이 연구는 다문화 가정에서 이중 언어를 경험하고 사용하는 아이들을 대상으로 하는 연
구이다. 한국인 아버지와 조부모가 이중 언어 사용을 반대하는 상황에서 다문화 가정 아이
들이 겪을 수 있는 정체성 혼란이나 위기상황을 알아보고 이중 언어 사용이 주는 긍정적인
측면과 의의를 알아보고자 한다.
다문화가정의 자녀들은 태어날 때부터 이중 언어를 사용할 수 있는 충분한 언어 환경에
있음에도 불구하고, 부정적인 인식으로 인해 이중 언어를 활용하거나 이중 언어 교육을 받
을 수 있는 기회는 주어지지 않고 있다. 다문화 가정 자녀들과 부모들의 이중 언어 사용에
대한 경험과 이중 언어 교육이 다문화 가정 자녀와 부모에게 어떤 영향을 주는지 설문과
면담, 참여자와의 대화가 이 연구의 주 자료가 되어, 현재 이중 언어 활용 현실을 짚어보고
이중 언어를 접하는 다문화 가정이 가지고 있는 문제점과 이중 언어 활용의 의미를 이야기
해보고자 한다.
이중 언어를 사용하는 다문화가정 자녀들의 사례를 분석하여 이중 언어 사용이 갖는 의
미를 탐색해보기 위해 이 연구에서 제시한 문제는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다문화가정 자녀의
이중 언어 활용 배경을 알아보고 둘째, 이중 언어를 활용함으로써 얻어지는 경험에 관해
이야기 했으며, 셋째, 이중 언어 사용이 다문화 가정 자녀들에게 주는 의미는 무엇인지 알
아보았다.
다문화가정의 자녀들에게 엄마의 모어는 비의도적이며 긍정적인 언어 환경에서 습득되어
야 한다. 하지만 대부분의 사례에서 엄마의 모어는 가정과 사회에서 의미 있게 사용되어지
지 못하고 뒤늦게 학습되어지고 있다. 엄마가 중국인이라는 이유로 아이의 한국어 발달이 늦을까봐 엄마의 모어는 관심 밖의 언어가 되었고, 더불어 엄마 나라의 문화까지 존중받지
못하고 있었다. 하지만 모어의 습득과 활용은 가정에서 엄마에 대한 존중감이 높아져서 아
이들의 정서적 안정에도 기여하고 있으며, 올바른 가치관과 정체성을 확립하게 해주는 역
할을 해주었다.
이 연구는 중국 다문화 가정만을 대상으로 하며, 때문에 연구 대상이 제한적일 수밖에
없다. 이중 언어 활용이 주는 의미를 정확하게 파악하기 위해 다음 연구에서는 연구 참가
자의 폭을 확대할 필요가 있다. 다양한 환경에 있는 연구 대상자를 참여시켜 연구를 확대
해 나가야 한다.
