A study was aimed to suggest a teaching methodology to improve the Korean language learner’s communicative competence through radio programs which are considered helpful for intermediate and advanced Korean learners.
The purpose of communicative language teaching methodology is for a fluent language use and communication. For good communication, listening and speaking abilities should be improved. Above all, speaking ability will not be improved without good listening ability. Therefore, this study was aimed to improve the learners’ speaking ability as well as listening ability and suggest a teaching methodology for Korean communication through the media of radio.
Radio covers various topics and arouses learners’ interest. Especially, as common daily lives are covered many times, it is possible to know more about Korean everyday lives. The function to repeat listening is considered a positive benefit as an educational media when learners can understand what they listen one time. Besides, learners can concentrate only on listening without visual images. Radio program can be used as a media to improve listening and speaking abilities at the same time through speaking activity based on the program.
In the chapter 1, the purpose and necessity of communicative competence education was revealed and the method of this study was suggested. Comparing with the importance of listening in Korean education, there are insufficient amount of research on using radio media. Aside from the Korean language education, previous references using radio media were reviewed in the fields of foreign language and Korean education.
In the chapter 2, the concept and kinds of media including radio were examined as well as the audio-lingual methodology, a theoretical background of media using teaching, communicative competence teaching methodology, and the significance of media using teaching.
In the chapter 3, it was searched what importance radio programs have in the Korean language education. Components and characteristics of Radio language and kinds of programs were enumerated. Chapter 3 suggested selection requirements and precautions when programs are selected for actual classes.
In the chapter 4, designing principles and practice were suggested of communicative teaching methodology of using radio media targeting intermediate and advanced Korean learners. After selecting radio program based on selection requirements suggested in the chapter 3, a practical teaching plan was suggested. The instruction model was verified through actual classes and the education effect was analyzed.
Finally in the chapter 5, the discussions of previous chapters were summarized and concluded, and the limitation of this study and the supplement points were suggested.
This study has a significant importance to suggest a communicative teaching methodology using educational media of radio program which has not been discussed in earnest yet.

본 연구는 라디오 방송 프로그램이 중급, 고급 한국어 학습자들의 의사소통 능력 향상에 도움이 되는 매체라 생각하여 라디오 프로그램을 활용하여 한국어 학습자들의 의사소통 능력을 향상시킬 교육 방안을 제시하는데 목적이 있다.
의사소통 중심 교수법은 유창한 언어 사용과 원활한 의사소통을 목표로 하고 있으며, 원활한 의사소통을 위해서는 듣기와 말하기의 능력을 향상시켜야 한다. 그중에서도 듣기가 제대로 진행되지 않으면 말하기를 제대로 할 수 없다. 그렇기 때문에 본 연구에서는 학습자의 듣기 능력과 더불어 말하기 능력을 함께 향상시키는데 목적을 두고, 라디오라는 매개체를 활용하여 한국어 의사소통 교육 방안을 제안하고자 하였다.
라디오는 다루고 있는 주제가 다양하여 학습자들의 흥미 유발을 할 수 있다. 특히, 사람들의 일상생활을 많이 다루고 있어 한국의 일상생활에 대해 알 수 있다. 그리고 이전과는 달리 다시 듣기를 통해 학습자들이 이해하지 못한 부분에 대해서 반복적인 청취가 가능하다는 점 또한 학습 매체로써 긍정적인 면이 있다고 보았다. 또, 시각적인 자료가 제공되지 않아, 학습자가 듣기에만 집중할 수 있으며, 이를 바탕으로 말하기 활동을 통해 듣기와 말하기 능력을 동시에 향상시킬 수 있는 매체라 판단하여 라디오 프로그램을 활용하고자 하였다.
1장에서는 라디오를 활용한 의사소통 교육의 목적과 필요성을 밝히고 연구 방법에 대해 제시하였다. 한국어 교육에서 듣기의 중요성이 강조되고 있는 것에 비해 라디오 매체를 활용한 연구가 미비하여, 한국어 교육 외에 외국어교육과 국어교육에서의 라디오 매체를 활용한 선행연구들을 검토하였다.
2장에서는 라디오를 포함한 매체의 개념과 종류에 대해서 알아보고, 매체를 활용한 수업의 이론적 배경이 되는 청각구두식 교수법과 의사소통 중심 교수법, 그리고 매체 활용 수업의 의의에 대해서 살펴보았다.
3장에서는 라디오 프로그램이 한국어 교육에서 갖는 교육적 가치가 무엇인가를 살펴보고, 라디오 언어의 구성과 특징 그리고 라디오 프로그램의 종류를 알아보았다. 그리고 실제 수업에서 어떤 프로그램을 선정해야 하는지에 대한 선정요건 및 유의점에 대해서 제시하였다.
4장에서는 중급 한국어 학습자와 고급 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 한 라디오 프로그램을 활용한 의사소통 교육 방안의 설계 원리와 실제를 제안하였다. 3장에서 제시한 선정요건을 토대로 실제 라디오 프로그램을 선정한 후, 라디오 프로그램을 활용한 의사소통 교육 방안의 실제 학습지도안을 제시하였다. 그리고 실제 수업을 통해 수업 모형을 실증하고, 학습자 인식 조사를 바탕으로 학습 효과를 분석하였다.
마지막으로 5장에서는 지금까지 논의된 연구의 내용을 요약·정리하고 연구의 한계점 및 보완해야 할 점에 대해 제시하고자 한다.
본 연구는 한국어 교육 분야에서는 아직 본격적으로 다뤄지지 않은 교육 매체인 라디오 프로그램을 활용한 의사소통 교육 방안을 제안했다는 데 의의가 있다.
