본 연구는 한국어 교육에 있어서 반드시 동반되어야 할 언어문화 교육으로써 대중매체, 특히 신문의 특성을 활용한 효과적인 한국어 문화 교육 방안에 대하여 논의하고자 하는데 그 목적을 둔다. 본 연구는 가장 처음 한국어를 학습하게 되는 외국인 초급 학습자 중심의 매체교육 단계를 중심으로 논의하였다.
본 연구는 한국어교육에 있어 대중매체, 특히 신문을 활용한 효과적인 한국어 문화 교육 방안에 대한 논의이며, 언어교육과 문화교육이 개별적으로 이루어지는 것이 아닌 언어문화 통합교육으로 이루어져야 한다는 전제를 가지고 있다.
본 연구의 목적에 따른 연구방법은 관련문헌 및 논문검색을 통한 선행연구 검토를 하여 여기서 얻어진 내용을 참고하여 논의를 정리하였다. 본론에서는 크게 2가지로 나누어 논의를 진행한다. 문화교육에 대한 개념과 특성, 한국어 문화교육에서의 신문활용 방향과 실제, 한국어 문화교육에서의 신문활용교육 교수학습방안을 제시하였다.
영상과 다양한 매체에 익숙한 학습자들에게 이러한 매체를 활용한 언어문화교육은 반드시 필요한 것이며 이를 위한 체계화된 매체언어에 대한 교육은 뒤따라야 하는 것이다. 외국인을 위한 한국어 문화교육에서도 예외일 수는 없다. 일반적으로 신문활용교육은 언어학습 부분에서는 학습자의 동기 유발 측면, 다독, 다양한 정보의 습득 등으로 긍정적인 평가를 받고 있다. 또한 선행 실시 국가들에 의해 그 교육적 효과가 이론 및 실험 등에 의해 입증되었다. 학습자들은 교재안의 획일화된 내용이 아닌 다양한 방법과 몇 가지 상황을 통해 실생활과 연관 지어 생각하는 사고 확대의 기회를 가지며 이를 응용한 교수-학습을 전개할 수 있다.
신문을 이용한 한국어 문화학습 방안 연구에 있어서 얻어낸 이론적 원칙은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 신문을 수업에 유용한 자료로 활용하여 학습자 중심의 활동이 되어야 한다.
둘째, 의사소통 능력의 함양을 위해서 학습자 스스로의 연습의 양과 질이 중요하다는 것을 인식한다면 소집단 학습 형태를 이용하여 언어를 습득하는데 적절한 수업 환경을 조성해야 한다.
셋째, 신문을 활용한 수업은 도입 및 제시, 연습과 활용, 정리 단계의 활동으로 이루어질 수 있다.
신문활용교육은 효율적인 언어학습을 위한 형태로 적용되고 확대되어 사용될 수 있다. 앞으로의 신문활용교육을 이용한 한국어 문화교육 연구가 지속적으로 이어져야 할 것이다.
