본고에서는 신라 천년의 고도이며 불국사와 석굴암등이 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재되어 있는 경주지역의 일본어 관광안내자료에 나타난 한자어의 오류를 지적하고 올바른 한자를 제시하였다. 본고에서 한자어의 오류를 분석의 대상으로 삼은 것은 한국과 일본은 같은 한자 문화권이지만 실제 사용면에서는 발음과 표기의 차이로 인해 의미 전달에 많은 차이가 있기 때문이다. 특히 유적과 유물 등을 설명하는 용어에는 인명이나 지명과 같은 고유명사가 많아 자칫 틀린 한자로 번역하면 전혀 다른 곳을 가리키거나 가공의 인물로 왜곡되는 경우가 많기 때문이다.
외국인 관광객은 관광지에서 배포하고 있는 관광안내자료를 통해서 해당 지역의 역사와 문화를 이해한다는 점에서 볼 때, 잘못된 관광안내자료는 경주지역에 대한 이미지를 손상시킬 수 있고 나아가 우리의 역사를 왜곡시킬 수도 있다는 점에서 관광안내자료에 나타난 한자어의 오류를 바로잡는 연구는 시급하고도 중요한 과제라 할 수 있다. 실제로 본고에서 경주지역 관광안내자료의 한자어 오류를 분석한 결과를 보면 동일한 자료 내에서도 한자의 표기가 다른 경우가 다수 발견되었고, 원본인 한국어 자료와 일본어 자료의 유물과 유적지의 한자 표기가 다른 경우도 상당수 발견되어 문제의 심각성을 확인할 수 있었다.
본고의 연구 방법으로는 분석 대상 자료에서 오류로 분류된 한자를 ①인명의 한자어 오류，韩语毕业论文，②지명의 한자어 오류, ③문화재 및 유적지 관련 용어의 한자어 오류, ④불교 및 건축 관련 용어의 한자어 오류, ⑤일반 한자어 오류, ⑥단순 한자어 오류 등 6개의 유형으로 분류하고 오류의 판단 근거와 함께 올바른 한자어를 대안으로 제시하였다. 오류의 판단 기준은 각종 문헌과 문화재청, 한국관광공사 홈페이지, 그리고 표준국어대사전과 두산세계대백과사전 등에 수록된 관련내용을 근거로 제시하였다.
이번 조사는 경주지역의 일부자료를 분석한 결과이지만 다른 지역의 관광안내자료도 사정은 크게 다르지 않을 것이다. 따라서 앞으로 한국에 있는 전체 관광안내자료의 전면적인 재검토와 확인 작업이 조속한 시일 내에 반드시 이뤄져야 할 것으로 생각된다.

This study investigated errors in the use of Chinese characters in Japanese travel guidebooks in the Gyeongju area, the ancient capital city of Shilla for a thousand years, famous also for the USCO World Heritage sites Bulguksa and Seokuram. It has also suggested the correct Chinese characters to use. The reason for this study’s focus is that both Korean and Japanese languages use Chinese characters; however, they show many differences to each other in delivering the meanings of Chinese characters due to their differences in pronunciation and writing in actual use. Such differences may cause problems because travel guidebooks include a large number of proper nouns (e.g. names of people and places) to explain historic sites and remains, and thus the use of incorrect Chinese characters often results in erroneous interpretations and confusion in accurately describing people and places.
Considering that foreign tourists often gain knowledge of and understand the history and culture of the area through travel guidebooks distributed at tourist sites, incorrect guidebooks may not only damage the image of the Gyeongju region but also distort its history. In this regard, analyzing and correcting errors in the use of Chinese characters in travel guidebooks is seen as a very important project. In fact, the study has revealed that in travel guidebooks used in the Gyeongju region, there are a number of cases in which different Chinese characters were adopted for an identical place / person even within the same guide material. Moreover, there are many cases in which Chinese characters used in the Japanese material differ from those in the original Korean material even though they indicate an identical place / person.
The research method of this thesis was to observe the materials and identify Chinese characters which were used incorrectly, and then classify those Chinese characters into the following six types: (i) Errors in person names, (ii) Errors in place names, (iii) Errors in words related to cultural properties and historic sites, (iv) Errors in words related to Buddhism and architecture, (v) Errors in words for general purposes, (vi) Others. Finally, the study has suggested the correct Chinese characters to be used as alternatives, along with criteria for error analysis, which are based on various materials drawn from the Cultural Heritage Administration homepage, the Korea Tourism Organization homepage, Korean Unabridged Dictionary, and Dusan World Encyclopedia.
The current study has focused on materials in the Gyeongju region. However, travel guidebooks in other regions may have similar problems which need to be addressed.
