The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of middle school students on English conservation classes provided by native English-speaking teachers and their satisfaction level in an effort to suggest effective ways of utilizing native English-speaking teachers and thereby of improving the communicative competence of learners. The subjects in this study were the students who were in their eighth grade in K middle school located in Gyeonggi Province. A survey was conducted to gather data, and the findings of the study were as follows:
First, English classes in which Korean teachers used both English and Korean were the most common type of instruction that the students received. They considered team teaching provided by both Korean teachers and native instructors to be most conducive to the improvement of English conversation skills, and they supported this type of instruction the most.
Second, the students perceived that Korean teachers placed the most importance in grammar in their classes, that they made the best progress in grammar among English skills when they took their classes, and that grammar should be given the largest weight in English class to boost overall English skills. They didn't have a good understanding of what native instructors spoke when they received their instruction, and they paid their attention to the behavior or facial expressions of native instructors the most in order to understand their explanation.
Third, they didn't expressed much satisfaction with instruction provided by native instructors. They weren't satisfied a lot in terms of interaction, class comprehension, cognitive achievement, conversation skills, self-directed learning, affective domain, content-based instruction and communication. In terms of intriguing effects, however, they were much gratified.
The above-mentioned findings suggest that in order to step up the improvement of the conversation skills of students, team teaching should be provided by both Korean teachers and native instructors. The qualification requirements for native English-speaking teachers should be strengthened to give more satisfaction to students who take their classes, and native instructors should make an effort to spark the interest of students.

본 연구는 중학생들의 원어민 영어 회화 수업에 대한 인식과 만족도를 살펴보고, 이를 바탕으로 원어민 교사의 효과적인 활용 방안을 제시함으로써 학습자의 의사소통능력 향상을 도모하고자 하였다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위해 경기도 소재 K중학교 2학년을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 다음과 같은 사실이 밝혀졌다.
첫째, 학생들은 지금까지 영어 수업 중에 한국인 교사가 영어와 한국어를 섞어 진행하는 수업 유형을 접해 본 적이 가장 많았으며, 회화 능력 향상에는 한국인 교사와 원어민 교사가 진행하는 팀티칭 영어 수업이 가장 도움이 된다고 인식하였고, 이 같은 팀티칭 수업이 학교에서 진행 되는 것에 대한 찬반 여부를 조사한 결과 찬성한다는 의견이 우세했다.
둘째, 학생들은 한국인 교사가 수업 진행 시 문법을 가장 중요하게 다루며, 한국인 교사 수업을 통해 영어 능력 중에 문법이 가장 많이 향상되고, 전반적인 영어 실력 향상을 위해서는 영어 수업에서 문법을 가장 비중 있게 다루어야 한다고 인식하였다. 또한 원어민 교사의 수업 시 영어에 대한 이해도는 그다지 높지 않았으며, 원어민 교사의 설명을 이해하기 위해서는 원어민 선생님의 행동이나 표정에 가장 많이 주목하였다.
셋째, 학생들은 원어민 교사 수업 만족도가 그다지 높지 않았다. 또한 원어민 교사 수업 만족도 중에 상호작용과 이해도와 인지적 영역 성취, 회화능력, 주도적 학습, 정의적 영역, 그리고 내용 기반수업과 의사소통은 그다지 높지 않았으나 흥미 유발은 높은 것으로 나타났다.
이상과 같은 연구결과를 볼 때, 학생들의 회화 능력 향상을 위해서는 한국인 교사와 원어민 교사가 진행하는 팀티칭 영어 수업이 진행되어야 할 것이다. 또한 학생들의 원어민 교사 수업에 대한 만족도 제고를 위해서는 원어민 영어교사 선발 프로그램의 자격이 보다 강화되어야 하며, 원어민 교사들의 학생들 흥미 유발을 위한 노력이 요구된다고 할 수 있다.
