Communication-centered language education has been emphasized since the 1970s, while the need for cultural education in terms of the education of Korean language began to be discussed in the late 1980s. If learners do not understand the culture of the language in learning a language, it is difficult to understand language. Therefore, culture education is significantly important in learning a language. Culture education aims to develop the ability of learners for the successful communication in the context or situation where learners use the target language. Foreigners residing in Korea naturally encounter with Korean culture. From the moment of entering Korea to the moment of leaving, foreigners are surrounded by the backgrounds of history and culture such as commonly-used money and cultural assets in every corner of Seoul. Therefore, understanding the history of the society as well as learning of target language may be essential for understanding different people and the society for foreigners. Furthermore, cultural identity can be established through the comparison of different cultures between their own country and other country.
Something that contains the teaching-learning methods and contents in the process of teaching and learning is required for the education of culture. In this, the required thing is culture-textbooks. Textbooks play a role of suggesting the direction of the class and identifying the contents of the class for learners. In this regard, this study puts the purpose in creating history and culture textbooks, required for the effective education of history and culture. This thesis focused on presenting the unit-composition plans of the Korean history and culture textbooks by analyzing the history and culture contents of existing Korean culture textbooks and selecting the composition methods of Korean history and culture textbooks based on the demand analysis of learners in previous studies. Through discussion, this thesis suggests a new direction of the creation of Korean history and culture textbooks, which have not been sufficiently discussed in the education of Korean language so far and it indicates that studies on Korean language need to be conducted in view of various angles through the connection with other academic areas.
The introduction revealed that the necessity and objectives of culture education and the necessity and objectives of history and culture, and the study methods were set up through the review of previous studies.
Chapter 2 examined the present conditions of Korean culture textbooks and culture type of each textbook through the analysis of textbooks, and the problems of current culture textbooks were pointed out. The concepts and functions of history and culture textbooks, the principles of textbook composition were explored. Based on such exploration, the concepts and functions of textbooks and the principles of textbook composition which are the theoretical backgrounds of this study were investigated. Through this investigation, it examined the significance of creating the textbooks of history and culture.
Chapter 3 attempted to set up the culture types newly based on the categorization and contents of culture education in previous studies. To select the education contents of history and culture textbooks, the contents of history and culture contents in existing Korean culture textbooks were reviewed and analyzed to select the history and culture contents, required for the intermediate and advanced learners of Korean language.
Chapter 4 took the objectives of textbooks into account around history and culture, the composition methods of contents and forms based on the discussion of chapter 3 to present the unit composition models of Korean culture textbooks as well as the real unit composition by focusing on history and culture, targeting the intermediate and advanced learners of Korean language.
Chapter 5 summarized the creation methods of Korean culture textbooks around history and culture based on the study results to suggest the direction of history and culture education in Korean culture education.

한국어 교육에서의 문화 교육 연구는 1970년대부터 의사소통 중심의 언어 교육이 중요함을 인식하게 되면서 비로소 1980년대 후반에 처음으로 문화 교육의 필요성에 대하여 논의되었다. 외국어를 배우는데 있어서 그 나라의 문화를 알지 못하면 언어를 이해할 수 없다고 할 수 있을 정도로 문화를 교육하는 것은 상당히 중요하다. 문화 교육은 학습자가 목표어가 사용되는 맥락과 상황에서 성공적인 의사소통을 할 수 있도록 학습자의 능력을 개발하는 것을 목표로 한다. 한국의 문화는 한국에 거주하는 외국인이 생활을 하게 되면서 자연스럽게 접하게 되는 것이며, 한국에 들어온 순간부터 나갈 때 까지 항상 사용하는 화폐라든지 서울 곳곳에 있는 문화재 등은 역사문화를 배경으로 하고 있다. 외국인이 목표어 사회의 역사를 학습하고 이해하는 것은 그 나라의 사람들과 그 나라의 사회를 이해하는 데 중요한 자료가 되며, 나아가 자국과 타국의 문화 비교를 통해 문화 정체성을 확립할 수 있다.
문화를 교육을 위해서는 교수-학습 과정에서 교수-학습 방법과 내용을 담고 있는 무언가가 필요하다. 그것이 문화 교재인 것이다. 교재는 교사에게는 수업의 방향을 제시해주고 학습자에게는 수업의 내용을 확인할 수 있는 역할을 한다. 이에 본 연구는 역사문화를 효과적으로 교육하기 위하여 필요한, 역사문화 교재를 개발하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이러한 목적에 따라 선행연구의 학습자 요구 분석을 바탕으로 기존 한국 문화 교재의 역사 문화 내용을 분석하여, 학습할 역사문화 내용과 구성 방법을 선정하여 이를 바탕으로 한국 역사문화 교재의 단원 구성 방안을 제시하는 데 중점을 두었다. 이와 같은 논의를 통하여 본고에서는 한국어 교육에서 지금까지 논의가 미비했던 한국 역사문화 교재 개발에 대하여 새로운 방향을 제시하였고, 한국어에 대한 연구가 다른 학문과의 연계를 통하여 다양한 각도에서 이루어져야 할 필요가 있음을 밝혔다.
서론에서는 문화 교육의 필요성과 목표, 역사문화 교육의 필요성을 밝히고, 선행연구를 검토를 통해 연구의 방법을 설정하였다.
2장에서는 한국 문화 교재의 현황과 각 교재에서 다루는 문화 유형을 교재 분석을 통해 알아보고, 현행 문화 교재의 문제점을 지적하였다. 그리고 역사문화 교재의 개념과 기능, 교재 구성의 원리를 찾아본 뒤, 이를 바탕으로 본고의 이론적 배경이 되는 교재의 개념과 기능, 교재 구성의 원리를 살펴본 뒤, 역사문화 교재 개발이 갖는 의의를 살펴보았다.
3장에서는 선행연구의 문화 교육의 범주와 내용을 바탕으로 본 연구에서 새롭게 문화유형을 설정하였고, 역사문화 교재의 교육 내용을 선정하기 위하여 기존의 한국 문화 교재의 역사문화 내용을 검토․분석하여 중․고급 한국어 학습자에게 필요한 역사문화 내용을 선정하였다.
4장에서는 3장의 논의를 바탕으로 역사문화를 중심으로 한 교재의 목표, 내용 및 형식 구성방안을 고려하여, 중․고급 학습자를 대상으로 역사문화를 중심으로 한 한국 문화 교재의 단원 구성 모형을 제시해 보고 단원 구성의 실제도 제안해 보았다.
5장에서는 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 역사문화를 중심으로 한 한국 문화 교재 개발 방안 연구를 종합․정리하고 앞으로 한국 문화 교육에서 역사문화 교육이 어떤 방식으로 나아가야 하는지 그 방향을 제시해 보았다.
