국악가요는 국악의 장단이나 가락을 살려 대중이 쉽게 부를 수 있도록 만든 창작가요로 1980년대부터 2000년대 초반까지 대중들의 관심을 받았던 음악장르이다. 본 연구의 목적은 역사적 흐... 국악가요는 국악의 장단이나 가락을 살려 대중이 쉽게 부를 수 있도록 만든 창작가요로 1980년대부터 2000년대 초반까지 대중들의 관심을 받았던 음악장르이다. 본 연구의 목적은 역사적 흐름을 통해 국악가요의 탄생과 전개에 대해 검토하고, 대중적인 인기를 얻은 다수의 국악가요의 음악분석을 통해 국악가요라는 장르의 음악적 경향을 고찰하고 나아가 국악의 대중화를 위해 시도되었던 국악가요의 역할을 조명해보는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 국악가요와 가장 유사했던 과거의 음악장르인 1930년대의 신민요의 역사적 배경과 음악적 특징에 대해 연구하였으며, 1970년대의 문화운동에서 국악가요의 시작점을 찾을 수 있었다. 본격적으로 국악가요가 탄생했던 1980년대의 음악문화계의 모습을 통해 발전과정을 살펴보았으며, 국악가요를 작곡한 작곡가별로 나누어 작품현황과 음악분석을 통해 보다 구체적인 국악가요의 음악적 특징을 고찰할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 도출된 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국악가요와 신민요는 매스미디어의 발달로 인해 탄생하고, 발전한 음악장르라는 점과 모두 전통음악적 요소를 기반으로 한 창작음악장르였다는 점에서 유사하나, 신민요는 전통민요의 유입된 서양음악어법이 결합되어 만들어진 데에 비해, 국악가요는 서양음악어법으로 점철된 음악문화를 다시금 전통으로 회귀하고자 하는 데에 시작점이 있다는 차이가 있다. 둘째, 국악가요의 직접적인 탄생배경에는 1970년대의 문화운동과 1980년대의 국악계의 대중화를 위한 움직임이 있었다. 국악가요는 대중음악계와 국악계의 작곡가들에 의해 다양하게 작곡되었으며, 국악관현악단의 증가와 국악실내악단의 창단은 국악가요의 확산에 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 국악가요를 작곡한 작곡가들의 작품현황을 분석한 결과, 각각의 국악가요는 작곡자의 다양한 음악적 표현의 한 방식으로 국악적인 요소를 삽입시키거나, 민족음악론의 연장선에서 사회적인 메시지와 우리적인 노래를 위한 작곡자의 의도로 창작되어진 경우, 그리고 국악의 대중화를 목적에 두고 작곡되어진 경우 등으로 그 갈래를 나눌 수 있다. 넷째, 국악가요의 대표곡을 분석한 결과, 경토리와 메나리토리-서양음계의 장조와 단조적 선율특성을 보이는 두 부류로 나누어졌으며, 장단 역시 전자의 경우 후자보다 비교적 빠른 장단으로 구성되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 반주악기의 경우, 공통적으로 신디사이저의 화음반주에 가야금, 장구, 대금, 소금 등의 국악기가 대표적인 반주악기로 분석되었다. 결론적으로, 1980년대 민족적인 것에 대한 향수와 국악의 대중화라는 시대적 흐름 속에서 탄생한 국악가요는 2000년대 초반까지 활발하게 창작되어졌으나 이후로는 더 이상 질적, 양적인 발전을 하지 못하고 그 맥이 희미했졌다. 그러나 국악가요는 21세기 퓨전국악으로 이어지는 밑바탕이자 전환기적 음악장르로서 역할을 수행하였으며, 우리 것에 대한 음악인들과 대중의 고민과 요구에 응한 실천적 움직임이었으며, 음악장르였음에 그 역사적 의의가 있다. 주제어: 국악가요, 퓨전국악, 문화운동, 국악실내악단.

The korean folk song is a genre in which the rhythms and melodies of the korean traditional music are enriched so abundantly that people can easily sing along with the folk songs and the genre attracted many korean people from 1980's to the early 2000's. The purpose of the research is to review the birth and development of the korean folk songs, study the musical trend of the korean folk song through the analysis of the several korean folk songs which gained popularity during those days, and shed light on the role of the korean folk songs which were written to popularize korean traditional music. So, I reviewed the new folk songs of 1930's which is mostly similar to the korean folk songs of 1980's and could spot the origin of the new folk songs of 1980's in the cultural movement of 1970's. And I looked into the process of development of 1980's music culture in which the full-fledged mainstream of korean folk songs was shaped, and could consider the concrete musical features of the korean folk songs through the pieces of music and musical analysis based on the music composers who wrote the korean folk songs those days. I came to the conclusion through the research as follows. First, both korean classical songs and new folk songs are similar in the aspects that it came into the world and matured through the development of mass-media but contrary to the fact that the new folk songs were formed through the western music system which flew into the korean classical songs, I could trace the efforts to return to the tradition in the korean traditional folk songs even if the music culture of those days was studded with the western music system. Secondly, there were 1970's culture movement and 1980's popularization of the traditional korean music in the direct background of the birth of korean folk songs of 1980's. The korean folk songs of 1980's were written diversely by the composers of pop music and traditional music sectors, and the increase of traditional orchestras and chamber orchestras also affected the diffusion of the korean folk songs of 1980's. Thirdly, as a result of the introspection of the music trend of the composers who wrote the korean folk songs of 1980's, it came out into the open that the korean folk songs were written as a way of composer's diverse musical expressions or as a part of the composer's intentions to deliver the social messages and compose independent national songs based on the ethnomusicological background, or for the purpose of the popularization of the korean folk songs. Fourthly, as a result of the analysis of typical korean folk songs of 1980's, the songs were composed by the two melodious systems of Kyungtori(Major in western music) and Menaritori(Minor in western music), and the former is found to be relatively faster than the latter in rhythm. The traditional musical insturments such as Kayagum(korean string instrument), Jang-gu(korean drum), Daegum(large pipe), and Sogum(small pipe) are found to have been used as the accompanying musical instruments with the common melodious accompaniment of the synthesizer. In conclusion, the korean folk song of 1980's was born with the stream of the times which was the nostalgia for the traditional things of 1980's and popularization of the korean traditional music and the korean folk songs had been composed strenuously until the early 2000. But from then on, the trend has been faint as it could not achieve the quantitative and qualitative growth . However, the korean folk song genre played a role as a transitional music sector which lead to the 21 century's fusion korean folk songs, and it has a historical significance that the birth of korean folk songs of 1980's was a practical movement which corresponded to the thirst of our things from the general public and musicians.
