본 연구는 다중언어를 구사하는 싱가포르 초급 한국어 학습자의 말하기 사용 양상을 살펴봄으로써, 학습자의 제1언어 또는 제2언어와 제3언어인 한국어 학습의 관련성을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다.
이를 위해 연구 대상자들의 인적 사항 및 언어 사용에 관한 정보도 함께 조사하는 설문을 실시하여 20명을 선정하였고, 언어권별로 각 10명씩 두 집단으로 나누었다. 그림 자료를 통한 말하기 시험을 실시하고 그 결과를 분석하여 다음과 같은 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.
첫째, 다중언어 환경에서 L3로 한국어를 학습하는 학습자는 선행언어 모두에서 영향을 받기는 하나 문법 단위에 따라 다른 전이(transfer)현상이 나타난다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
둘째, 연결어미를 중심으로 한 오류 양상에서는 제3언어가 제1언어에 비해 제2언어에서 더 많은 영향을 받는 것으로 볼 수 있었다.
셋째, 한국어 학습 전에 다른 언어를 L3로 선행 학습한 학습자는 한국어만을 L3로 학습한 학습자보다 더 다양한 연결어미를 사용하였으며 오류 발생에서 좀 더 높은 정확성을 보였다.

The objective of this study is to observe learners from Singapore who are learning Korean as a third language in a multilingual environment, centralizing the research upon the learners’ speaking error, in order to study how a first language (L1) and a second language (L2) which had been acquired beforehand may affect the acquisition of Korean as a third language (L3).
Singapore has established English as its national language (lingua franca), and it has conducted a bilingual policy which requires one additional language among the three remaining official languages to be taught so that the learners may adopt two languages with the finesse of native speakers.
In such an environment, this study aimed to analyze the transfer phase of the Korean language, which was being acquired as an L3, in accordance with L1 and L2. A survey was conducted to investigate the participant’s personal information and to collect data about their language usage, whereby 20 subjects were selected and classified into two groups of 10 according to their language groups. The following facts were confirmed by initiating a speaking test that utilized picture materials and by analyzing the outcome.
