본 연구는 국내 이공계 대학 진학을 앞두고 있는 예비 외국인 유학생에게 학부 전공과목의 이해와 학습에 도움이 되는 효과적인 한국어 전공 어휘 교육 방안을 제시하는 데 그 목적이 있다.
유학생이 교과를 학습하고 이해하기 위해서는 전공 어휘의 이해가 선행되어야 할 필요가 있다. 어휘는 언어 표현과 이해의 기반으로서 전공 학습의 기본이 되기 때문이다. 따라서 학습효과와 성취감을 높일 수 있는 어휘를 신중하게 검토하여 선정하는 것은 지극히 중요한 교육적 과제라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 선정한 어휘를 효과적으로 제시하는 것 또한 중요하다.
이공계 전공 어휘는 사용 범위가 한정적이고 일상 어휘와이 차이가 큼으로 인하여 일반적인 한국어 교육 현장에서는 접하기 어려운 실정이다. 따라서 이공계 학부의 외국인 유학생들은 입학 전에 전공 어휘를 접하지 못하고 학부에 진학하는 경우가 많다. 실제로 기존의 학문 목적 학습자를 대상으로 한 연구를 살펴보면 유학생이 교과를 학습하는데 가장 어려움을 겪는 부분으로 전공 서적과 강의에서 나오는 전공 어휘에 대한 이해 부족, 그리고 전공 서적을 읽는데 시간이 너무 많이 걸린다는 점을 공통적으로 지적했다.
이러한 필요성에 근거하여 본 연구는 이공계 학부로 진학하기 전, 유학생에게 필요한 전공 어휘와 효과적인 교육 방안을 마련하기 위해 이공계 대학에서 전공과목을 가르치고 있는 교수와 이공계 학부로 진학 예정인 유학생을 대상으로 요구 분석을 실시하여 그 결과를 바탕으로 학부 입학 전에 학습해야 할 과목과 어휘를 선정하고, 이를 효과적으로 교육하고 있는 방안을 마련하였다.
먼저 학문 목적 한국어 교육은 학습자의 요구를 반영해야 하고, 전문 분야의 속성에 맞는 교육이 이루어야 함을 밝히고, 학문 목적 어휘교육에서의 어휘선정 방법과 학습자의 요구분석 방법을 알아보았다. 그 다음 면담조사와 설문조사를 실시하여 교수자와 학습자의 요구 분석을 하였다. 설문 조사 결과와 빈도수를 바탕으로 하여 수학, 물리학, 화학 3과목에 대한 기초어휘를 선정하였다. 어휘 선정 후, 선정된 어휘를 효과적으로 교육하는 방안을 제시하였다. 교육 방안은 설문조사 결과와 어휘 분석 결과를 바탕으로 이루어졌고, 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다.
첫째, 과목별로 어휘적 특성이 다르게 나타나기 때문에 과목별로 어휘를 제시한다.
둘째, 상황에 따라 의미가 달라진다는 것을 인식하게 하여 일상어와 전공 어휘의 사용법을 교육해야 한다. 이때 학습자가 어휘 사용의 차이를 구분할 수 있도록 사용 맥락을 제시하고 전공 어휘의 용법을 중심으로 제시한다.
셋째, 관련성이 높은 명사와 서술어를 함께 교육해야 한다. 이공계 전공 어휘는 명사가 큰 비중을 차지하고 있다. 하지만 전공 어휘 교육에서 서술어를 배제한다면 실제 상황에서 학습한 어휘를 사용하기 힘들다. 따라서 관련성이 높은 명사와 서술어를 함께 제시한다.
넷째, 이공계열 특성상 학문적 뿌리가 서양에 있기 때문에 외래어가 많을 수밖에 없고, 동시에 한자어도 발달하였다. 따라서 전공 외래어 교육과 한자어를 활용한 어휘 교육 방안이 필요하다.
본 논문은 이공계 학습자를 위한 전공 한국어 어휘 교육 방안을 연구하여 효과적으로 전공 어휘를 제시·활용하는 방안을 모색해보고자 하였다. 이를 통하여 이공계 학습자들을 대상으로 하는 한국어 교육의 질적·양적 발전에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to propose effective learning methods of academic vocabulary for Korean language learners who will study natural sciences and engineering in university.
International students who will major in natural science and engineering should understand the vocabulary specific to their major because vocabulary is one of the most essential and fundamental elements for understanding and studying the contents of their major subject. Thus it is a very important educational task to examine carefully and list the appropriate vocabulary to make learning effective and heighten the learner’s sense of accomplishment. It is also important to effectively present the list.
Learning natural sciences and engineering vocabulary is very difficult in a general Korean curriculum because the range is limited and the gap between formal and informal vocabulary is huge. Thus, the international student who studies natural sciences and engineering goes to university without sufficient knowledge of the requisite vocabulary. According to a review of previous research on Korean for academic purposes, most of the research commonly points out that this is the most difficult part of completing the courses for their major.
To better understand learner's perception and preference with regard to natural science and engineering vocabulary in Korean, a brief survey was given. A preliminary interview investigation was made in order to develop the items for the questionnaire. The results of this survey formed the foundation for selecting subjects, vocabulary and effective learning methods.
Herein it is suggested that mathematics, physics and chemistry are appropriate as prior learning subjects before goes to university. Vocabulary frequencies of these three subjects was then investigated in order to select the basic vocabulary for natural science and engineering. After selection of the vocabulary, effective learning methods are suggested as follows.
First, selected vocabulary is presented according to the subject because vocabulary is given different meaning depending on the subject. Second, there are differences between everyday language and academic vocabulary. Thus context of use should be presented with a focus on usage. Third, some collocations, namely high correlations between noun and predicate, are presented at the same time. Fourth, there are many foreign loanwords and Chinese characters in the natural sciences and engineering in Korean. Thus learning methods for this kind of vocabulary is also required.
It is hoped that this research will be helpful for vocabulary learning for international students who major in natural sciences and engineering in Korea and that this research may be utilized as a reference for future research on effective a way to present and teach academic vocabulary.
