관용표현(idiom)은 그 나라 사람들이 오랫동안 습관적으로 사용해온 표현이다. 또한 구성단어의 사전적 정의의 합외 제 3의 의미를 가지며 구와 절의 형태를 지니고 있는 것을 뜻한다. 이러한 관용표현은 그것이 사용되는 국가의 역사와 사회 그리고 문화를 반영하는 언어의 집적물이다. 한국인들은 일상대화 속에서 은연중에 자연스럽게 관용표현의 의미를 익히지만 외국인들이 한국어를 학습할 때 관용표현의 의미를 파악하기에 어려움 겪고 있어 체계적인 교육 방안이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 한국어 교재를 바탕으로 관용표현 교육의 실태와 문제점을 파악하고 이를 바탕으로 하여 관용표현 교수 · 학습 방안을 제시하였다.
Ⅱ장에서 분석을 토대로 발견한 문제점으로는 학습 단계에 따른 관용표현 목록 설정이 체계적이지 못하고, 관용표현 제시 방법이 적절하지 못하며, 관용표현 의미 설명이 미흡하다는 것이다. 또한 확인 학습이 충실히 이루어 지지 않아 학습 이해도를 측정하기 어렵고, 색인에 누락된 관용표현과 완전하지 못한 형태의 제시도 문제점으로 지적된다.
Ⅲ장에서는 Ⅱ장에서의 문제점을 극복하기 위해 학습자 수준에 따라 관용표현 목록을 제시하고, 관용표현 학습(제시단계→ 설명단계→활용단계)과 이를 복습하고 이해도를 측정할 수 있는 확인 학습을 마련함으로써 관용학습의 체계를 마련하였다. 그리고 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 하여 교수 · 학습 지도안은 구안하였다.
본 연구는 불특정 외국인을 대상으로 하여 보편적인 관용표현 교수 · 학습 방안을 마련하였기 때문에 대상 선정이 구체적이지 않아 각 학습자의 특성을 반영하는 데 미흡하다는 한계를 지니고 있다. 이에 앞으로 언어권, 문화권, 연령, 지식수준 등을 기준으로 구체적인 학습자 대상을 분류하고 이들을 위한 구체적인 교육 방안이 개발되어야 할 것이다.

The idiom is an expression that people in each country have used habitually for a long time. And, the idiom has not only dictionary definitions of words but also the third meaning to have forms of phrases and clauses. The idiomatic expression is an integration of languages that reflects history, society and culture of the country that idiom is used. The Korean people can learn meaning of idiomatic expression naturally and unconsciously at daily dialog, while foreigners have difficulties at understanding of idiomatic expression while learning the Korean language to require systematic education methods. This study examined actual conditions and problems of idiomatic expression education based on teaching materials of the Korean language, and it suggested teaching and learning methods of idiomatic expression.
The study found out problems based on analysis of Chapter Ⅱ: The list of idiomatic expression at learning stages was not set systematically, and suggestion method of idiomatic expression was not proper, and explanation of meaning of idiomatic expression was not satisfactory. And, confirmation learning was not done enough to be difficult to measure understanding of learning, and it had problems of missing idiomatic expression as well as presentation of incomplete forms.
Chapter Ⅲ presented list of idiomatic expression at each level of learners to overcome problems of Chapter Ⅱ, and it made confirmation learning that could learn idiomatic expression (presentation state→ explanation stage→use stage) and review it and measure understanding, so that it established idiom learning system. Based on the contents, the study made teaching and learning methods.
This study made teaching and learning method of general idiomatic expression for unspecified foreigners to select subjects in uncertain way not enough to reflect characteristics of each learner. Therefore, subjects of learners should be classified concretely based on language circle, culture circle, ages and knowledge level, etc to develop concrete education methods.
