본 연구는 초등학교 귀국학생 특별학급의 학생․교사 요구분석과 특별학급에서 사용하고 있는 지도 자료 분석을 바탕으로 귀국학생 특별학급에서 사용할 수 있는 한국어 초급 교재 개발 방안을 마련하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 목적에 따라 다음과 같이 연구를 진행하였다.
Ⅰ장에서는 귀국학생들이 한국어를 좀 더 쉽고 체계적으로 배울 수 있는 교재를 개발하는 데 그 목적이 있음을 밝히고, 그에 관련된 선행 연구들을 교재, 교육과정과 교육방법, 지도교사, 일본의 사례, 적응으로 나누어 살펴보았다.
Ⅱ장에서는 초등학교 귀국학생의 교육현황을 간단히 알아보고, 대상학교의 학생과 교사에게 설문조사를 실시하여 그 내용을 분석하였다.
Ⅲ장에서는 현재 초등학교 귀국학생 특별학급에서 사용하고 있는 교재들을 초등학교 국어교과서, 교육청 단위 개발 교재, 학교자체 개발 교재, 재외동포용 교재, 대학이나 출판사 등의 교재로 나누어 분석하였다
Ⅳ장에서는 Ⅱ장과 Ⅲ장의 내용에 근거하여 초등학교 귀국학생을 위한 한국어 초급 교재 개발의 방향을 다음과 같이 제시하였다. 첫째, 교재의 내용은 가족, 학교 등 학생의 생활이 중심이 되어야 한다. 둘째, 학생들의 흥미를 유발하기 위해 대화문은 만화로 구성한다. 셋째, 정규 교과학습에 필요한 기초 지식을 익히게 한다. 넷째, 한국 사회와 문화에 대한 이해를 돕는다. 다섯째, 다양한 활동을 포함한 교재이어야 한다. 여섯째, 귀국반에서 급별에 따라 적시에 적용할 수 있는 범용교재로 워크북 형태를 포함한 교재이어야 한다. 위 원칙을 기본으로 하여 교수요목의 선정, 전체 단원과 개별 단원을 구성하고 교재의 실제를 제시하였다.
Ⅴ장에서는 본고의 내용을 요약하였으며 한국어 교재 개발의 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 살펴보았다.
지금까지 귀국학생을 위한 교재 개발에 관한 연구가 실제적인 연구보다는 이론에 입각한 연구들이 대부분이었다. 그러나 본 연구는 귀국학생과 지도교사의 요구 분석을 보다 자세하게 진행하였으며 귀국학생들을 지도하고 있는 실제 교재들을 분석하고 교재 개발의 방향을 세운 후 교재의 실제까지 제시하였다는 데 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to develop the beginner's Korean textbook for the special class of elementary student returnee children by analyzing current curriculum and requests-analysis of a student & teacher about this class. This study progressed as follows according to these purpose.
Chapter I stated the purpose of this study and introduced the preceding researches that is textbook, curriculum, education method, Japanese case, teacher and adaptation of elementary student returnee children in order to develop easier and systematical learning textbook.
Chapter Ⅱ searched circumstances of elementary student returnee children and analyzed the survey of their teachers and them.
Chapter Ⅲ classified and analyzed textbook for special class for elementary student returnee children, published by Ministry of Education, published by local school, for peoples who are abroad, published by University and publishing company.
Chapter Ⅳ offered direction on the development of the beginner's Korean textbook for elementary school returnee children based on the Chapter Ⅱ and Ⅲ as follows : First, contents of the textbook must consist of student's life such as family, school. Second, Conversation sentences must consist of cartoon for causing interest of students. Third, textbook includes basic knowledge that need to formality learning. Fourth, help comprehension about Korean society and culture. Fifth, textbook includes various activities. Sixth, textbook includes form of the workbook as a mediocrity textbook that can apply timely according to grade in the special class. Chapter Ⅴ summarized contents of this study and stated the direction of Korean textbook for returnee children.
Until now, most of the researches on development of the beginner's Korean textbook for returnee children were based on theory, rather than the actual research, however, it is significant that this study analyzes the needs of returnee children and teachers more detailed and the materials which are teaching returnee children now. Presents direction of development of teaching materials and textbooks and provides the actual materials.
