This study has an intention of presenting validity of using news, construction of contents and the practical use of news for teaching Korean culture for advanced-level Korean language learners.
Nowadays, importance of culture education in Korean as a Foreign Language is getting emphasized for effective communication as learning objective varies. Therefore Korean as a Foreign Language has a lively argument. However, until now these discussions are all about teaching contents, not good enough about teaching materials and methods of culture education.
In special measure, although advanced-level Korean language learners have sufficient linguistic abilities to communicate, they cannot fully understand all kinds of cultural elements. So, these points place limits on better communication.
Although these limits are widely known, materials for teaching Korean culture have not been developed in diverse for advanced-level Korean language learners, so both Korean-teaching institute and learners are in a difficult situation. So, this study has an intention of presenting news as materials for teaching Korean culture for advanced-level Korean language learners to communicate effectively. First of all, this study shows validity of using news as good material for teaching Korean culture as I said above. Second, this also indicates a syllabus to present how to use items which are well brought out in a news. This all works are coming along the following process.
In the chapter 1, I present why teaching Korean culture is urgently needed in Korean as a Foreign Language and what is the purpose of teaching Korean culture in Korean as a Foreign Language for advanced-level Korean language learners. In addition, I consider preceding studies deeper and present how to progress and what to do in this study.
In the chapter 2, firstly, I take objectives into consideration for choosing proper items and also take necessity of teaching Korean culture into consideration. After that, choosing proper items and contents in teaching Korean culture is accomplished. On the basis of this, I also present what points should be considered when Korean teachers choose items in teaching Korean culture for advanced-level Korean language learners. Additionally, as presenting news as a materials for teaching Korean culture for advanced-level Korean language learners, I show news's merits as a materials for teaching Korean culture, how news should be used and what contents are good for teaching Korean culture.
In the chapter 3, comparing items and subject matters of news articles with what I said above in the chapter 2, I choose proper contents in the news which are good for teaching Korean culture. Going one step forward, I present proper items in the concrete. Moreover, I indicate both subject matter-centered teaching methods and project class teaching and give both ways as effective ways of teaching Korean culture. Finally, I arrange and improve tasks and activities which could be used in the class on the basis of news's composition, all kinds of news articles and news-making process.
In the chapter 4, after considering all the factors in the chapter 3, I present a syllabus which is putting learning objectives for advanced-level Korean language learners, subject matter-centered teaching methods and project class teaching together.
In the chapter 5, after summarizing and putting together all discussions above, I also point out the limits of this study and encouraged courses in this field.
From now on, I expect that effective teaching methods and various teaching materials would be developed and educational standards and items would be set up for teaching Korean culture for advanced-level Korean language learners.

본 연구는 한국어 고급단계 학습자를 대상으로 하는 한국어문화교육에 있어서 신문 활용에 대한 타당성과 내용 구성, 그리고 그 방법을 제시하는 것을 주목적으로 하고 있다.
최근 한국어교육에 있어 학습자의 학습 목적이 다양화 되면서 효과적인 의사소통을 위한 문화교육에 대한 중요성이 더불어 강조되고 있다. 이에 외국어로서의 한국어교육에서도 많은 논의들이 있어왔지만 지금까지는 문화교육 내용 구성론이 중심이 되었고 문화교육 자료 개발론과 문화교육 방법론에 대한 논의는 아직 부족한 상태이다. 특히 고급단계의 학습자는 일상생활에서의 의사소통을 위한 문화적 요소의 습득에만 그치지 않고 더 전문적인 영역의 의사소통을 위한 수준 높은 사회 문화적 요소들을 익혀야 한다. 이러한 요구에도 아직까지 고급단계 학습자를 대상으로 하는 한국어문화교육 자료들이 다양하게 개발되어 있지 않아 한국어교육기관이나 학습자 개인적 학습에 있어서도 많은 어려움이 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 고급단계 학습자의 효과적인 의사소통을 위하여 문화교육 자료로서 신문을 제시하고자 하였다. 먼저 한국어문화교육 자료로서 신문의 타당성을 밝히고, 신문에 나타난 문화교육 항목을 선정하여 그 항목을 활용하는 방법으로서의 교수요목을 제시하였다. 이러한 연구는 다음과 같은 절차로 진행하였다.
1장에서는 고급단계 학습자를 대상으로 한국어문화교육을 위한 내용 연구의 필요성과 목적을 밝히고 한국어교육에서의 문화교육과 신문 활용에 대한 선행연구를 고찰하였으며 연구의 내용과 방법을 제시하였다.
2장에서는 한국어교육에 있어 문화교육의 필요성과 그 문화 항목들을 선택할 때 고려해야하는 목표를 돌아보아 한국어문화교육에서 활용할 수 있는 문화 항목과 내용을 선정하였고, 이를 기반으로 한국어문화교육에 있어 고급단계 학습자를 위한 문화 항목 선정 시 고려해야 할 점을 제시하였다. 또한 한국어문화교육의 교육 자료로서 신문을 제시하면서 교육 자료로서의 장점과 활용방안, 교육 내용을 제시하였다.
3장에서는 2장에서 제시한 문화교육 항목과 신문 기사의 주제들을 비교하여 한국어문화교육에 활용될 수 있는 신문의 내용들을 선정하였다. 또 더 나아가 한국어문화교육에 있어 고급단계 학습자를 위한 문화 항목 선정 시 고려해야 할 점을 더하여 고급단계 학습자를 위한 교육 항목을 구체적으로 제시하였다. 이러한 항목들을 효과적으로 교육하기 위한 방법으로 주제 중심적인 교육 방법과 프로젝트 활동을 제안하고 실례를 들었다. 또 2장에서 살펴본 신문의 구성과 기사의 종류, 신문의 제작 과정을 활용하여 신문을 활용한 수업에 있어 다루어질 수 있는 과제와 활동들을 정리, 개발하여 보였다.
4장에서는 3장에서 논의된 내용을 종합하여 고급단계 학습자를 위한 학습 목표와 주제 중심 접근법과 프로젝트 수업 방법을 통합한 교수요목을 제시하였다.
5장에서는 앞의 논의들을 다시 한 번 종합하여 요약하고 본 연구의 제한점과 앞으로의 연구 방향을 언급하였다.
앞으로 한국어 학습자를 위한 문화교육에 있어서 일반적으로 통용될 수 있는 기준과 항목들이 정립되고, 효과적인 교육 방법과 다양한 학습 자료들이 더욱 많이 개발되어서 다양한 목적으로 한국어를 학습하는 학습자가 더욱 효과적인 의사소통을 할 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
