Korean language education institutes in Korea have developed a variety of Korean language programs which are fit for learners' characteristics. In addition, they run Korean helper programs designed to help foreign students in learning Korean language and culture, as well as in adapting to living in Korea. The programs receives positive responses because they give Korean helper students chances to make friends and cultural exchanges with foreign students. Although the need and importance of such programs have been recognized, however, it is difficult to find any Korean helper program that operate effectively and substantially.
The purpose of this study is to provide methods for the effective operation of a Korean helper program by exploring demands and views from Korean language learners, Korean helper students, and Korean teachers about the program. The surveyed objects are limited to Korean language learners at the beginning level and their Korean helpers.
In its first chapter, this study presents its purpose, need, and direction after review previous researches about the Korean helper programs. Its second chapter examines the current state of the programs run by Korean language education centers at Korean universities, with a focus on the program offered by the Institute of International Education at Kyung Hee University. The third and fourth chapters analyze demands and views from Korean language learners, Korean helper students, and Korean teachers about the helper programs. The Korean language learners surveyed tend to view Korean helpers as kind, helpful, and good to assist them in learning Korean language and experiencing Korean culture. The Korean helpers surveyed tend to consider the program as giving good chances to make friends with foreign students and understand their cultures. The Korean teachers tend to want learners to practice conversations intensively with Korean helpers.
The fifth chapter of the study presents methods for improving the Korean helper program on the basis of its findings. One of them is that education about helper activities needs to be strengthened for learners and helpers. Another is that the details of helping activities are provided for helpers. In particular, the effectiveness of the helping activities will be enhanced if they are given as tasks in accordance with levels of learning Korean.

한국어와 한국 문화에 대한 관심이 높아지면서, 국내에 들어오는 유학생의 수가 크게 증가하였다. 이에 따라 국내의 한국어 교육 기관은 학습자의 특성에 맞는 다양한 한국어 프로그램을 개발하고 있다. 그와 더불어 한국어 학습자들의 한국어 학습을 돕고 한국에서의 생활 적응 및 한국 문화 이해를 돕기 위해 한국어 도우미 프로그램을 운영하고 있다.
한국어 도우미 프로그램은 외국인 학습자의 입장에서는 한국 대학생이 한국어 학습과 한국 문화의 이해를 돕는다는 점에서 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다. 그리고 한국 대학생의 입장에서는 외국인 학습자와의 교류를 통해 다양한 외국 문화를 접할 수 있는 기회가 된다는 점에서 호응이 높다.
그러나 한국어 도우미의 필요성 및 중요성을 인식함에도 불구하고 실제 한국어 교육 현장에서 한국어 도우미 프로그램을 체계적으로 내실 있게 운영하는 모습을 보기는 힘들다.
따라서 본 논문은 현재 각 대학 한국어 교육 기관에서 운영하고 있는 한국어 도우미 프로그램의 현황을 개괄해 보고, 한국어 학습자 및 한국어 도우미, 한국어 교사의 도우미 프로그램에 대한 요구와 활동 평가에 대한 의견을 조사하여 보다 효율적인 한국어 도우미 프로그램 운영 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 연구의 효율을 높이기 위해 조사 대상은 초급 단계의 한국어 학습자 및 한국어 도우미로 한정하였다.
1장에서는 한국어 도우미 프로그램과 관련된 연구 성과를 살펴봄으로써 그간의 성과와 한계를 짚어보고 본 연구의 목적 및 필요성, 방향을 제시하였다.
2장에서는 국내 각 대학 한국어 교육 기관의 한국어 도우미 프로그램의 현황을 살펴보았다. 그중 경희대학교 국제교육원의 도우미 프로그램을 집중적으로 살펴봄으로써 한국어 도우미 프로그램의 운영 상황을 파악하였다.
3장에서는 한국어 도우미 프로그램에 대한 한국어 학습자와 한국어 도우미, 한국어 교사의 요구를 조사, 분석하였다. 한국어 학습자는 도우미가 한국어 공부를 도와주기를 바라고 있다. 한국어 도우미들은 외국인 학생들의 한국 생활 적응을 돕는 사람이라고 생각하고 있다. 한국어 교사들은 한국어 학습자들이 원어민 화자인 도우미와 많은 대화를 나누면서 말하기 연습을 중점적으로 하기를 바라고 있다.
4장에서는 한국어 학습자와 한국어 도우미의 도우미 활동에 대한 평가를 분석하였다. 한국어 학습자는 친절한 도우미, 한국어 공부를 많이 도와준 도우미, 다양한 한국 문화를 체험할 수 있게 도와준 도우미를 좋은 도우미라고 했다. 그에 비해 도우미가 바빠서 제대로 만나지 못했다고 하는 불만도 제기하였다. 한국어 도우미는 외국인 친구를 사귈 수 있어서 좋았고, 외국 문화를 이해할 수 있어서 의미 있는 기회였다고 평가했다. 다만, 외국인 학생과 시간 맞추기가 어려웠다는 점과 의사소통의 어려움 등을 힘들었던 점으로 들었다.
5장에서는 연구 결과를 바탕으로 한국어 도우미 프로그램 개선 방안을 제시하였다. 한국어 학습자와 한국어 도우미에 대한 도우미 활동에 대한 교육을 강화할 필요가 있다. 그리고 한국어 도우미가 활동할 내용을 구체적으로 제시할 필요가 있다. 특히 활동할 내용을 한국어 학습 단계에 맞춰 과제 형태로 제시하면 도우미 활동의 효율성을 높을 수 있을 것이다.
본 연구는 한국어 학습자와 한국어 도우미, 그리고 한국어 교사의 한국어 도우미 프로그램에 대한 요구 및 활동 평가를 조사, 분석하여 초급 단계를 중심으로 한국어 도우미 프로그램의 효율성을 높일 방안을 제시했다는데 의미가 있다.
