The purpose of this study is to support international students' study life by providing a vocabulary list that can be used by international students majoring in science and engineering universally and even to be able to finish the international students’ study life with a better academic performance.
Difficulties for international students majoring in science and engineering are own difficulties of studies and lessons in Korean. Especially terms, used in the science and the engineering, are generated from a variety of routes, therefore it is a big difficult for international students since their first language is not Korean. If a vocabulary list is provided for them, it is useful for their study.
The main purpose of the study is to provide a vocabulary list for international students majoring in science and engineering. Thus, they would be able to learn little easier.
In Chapter 1, the examination of the previous studies and the reasons for running this study is conducted. Numbers of international students are increasing. Researchers have presented the need for vocabulary education and researches for vocabulary selection for this study have examined.
In Chapter 2, the theoretical background of the study is examined. The concept of Korean for academic purposes in other studies is searched and examined. As a result, the concept of Korean vocabulary of academic purposes has been summarized.
In Chapter 3, the theoretical background for the target selection and the principle of selection is described.
In Chapter 4, the research method and range are decided. The range is science and engineering generally, to select the text for making a lexical, 8 majors are selected among science and engineering majors. Their subject in the curriculum is examined then 3 common subjects are found. And Lexical is made by using the index of 3 common subjects' text books.
In Chapter 5, the lexical is analyzed. The lexical is classified Chinese word, native word, foreign work and compound word by their origin. And their percentage of the vocabulary is examined. Eventually 496 words are selected for the academic purpose vocabulary for international students majoring in science and engineering. And a comparison the vocabulary list with the lexical is made for verifying the utility.

이공계를 전공하고 있는 유학생들이 겪는 어려움은 이공계 학업 자체의 어려움과 한국어로 진행되는 수업에 있다. 특이 이공계에서 사용되는 어휘들은 다양한 경로를 통해서 생겨났으며, 이러한 형태의 용어들 때문에 모국어가 한국어가 아닌 유학생들에게는 큰 어려움이 될 것이다. 이때 범용으로 사용될 수 있는 어휘들의 목록이 제공된다면, 이공계 유학생의 학업에 유용하게 사용될 것이다. 이 연구에서는 이공계를 전공하는 유학생들에게 범용으로 사용될 수 있는 어휘목록을 제공하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 통해서 이공계 유학생들은 조금 더 수월하게 학업을 수행할 수 있을 것이다.
1 장에서는 연구를 실행하려는 이유와 선행연구를 살펴보았다. 유학생의 수가 증가하고 있음을 살펴보았다. 그리고 학문용 어휘교육의 필요성을 제시한 연구들과 학문용 어휘 선정과 관련된 연구들을 먼저 살펴보았다.
2 장에서는 연구를 하는 이론적 배경을 살펴보았다. 다른 연구에서 다룬 학문 목적의 한국어의 개념을 확인해보고, 한국어 어휘의 개념을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해서 학문목적의 한국어 어휘의 개념에 대해서 정리해보았다.
3 장에서는 선정대상을 위한 이론적 배경을 살펴보고, 선정 원리를 나타내었다.
4 장에서는 연구방법 그리고 범위에 대한 선정을 하였는데, 범위는 이공계 전반으로 하였고 그 범위를 설정한 방법은 각 이공계의 커리큘럼을 확인하여 그중 공통적으로 배우는 과목들을 확인하였다. 그리고 그중 공통이 될 만한 교재를 선정하여 색인을 이용해 어휘뭉치를 만들었다.
5 장에서는 이 어휘뭉치를 분석하였는데, 어휘뭉치를 의미단위로 나누어서 한자어, 고유어, 외래어, 복합어로 분류를 하였다. 그리고 어휘의 비율을 살펴보았다. 최종적으로 496개의 어휘를 이공계 학문목적의 한국어 어휘로 선정하였다. 또한 어휘목록의 사용 검증을 위해 어휘뭉치와 비교하여 그 효용성을 확인하여 보았다.
