역사 유적지는 풍부하고 다양한 유형의 문화적, 종교적, 사회적인 산물을 후세의 사람들에게 전수하여 주는 바, 이들에 대한 보호대책과 이들을 이 시대의 삶의 현장 속에 구현하는 방법 등... 역사 유적지는 풍부하고 다양한 유형의 문화적, 종교적, 사회적인 산물을 후세의 사람들에게 전수하여 주는 바, 이들에 대한 보호대책과 이들을 이 시대의 삶의 현장 속에 구현하는 방법 등이 도시계획과 개발사업계획을 수립하는 기초가 되어야 함을 고려하여야 한다. 전 세계적으로 급속하게 진행된 도시화로 인한 대규모 주택단지와 산업화에 따른 공업단지 등을 조성으로 중요한 고고학적 가치가 있는 유적지의 잠식과 파괴에 대한 보호를 강화하는 추세이다. 이에 따라 오늘날 유적지에 지어지는 박물관은 유적지를 그대로 유지하면서 그 위에 건물이 지어지는 매립형, 유적지와 동화되는 분산배치형, 유적지 내부의 건물을 그대로 활용한 리모델링형 등 다양한 형태로 현지형 유적지 박물관이 건축되어지고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 전시 및 보호의 기능을 수행해야 하는 현지형 유적지 박물관의 물리적, 사회적 요구를 만족하기 위한 방법을 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 합리적인 박물관의 프로그램을 구성하고 이를 바탕으로 현지형 유적지 박물관 계획을 제시하기 위하여 익산 미륵사지석탑을 위한 익산박물관 신축공사를 연구의 대상으로 선정하였다. 박물관 전시 유형 및 사례분석, 대상 박물관의 현황 분석을 통하여 계획의 범주를 제시하고 건축 방향을 수립하기 위하여 다음과 같은 선행 사항이 요구되며 그 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 박물관 계획을 효과적으로 진행하기 위해 대상 유적지에 대한 관련 자료와 문헌 조사가 요구된다. 유적지를 보호하며 효과적으로 전시될 수 있는 계획을 반영하여야 한다. 둘째, 유적지 박물관의 사례분석을 하고 유형과 특성을 고찰하여 대상 유적지를 위한 적합한 방법을 계획에 반영하여야 한다. 셋째, 분류된 유형 중 대상 유적지에 적합한 박물관 및 전시 유형을 선별하여 이에 맞는 디자인을 박물관 사례를 분석하여 반영하여야 한다. 본 연구는 문화유적지 현지형 박물관 계획의 방향에 있어 합리적인 프로그램을 구성하고 이를 바탕으로 건축계획을 제시하는데 중점을 두었다. 그러나 단순히 계획에서 그치는 것이 아닌 실제적으로 계획 방안이 효율적으로 추진되기 위해서는 행정기관과의 체계적인 공조를 통해 인허가 관련 행정절차도 동시에 추진해야 한다. 필요 시설 프로그램 및 전시 방법에 대해서는 건물의 구조, 채광 및 환기 시스템 등 기술적인 측면을 면밀히 검토하여 건축 계획이 추가적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.
