In this thesis, we compared English vowels with Korean ones in terms of formant frequencies. This was to identify each position of the vowels in the coordinates representing the space in the oral cavity. It has been known that the first formant frequency (F1) is related to the tongue height, whereas the second formant frequency (F2) informs the tongue backness. Plotting the data points consisting of (F1, F2), obtained from the various previous studies of English vowels and the vowels of Korean regional dialects in two dimensional space. This is where the vertical axis represents F1 or tongue height, and the horizontal axis corresponds to F2 or tongue backness, shows which English vowel is articulatorily close to which Korean vowel, or vice versa. In doing so, we used Bark scale to show perceptually equal intervals of pitch as equal distances along the scale. Graphical representation of vowels of Seoul and Kyungsang dialects on the same formant chart reveals that the speakers of Seoul dialect move the articulators more drastically than those of Kyungsang dialect. On the other hand, comparing Korean vowels of Seoul dialect with English vowels, Korean /어/ is articulatorily similar to English /ʌ/. While the vowels of Kyungsang dialect, /에(애), 어, 이/ are plotted similar to English /ɛ, ʌ, ɪ/ on the formant chart, respectively. Contrary to the previous studies, /이/ the Kyungsang dialect is considered as lax vowel /ɪ/ rather than tense vowel /i/ in English. From these results, different approaches should be made to the speakers of different dialects when teaching pronunciation of English vowels. This is because some English vowels are more difficult for the speakers of one variety of dialects to learn than for the speakers of other variety of dialects. It will be desirable to have a different method for teaching pronunciations of English vowels, depending on the learner's dialect of his/her mother tongue.
