본 연구는 한국어 학습자가 의성어·의태어를 체계적이고 효과적으로 학습할 수 있는 방법을 모색해 보는 데에 목적이 있다.
사람은 관계를 가지며 산다. 언어를 사용해 관계를 맺고, 정보를 주고 받으며 살아간다. 그러나 우리는 정보만을 주고 받으며 살아가지 않는다. 자신의 감정과 정서를 다른 사람과 교류하고자 노력한다. 이러한 감정이나 정서를 표현할 때 좀더 정확하고 섬세하게 표현해 주는 것이 의성어·의태어이다. 이 연구는 이러한 의성어·의태어의 효과적인 교육의 필요성을 인식하는 데에서 출발하였다. 크게 세 부분으로 나누어 논의하였다.
2장에서는 의성어와 의태어의 공통적인 특징과 차이점 그리고 의성어·의태어가 어떠한 기준을 통해 하위 구분되고 있는지 살펴 보았다.
3장에서는 한국어 교재와 한국어능력시험에서의 의성어·의태어의 현황을 알아보았다. 또한, 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 한 설문을 통해 의성어·의태어의 인지, 사용 현황, 학습에 관한 인식 등에 관해 살펴 그 결과를 중심으로 한국어 학습자를 위한 한국어 학습에서의 유의미한 의성어·의태어 목록을 선정하고 효과적인 교육 방안의 고안을 위해 의성어·의태어 목록을 무엇을 표현하는가를 기준으로 하여 하위 구분하였다.
4장에서는 한국어 교육에서 의성어·의태어의 효과적인 교육 방안을 살펴보았다. 구체적인 방법으로 의성어·의태어의 특징에 따른 교육 방안과 실제 자료를 통한 교육 방안으로 크게 두 가지로 살펴보았으며, 의성어·의태어가 무엇을 표현하는가에 따른 분류와 형태 변화에 따른 교육방안도 살펴보았다. 또한 이러한 교육 방안이 실제 수업에서 어떻게 나타날 수 있는지 실제 수업 방안을 제시하였다.

The purpose of this research is to develop on effective and systematic method to teach onomatopoeia and mimetic words to Korean students. People use language not only to share information with others, but also to express feelings and emotions. These emotions and feelings can be expressed in a more perfect and detailed way by using onomatopoeia and mimetic words. The relevance of this research should be recognized by educators, and that is the objective of this project. This research is discussed into three chapters.
In chapter two, we engage in a study of the common characteristics and differences of onomatopoeia and mimetic words and how we choose and employ them.
In chapter three, I tried to study the use of the onnomatopoeia and mimetic words in Korean textbooks, TOPIK (test of proficiency in Korean), and also through posing questions concerning the cognitive abilities of Korean students when it came to choosing onomatopoeia and mimetic words. Lists of these words and expressions are presented for further study.
In chapter four, I attempt to find a scheme for making effective use of onomatopoeia and mimetic words in Korean education. The objective would be to develop an educational method of studying the characteristics of onomatopoeia and mimetic words, and to develop practical materials to support this activity. Our objective is to study the best way to express oneself while using these kinds of words, and the morphogenesis of these words in the context of changing tenses and other grammatical situations. I suggested that these educational schemes can be useful and effective in the classroom.
