주변 어디에도 국어 생활이 급속도로 변해가고 있다는 것을 부인할 사람이 없을 정도로 그 모습들을 흔히 관찰할 수 있다. 대화를 통해서 실제 경험하기도 하고 책이나 텔레비전, 라디오, 인터넷을 통한 매체를 통해, 그리고 각종 간판이나 교통 표지판 등에서도 국어 생활의 변화를 살펴볼 수 있다. 이러한 환경 속에서 우리는 고유어보다 외국어, 외래어를 알기 위해 노력하고 더 나아가 마치 암호를 해독하듯 알 수 없는 은어, 비속어, 유행어, 통신어를 알아내려고 애를 쓴다.
본 논문에서는 이렇게 우리말이 외면되는 우리의 국어 생활을 반성하고 국어 순화를 생활화하기 위해 중학교 교과서 『생활국어』의 내용을 재구성했다.
그 중 『생활국어』의 문법과 관련된 단원을 살펴본 후, 어휘 영역의 내용과 구성을 분석했다. 그리고 그 분석을 통해 문제점을 제시하고 이에 대한 개선점을 제안했다. 왜냐하면 어휘는 음운론, 통사론에 비해 상대적으로 사회적 상황에 쉽게 영향을 받아 변질되는 정도도 크지만, 그러한 성질로 인해 본래의 상태로 되돌리기도 쉬운 만큼 처음부터 변질되지 않도록 관심이 필요한 영역이기 때문이다.
곱고 아름다운 우리말 어휘를 우리가 직접 사용한다는 것 자체로도 의미를 찾을 수 있지만, 아름다운 우리말이 한민족(韓民族)을 하나의 민족으로 묶어주는 역할을 하기에 국어 순화 교육은 체계적이고 효율적으로 이루어져야 한다.
그동안 사용했던 외국어, 외래어, 은어, 비속어, 유행어, 통신어를 아름다운 우리말로 바꿔 사용하고, 새로운 문물에는 우리말을 창의적으로 만들어 사용해야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 우리말에 대한 사랑과 우리말을 일부러라도 사용하려는 의식과 노력이 필요하다. 왜냐하면 아무리 국어 순화를 위한 좋은 방법과 교재가 있더라도, 그것을 사용하는 우리들의 마음가짐이 갖춰지지 않는다면 이런 노력은 고요 속의 외침이나 다름없기 때문이다.
본 논문에서 제시한 국어 순화와 관련된 현 『생활국어』 교과서의 문제점과 이에 대한 개선 방향이 학교 현장에서 이루어지는 국어 순화 교육에 조금이라도 도움이 되길 바란다.

The use of Korean language is undergoing a dramatic transformation undoubtedly. People experience the changes in daily conversation, books, Internet, TV and radio. They are easy to find on signboards and traffic signs as well. People get frequently exposed to foreign language and words of foreign origin. Also, they learn slangs, newly coined terms and drastically abbreviated words that are used on the Internet. They can sometimes sound like code language.
The objective of this study is to re-organize contents of a middle school textbook for ‘Practical Korean Language’ in order to teach right usage of Korean language and to prevent abuse of the language. Firstly, grammar chapters are examined, followed by analysis of contents and organization of vocabulary chapters. Based on the analysis, related educational issues are raised along with proposal for improvement. Compared to phonology or syntax, vocabulary is more strongly influenced by social condition and thus easier to change. It means that it is also easier to restore distorted vocabulary. It is important to pay attention to ensuring correct use of vocabulary.
Being able to use native language is valuable in itself, and even more than that, Korean language plays a pivotal role in bringing Korean people together. Thus, education on the desirable use of Korean language needs to be done in a systematic and effective manner. It is important that we endeavor to replace incorrectly used foreign words, slangs, vulgar expressions, grammatically flawed words with sound Korean words. We need to make up new Korean words for newly invented or introduced ideas and things. To do so, we need to make conscious efforts to use Korean language and cherish it. Without on-going effort and progressive attitude, restoring correct use of Korean language is impossible even with the best methods and textbooks. The analysis on the current problem of Korean language textbooks and suggestions for improvement is expected to contribute to providing education for the better use of Korean language at schools.
