제 목 : 캐나다 이민자를 대상으로 한 영어 말하기 학습전략에
대한 고찰
본 연구는 글로벌 환경에서 영어로 말하기 위한 효과적인 학습 전략의 필요성을 인식하여 영어를 모국어로 사용하는 나라인 캐나다 이민자들과 국내의 토익 고득점자를 대상으로 학습전략 사용 실태를 파악하고 외국어 학습을 하는 학습자들에게 효과적인 학습전략 및 학습방법을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
본 연구에서는 캐나다 이민자 중 토론토와 밴쿠버에 거주 중인 한국인 90명을 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 연구 도구로써 이민자들의 영어에 대한 전반적인 질문으로 구성된 설문지와 Oxford(1990)의 SILL(Strategy Inventory for Language Learning)의 검사도구 중 말하기 기능만을 추려내 사용하였다. 또한 국내 대기업에 재직중인 토익 고득점자 3명의 심층 인터뷰를 병행하여 학습전략 및 학습방법에 대한 신뢰도를 뒷받침하고자 했으며 이에 대한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 본 연구에 참여한 캐나다 이민자들은 이민 전에는 영어로 말하는데 어
려움을 느끼고 있었던 반면 이민 후에는 어려움이 다소 해소 된 것으로 나타났다.
이민 후, 영어 말하기에 대한 어려움이 다소 해소 되었지만 대상자 일부는 이
민 전·후 영어로 말하는데 ‘발음 및 억양’에 대해 어려움을 겪고 있는 것으로
나타났다. 또한 이민 전에는 듣기에 대해 15.6%만이 어려움이 있다고 응답한 반
면 이민 후에는 25.6%가 듣기에 어려움을 느끼고 있다고 응답 하였다. 이는 유창
하게 말하기 위해서는 듣기가 가능해야 한다는 선행연구들의 가설을 뒷받침 하고
있음을 시사 한다.
둘째, 본 연구에 참여한 캐나다 이민자들은 이민 전 영어말하기 능력향상의
가장 좋은 학습방법으로 ‘영어환경에의 노출’을 선택하였다. 또한 이민 후에도
이민자들 중 60명(66.7%)이 영어환경에의 노출이 영어 말하기 능력을 향상시켰다
고 응답함으로써 영어환경의 중요성을 재 확인 할 수 있었다.

셋째, 본 연구에 참여한 캐나다 이민자들은 영어로 대화 중 적당한 단어가 떠오르지 않으면 같은 뜻을 나타내는 단어나 손짓, 발짓을 이용해 뜻을 전달하려고 노력하는 등의 보상전략(compensation strategies)과 자주 쓰이는 유용한 영어표현과 패턴들을 익히려고 노력하는 등의 인지전략(cognitive strategies)을 많이 사용하고 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 반면 사회적 전략(social strategies)과 초인지 전략(metacognitive strategies)은 상대적으로 낮게 나타났는데 이는 이민사회 내에서 영어 보다는 모국어인 한국어로 대화하고 있음을 나타내는 결과라 하겠다.
넷째, 본 연구의 인터뷰에 참여한 국내의 토익 고득점자 3명은 900점 이상의 공인인증 점수를 가지고 있으나 토익이 영어말하기에 도움이 되지 않는다고 응답했다. 또한 영어로 유창하게 말하기 위해서는 다소 강압적인 학습방법이 필요하다고 응답했으며 영어 말하기 실력을 향상시키기 위한 가장 효과적인 방법으로 영어환경에의 노출을 꼽았다.
본 연구의 설문조사와 인터뷰를 통해 영어 말하기의 효과적인 학습전략은 영어로 말하고 영어로 듣는 환경이 선행되어야 하며 대화도중 적당한 단어나 표현이 떠오르지 않더라도 한국어를 절대 사용하지 못하도록 하는 다소 강압적인 학습방법이 도움이 될 수 있다고 학습자들이 인지하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

Study on English Speaking Strategies Of Korean immigrants in Canada.
This study targets Canadian immigrants using English as a first language and TOEIC high scorers in Korea. This study intends to grasp how effective the strategies that the immigrants and the TOEIC scorers used. Furthermore, the purpose of this is suggesting effective study strategies and know-hows to English learners in EFL environment.
The survey was conducted to ninety Koreans living in Toronto and Vancouver among Korean immigrants living in Canada. The study also includes in-depth interviews with three TOEIC high scorers in Korea working for large corporations. The result of the surveys and interviews can be analyzed based on the following four conditions.
Firstly, Canadian-Korean immigrants participating in this study faced difficulty in speaking English before immigration. The immigrants listed the pronunciation and accent as the most challenging parts in mastering English speaking. Furthermore, 25.6 percent of the immigrants answered that they faced difficulty in English listening after the immigration.
Secondly, Canadian immigrants participating in this study chose ‘exposure to English-speaking environment’as the best study method for improving English-speaking ability before the immigration.
Thirdly, the analysis of questionnaire by the Canadian immigrants shows that the immigrants, if cannot think out proper words to express their ideas or opinions while they are talking in English, the immigrants use compensation strategies, such as other words, body languages that express the same meaning to convey their ideas or opinions.
Finally, three TOEIC high scorers in Korea participating in this study answered that they need somewhat forceful study methods to master English speaking, and answered that exposure to English speaking environments is the most effective method to improve their oral proficiency.
Through the surveys and interviews, this study reached the conclusion that providing environments for English speaking and listening is the most effective method in studying English for Korean-Canadian immigrants who want to improve their English speaking ability. This study also concludes that somewhat forceful learning methods is sometimes necessary for the immigrants to improve their oral proficiency, such as never allowing the immigrants to use Korean in their every day life conversation, even if the immigrants cannot figure out proper English words or expressions.
