effects. For the data analyses above, this study used SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0.
The major results of this study are as follow. First, through verification of measuring model, it was found that all the measuring variables were included in latent variables with statistical significance and that the research model of the study is suitable for the data. Second, as the path analysis result, it was shown that linguistic competency and perceived discrimination of international students have significant effects on their adjustment to university life. Third, it was found that acculturation stress has indirect effects on the influence of linguistic competency and perceived discrimination on international students’ adjustment to university life.
