본 연구의 목적은 여성결혼이민자들의 담화능력을 향상시키기 위한 방법으로 ‘좀’의 의미와 기능을 밝히고 실생활에서 효과적으로 사용할 수 있는 ‘좀’의 교육 방법을 제시하기 위한 목적으로 시도되었다.
‘좀’의 의미는 화자의 의도나 담화 상황. 용언 등을 기준으로 해서 그것보다 ① ‘작아지거나 적어지는 의미’와 ② ‘커지거나 많아지는 의미’로 구분된다.
‘좀’의 기능은 ‘명령, 요청, 제안, 설명, 책망, 제공, 지정, 놀리기’ 등으로 구분된다. 이 중 ‘요청, 제안, 설명, 제공’ 등에서는 청자에 대한 ‘공손, 겸손, 배려, 격식’ 등의 의미가 내포되어 있으며, ‘명령, 책망, 놀리기’ 등에서는 반대의 의미를 지닌다.
또한 국립국어원 현대 구어 말뭉치와 문어 말뭉치에서 ‘좀’의 사용 양상을 분석해 본 결과 ‘구어 말뭉치’에서는 ‘좀’의 의미 중 ②의 비율이 높았으며 ‘문어 말뭉치’에서는 ①의 비율이 높게 나타났다. 또한 ‘구어와 문어 말뭉치’에서 ‘좀’의 기능을 분석해 본 결과 모두에서 ‘요청과 책망’ 기능이 우위를 차지했다.
그러나 ‘여성결혼이민자와 함께하는 한국어 교재’에서는 ‘요청과 설명’ 기능이 우위를 차지했으며 ‘책망’ 기능은 아주 낮은 빈도를 보였다. 본 연구에서는 그 이유를 교육적인 측면을 고려한 교재의 특수성에 기인한 결과로 보았다.
마지막으로 인터뷰를 통해 ‘여성결혼이민자들’의 ‘좀’의 사용 양상을 살펴보고 그에 따른 오류를 분석해 보았다. 그리고 그 결과를 참고하여 ‘빈도’가 높게 나타났던 ‘요청’ 기능을 중심으로 ‘여성결혼이민자들’에게 지도할 ‘좀’의 ‘교육 방법’을 제시해 보았다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning and function of Korean word 'chom' as a way to improve the communication ability of female marriage immigrants, and to propose an education method in which 'chom' can be effectively used by the immigrants everyday life.
On the basis of a talker's intention, communication circumstance and a declinable word, the meaning of ‘chom’ can be divided into ① ‘the meaning of growing smaller or fewer’ and ② ‘the meaning of growing larger or more'.
The function of ‘chom’ is dividend into 'imperative, request, proposal, explanation, offering, blame, designation, and derision', among which 'request, proposal, explanation, and offering' imply the meaning of 'politeness, humility, consideration, and formality' to listeners, and 'imperative, blame, and derision' imply the opposite meaning.
In addition, the results of analysis on the use of 'chom' from contemporary colloquial language corpus and literary language corpus defined by National Institute of the Korean Language presented that regarding the meaning of 'chom', ② 'the meaning of growing larger or more' was found more in 'colloquial language corpus', whereas ① 'the meaning of growing smaller or fewer' was found more in 'literary language corpus'. The results of analysis on the function of 'chom' from the 'colloquial and literary language corpus' indicated that 'request and blame' functions took precedence over other functions in both corpus. But, in the 'Korean Text for Female Marriage Immigrants', 'request and explanation' functions held priority to other functions, 'blame' function had the lowest frequency. That seemed to be attributable to the special feature of the textbook taking into account educational aspects.
Moreover, to investigate the use of 'chom' by 'female marriage immigrants' and analyze relevant errors, this researcher interviewed female marriage immigrants. With reference to the result, this study proposed a method to educate 'female marriage immigrants' about 'chom', focusing on 'request' function whose 'frequency' turned out to be high.
