거절 화행은 대화 상대방의 의사를 수용하지 않는다는 점에서 부담이 매우 큰 화행 중의 하나이다. 거절의 부담을 줄이기 위해 일반적인 대화 상황에서는 간접적인 전략과 완화된 언어적 표현이 자주 실현된다. 한국어 학습자가 이러한 전략과 표현을 이해하고 사용하지 못한다면 그만큼 화용적 실패를 경험할 가능성이 커진다. 따라서 본고에서는 거절 전략의 세부 유형과 이를 실현하는 언어적 표현을 제시한다. 이를 위해 드라마에서 실현된 거절 화행을 추출하여 주요 전략과 언어적 표현을 분석하였다.
거절 화행은 나이, 사회적 지위, 친밀감의 차이 등 담화 상황적 변인에 따라 실현 양상이 달라진다. 이를 분석하기 위해 담화완성형 설문지를 제작하여 모국어 화자들을 대상으로 거절 전략을 조사하였다. 변인에 따라 거절의 전략이 어떻게 다르게 나타나는지를 분석함으로써 거절 화행의 변인과 실현 양상의 관계를 살펴보았다.
다음으로 드라마와 설문지 자료에서 분석된 결과를 바탕으로 한국어 교재에 나타난 거절 화행의 문제점 및 개선 방안을 제시한다. 한국어 교재가 다양한 전략과 언어적 표현을 제시하고 있는지, 거절 화행 실현에 영향을 주는 사회적 변인을 적절하게 반영하고 있는지, 거절 화행을 어떻게 제시하고 연습하도록 유도하는지를 중점적으로 살펴보고 문제점과 개선 방안을 제시하였다.
마지막으로 본고에서는 거절 화행의 교수학습 원리와 구체적인 방안을 제시한다. 제2언어 화행 교수학습의 방법론과 한국어 교재 분석에 제시한 개선 방안을 바탕으로 실험 수업을 설계하였다. 본고에서 제시하는 실험 수업은 명시적인 방법으로 거절의 변인과 전략, 언어적 표현 간의 관계를 학습자 스스로 파악하고 인지할 수 있도록 유도하는 방안으로 이루어져 있다. 실제로 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 실험 수업을 진행하여 그 결과를 제시하였는데 첫째 학습자가 사용한 거절의 전략이 보다 다양해졌다는 점, 둘째 언어적 표현이 다양해졌다는 점, 셋째 학습자가 거절 화행의 변인에 보다 민감하게 반응하였다는 점에서 실험 수업에 이용된 교수학습 방안의 효과를 확인하였다. 또한 실험 수업의 교수학습 활동을 관찰한 결과를 바탕으로 거절 화행의 교수학습은 거절의 변인과 언어적 표현의 관계에 보다 집중할 필요가 있다는 점을 제안하였다.
본 연구는 실험 수업을 통해서 거절 화행 교수학습 방안의 효과를 실제적으로 검증하였다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 앞으로 한국어 교수학습 연구 분야에서 화행 교수학습 방법론에 대한 경험적인 연구가 축적되어 가는 데 본 연구가 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

This study describes the aspects of refusal speech act in Korean. And it points out the problems in the Korean textbooks and presents the remedies based on the characteristics of Korean refusals. Finally, it discusses the teaching methods of Korean refusal speech acts by analyzing the effectiveness of the experimental instruction.
The refusals are face-threatening speech acts in a sense that they convey the meaning of not accepting the hearer’s suggestions and requests. So, they are realized as indirect strategies in the alleviative language expression. This study presents refusal strategies and expressions by analyzing the realization of refusal speech acts in Korean soap operas. Korean natives were conducted to investigate how they use strategies differently according to situational variations such as age, social status and intimacy.
This study analyzes the realizations of refusals in Korean textbooks. It is dealt with whether they present the proper refusal strategies and expressions, whether they reflect situational variations, how effectively they present Korean refusal speech acts and how properly they let learners practice them.
Finally, this study presents teaching methods of refusal speech acts. This study designs the experimental instruction. In the class, the instructor presents learners the relation between refusal expressions and situational variations with explicit methods. By practicing an actual instruction, the effectiveness of this teaching method is confirmed: 1) learner’s refusal strategies and expressions became more various, 2) learners could respond to situational variations more sensitively. Observing the class activities, it is suggested that we need to focus more on the relation between refusal expressions and situational variations.
