본 연구의 목적은 최근 사회적인 변화에 발맞추어 활발하게 생성되고 있는 신조어들 가운데 영어 외래어를 중심으로 단어 형성 조어법의 관점에서 분석해 보는 것이다. 특히 영어 외래어가 어떠한 형태로 변화되었는지를 연구해 봄으로써 원래 영어단어와 한국어에 차용된 이후 변형된 영어 외래어의 차이를 조어법의 관점에서 분석해 본다.
영어 외래어의 조어방식에 따른 경향을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째로, 가장 많이 차용된 영어 단어의 품사는 대부분 명사였다. 형용사나 동사가 우리말에 차용되더라도 접미사 ‘-하다’ 와의 결합을 필요로 하여 통사적 범주가 명사로 바뀌게 된다. 둘째로, 영어 외래어를 살펴보았을 때 합성이 가장 활발한 조어방식으로 나타났으며, 합성의 어종도 다양화되는 경향을 보였다. 일반적으로 조어방식에 따르면 파생이 가장 활발한 것으로 알려져 있었지만, 영어 외래어의 경우에는 합성이 가장 높은 비율을 보이는 것이다. 셋째로, 영어 단어 그대로의 형태나 의미로 유입되는 경우도 있지만, 우리말의 음절 단위로 나뉘어 새로운 형태소가 형성되는 특징과 차용된 이후 우리말 어휘들과의 결합이 이루어지면서 새로운 의미를 가지는 현상이 두드러지게 나타났다. 마지막으로, 최근에는 새로운 어휘가 차용될 때 간편하고 짧게 하려는 단축 현상이 빈번하게 일어난다. 이것은 영어 단어 차용과정에서 그 기본형의 중심 부위만 차용되며 나머지 형태들은 빈번이 탈락되는 현상이다.

The purpose of this thesis is to study the English loan words in Korean in terms of the word-formation method. English loan words are also formed by the word-coining methods like derivation, blending, compounding, clipping, and acronym creation. But they frequently show the unique forms which do not exist in English for the various reasons. For one thing, not a few loan words are imported directly or indirectly through Japanese. These Japanese-based English loan words are distorted in forms or in meanings in many cases before coming into Korean. On the other hand, English loan words undergo the semantic generalization or specialization or the transfer of meaning after they are imported into Korean. This also creates the gap between the original English word and the corresponding loan words in Korean.
A few characteristics of the English loan words in terms of the word-formation method can be observed. The most common word-formation method used in English loan words is compounding. Compounds are made up by joining more than two roots or independent words. Most compounds are composed of a noun plus a noun, or a noun plus other part of speech. However, recently coined neologisms also use a few highly productive affixes which tend to be added to the specific root of words to make various kinds of derivatives. And the derivatives by suffixation have the higher productivity than prefixation. The most frequently used suffix is -하다. Clipped forms and acronyms are lively created, too, since these methods make shorter and more economical expressions for the effective communication.
