The objective of the research is to enhance reading ability of intermediate-level Korean language students and to convey cultural knowledge to them. To this end, the research suggests culture-oriented reading sessions by preparing reading list of suitable classic fairy tales that contain cultural elements and by reorganizing teaching materials in consideration of learners' language ability.
Currently, Korean language training focuses on improving communication ability, and related research addresses specific and detailed issues in regard to four functions of language: listening, speaking, reading and writing. As of April 2009, concerning research on reading Korean language, 48 academic theses and 28 articles in domestic journals were searched in National Assembly Library database. Previous research on reading has emphasized development of textbook and instruction method, while more recent studies provide specific guideline to utilize reading material and instruction method to stimulate students' interest and resolution.
Unlike other functions, reading has established textbooks that are ready to be distributed to students. Therefore, it is easier to provide richer information to students, which explains the continued advancement of research in the field.
As of April 2009, research on culture produced 54 academic theses and 44 articles for academic journals based on National Assembly Library database. Research on cultural aspect of Korean language shifted its focus from cultural contents in textbook and necessary contents for understanding of Korean culture, gradually to proverbs, film, news, pansori, Korean drama, novel and mythology.
Utilization of classic fairy tale that the research discusses has benefit of easy accessibility to students. Fairy tales contain cultural elements in terms of time and space, and facilitates learners' reading ability and understanding of Korean culture. Thus, using fairy tale as material for language textbook is deemed appropriate, which provided a foundation for the research.
In addition to improving students' reading ability, the research aims to deliver cultural understanding as well. The research examines foreign fairy tales as well as Korean ones as many fairy tales have unknown source of ambiguous origin.
Popular fairy tales were included in the list, including foreign ones with corresponding themes and plots. The research first examines current condition of language classes on reading and cultural understanding, and demonstrates definition and educational value of fairy tale. The research explains criteria in selecting fairy tales appropriate for Korean language training, and produces a list of fairy tales appropriate for education in terms of popularity, frequency of use and cultural background. The list was prepared based on analysis result of applicability of current Korean textbooks, analysis of elementary school Korean language textbook and previous research s and books. With the list in hand, the research suggests to reorganize class material to cater to students' language ability. Examples are provided for close examination, and educational targets are established for actual class. The research examines how to make use of the new material through examples, and provides actual guideline for instruction method.
The research confirms, along with similar studies on classical literature, fable, myth, novel and poem, that textbook for reading should be given more attention, and that reading textbooks that contain cultural elements are highly applicable to the class. The research suggests a list of fairy tales as reading materials for intermediate-level students, and provides instruction method to achieve both enhanced reading ability and better understanding of culture. The research explores effective interaction between language training and cultural education.

본 논문은 중급 학습자의 읽기 능력을 향상과 문화적 지식을 전달하는 데에 목표를 두고 있다. 이를 위해 문화적 요소를 내포한 읽기 텍스트로 적합한 전래동화를 활용성 제안 및 읽기 수업을 위한 목록 작성과 학습자 언어 능력을 고려한 재구성 방안을 거쳐 문화 중심의 읽기 수업안을 제안한다.
현재 한국어 교육은 의사소통 능력 향상을 목표로 진행하고 있으며 한국어 교육의 연구는 점차 듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기와 같은 언어의 4가지 기능에 대해서 세부적이며 구체적으로 이루어지고 있다. 읽기에 대한 연구는 2009년 4월 기준으로 보았을 때 국회 도서관에서 학위 논문 48건, 국내 학술지 28건으로 검색되고 있다. 종전의 읽기에 대한 연구가 교재 개발과 교육 방안에 집중되어 왔다면 현재 읽기 연구 방향은 학습자의 학습 의욕과 흥미를 위해 보다 세부적 읽기 텍스트의 활용과 종류, 아울러 그 활용 교육 방안까지 진행되고 있다.
읽기 텍스트는 듣기, 말하기, 쓰기와 다르게 이미 학습자에게 제공되어 질 수 있는 형태로써 존재한다. 그래서 다른 기능에 비해 학습자에게 더 다양한 정보를 제공할 수 있기 때문에 읽기 텍스트에 대한 세부적인 연구는 점차 더 발전되고 있다.
한편 문화에 관한 연구 역시 국회 도서관에서 2009년 4월을 기준으로 학위 논문 54건, 학술지 44건으로 검색되고 있다. 문화에 대해 연구되어 온 방향을 살펴보면 그 시작은 한국어 교재 속 문화 내용과 한국 문화 교육에 필요한 내용 연구에서 점차 적으로 속담, 영화, 신문, 판소리, 드라마, 소설, 신화와 같은 매체를 통한 문화교육을 주장하는 연구로 발전되어 왔다.
본 논문에서 논의되고 있는 전래동화의 활용은 학습자에 대한 접근이 용이하다는 이점을 지니고 있다. 전래동화는 시대적 공간적으로 문화요소를 포함하고 있기 때문에 학습자의 읽기 능력 향상 및 한국 문화의 이해에 도움이 된다. 그러므로 전래동화가 한국어 읽기 교육을 위한 텍스트로서 적합하다고 판단하여 본 연구를 진행하였다.
본 연구는 읽기 능력 향상을 목표로 하며 더불어 학습자에게 문화적 요소 또한 전달하고자 한다. 본 연구에서 의미하는 전래동화는 국내 전래동화를 비롯한 국외 전래동화까지 포함한다. 그 이유는 유래를 알 수 없는 전래동화가 많아서 그 국적을 확인할 수 없는 것들이 많기 때문이다.
연구 결과로서 선정된 전래동화 목록은 누구나 알 수 있는 대중적 전래동화를 바탕으로 선정하였고 아울러 동일한 주제와 내용을 고려한 국외 전래동화까지 포함한다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 읽기와 문화 수업에 대해서 살펴보고 전래동화를 활용하기 위해 그 정의와 교육적 가치에 대해서 알아본다. 이어서 한국어 교육에 적합한 전래동화 선정 요건에 대해 제안하고 그것을 바탕으로 보편성과 대중성, 빈도, 문화적 배경 등으로 교육에 적합성이 높은 목록을 제안하였다. 이 목록은 현재 교육되고 있는 한국어 교재를 영역별 활용성을 바탕으로 모색한 분석 결과와 초등학교 국어 교과서의 분석, 그리고 지금까지 진행되어 온 여러 논문과 저서를 통하여 작성하였다. 제안된 목록을 바탕으로 읽기 수업에 들어가기 전 학습자의 언어 능력에 맞게 재구성 방안을 제안하였다. 재구성에 대해 예를 통해서 자세히 살펴 본 후 실제 수업을 위해 목표를 세우고 그 활용 방안에 대해서 예를 들어 자세히 살펴보고 실제 수업안을 제시하고 있다.
본 논문은 읽기 텍스트에 관한 기존의 고전문학, 설화, 희곡, 신화, 소설, 시 등의 형식과 유사한 연구와 더불어 이러한 읽기 텍스트 영역이 도외시 되어서는 안 된다는 점과 문화적 요소가 포함된 읽기 텍스트의 수업 활용성이 높다는 점을 확인 하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 중급 학습자의 읽기를 위한 전래동화 목록을 제안하고 그것을 활용한 읽기 능력 향상과 더불어 문화 교육 방안까지 도모할 수 있는 수업 방안을 제시하면서 언어 기능 수업과 더불어 문화 수업의 절충 방안을 모색하고 있는 것에 의의를 두고 있다.
