A Study on Method of Korean Culture Lesson by Application of Essay
- Focusing on ‘Lunar New Year’s Day’, a Seasonal Custom

The study suggests a method of culture lesson for teaching Korean with s about ‘Lunar New Year’s Day’, a seasonal custom in Korea. The targets of this study are students with more than intermediate Korean. The purpose of this method is strengthening their knowledge about ‘Lunar New Year’s Day’ and deepening their understanding about Koreans and Korean culture to bring a better communication with Korean.
The existing education methods for teaching Korean with s have been focused only on grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing. The study applies the s about Korean seasonal customs to teach Korean culture. The study suggests an educational method for culture lesson to make an research about customs of Korean Lunar New Year’s Day in 1920s, to compare it with modern customs, and to understand the meaning and influence of ‘Lunar New Year’s Day’ to modern Korean following descriptions of authors who directly experienced culture of Korean seasonal customs.
The subject and vocabulary of s have a strong Korean atmosphere and the contents of s are based on Korean daily lives; these are the reason that the study chooses ‘’ as the text for teaching Korean traditional culture. It can help students to understand Korean culture and emotion for using s with Korean sentiment and thinking.
The main text chosen by the study is 「Lunar New Year’s Day」 written by Jun, Suk-Hee, a female author born in 1919. This work provides a description of customs of Lunar New Year’s Day which the author had experienced in her early years. At that time, the customs were better preserved than now. The names and recipes of traditional foods and ceremonies described in the can help students to understand Korean traditional culture. When 「Lunar New Year’s Day」 was written, there was much change of the traditional customs for Lunar New Year’s Day; therefore, the also can help to compare the customs in it and modern times. Based on understanding the contents of , there is a discussion to lead deeper understanding.
After studying about vocabulary and contents of the text and customs of ‘Lunar New Year’s Day’, the students organize their thoughts and write them down based on their experience about ‘Lunar New Year’s Day’. Thus, the study suggests an educational method for teaching Korean culture with s.
For second chapter, the study makes a research about necessity of cultural and literacy education for Korean language teaching, and about advantage of cultural education using literary works. For third chapter, the study makes a research about characteristics of s as literary works, and about advantages and disadvantages of s as Korean cultural educational text. For fourth chapter, the study suggests 「Lunar New Year’s Day」 as a text for class, and provides culture class for studying vocabularies from the text and an educational method with understanding of 「Lunar New Year’s Day」.
The vocabulary class applies ‘basic terms for Korean culture’ from the National Institute of the Korean Language and drawings. The students can study about ceremonies, foods, and traditional plays of Korean Lunar New Year’s Day by understanding related vocabularies. They also make a discussion about the changes of customs, students’ experience about ‘Lunar New Year’s Day’, and modern ‘Lunar New Year’s Day’. The class is completed by expression of students’ experience about ‘Lunar New Year’s Day’ in writing.
The application of literary works in Korean language teaching has been active. However, it is very rare to use easily understandable s with korean sentiment and culture. Based on Korean culture class with s, the study suggests a comprehensive educational method to teach vocabulary, grammar, reading, speaking, writing, and culture. It is also meaningful to apply s for Korean culture class.
The study leaves one thing to be desired; the method from this study has not been applied to actual classes. The study does not suggest how the students are finding interests to participate the class and study about Korean culture. However, the study organizes the list of s which can be applied to future Korean culture classes. It will be necessary to continue the studies about teaching Korean culture with s.
