This study is focused on Korean textbooks which are made by Korean universities’organization for foreign language learners, and how they are used in class. The researcher chose Korean beginner’s textbook to analyze whether cultural education is being done properly and to emphasize the need for developmental substitutes for culture education. Until late 1990s, Korean education was mainly focused on Korean. However, Korean Wave has increased the number of foreigners wanting to learn the Korean language. So the text books for foreigners to learn Korean has increased in and out of Korea. As we tried these various text books, we soon came to a conclusion that foreigner’s priority in learning Korean was ‘communication’.
Therefore, the education for culture, became very important in Korean education process. As ‘culture’ has become the key point in the Korean language education, it is important to treat Korean as a foreign language so as to improve the education.
To do this, it is important to study cultural education from the perspectives of both teachers’, students’ and the text book itself.
We decided that this teaching material is the crucial connection between a teacher and a student. Thus, we mainly focused our study on these text books. Even though lots of research based on cultural education are being done since late 1990s, the content in the textbooks about culture is still insufficient.
For these reasons, chapter 1 shows the necessity to research cultural education in Korean Language textbooks. It also shows the summaries of related discussion. Chapter 2 discuss the important cultural notions that we need in Korean education and discussion on Korean culture education. The necessity of research on how cultural education is being handled in Korean language text books is also shown in this chapter. Chapter 3 presents what kinds of subjects and standards are used to analyze text books. Then, analyses of the cultural clause in Korean beginner’s tex book according to the standards mentioned in Chapter 2 are also presented.
The first reason to this analysis is to find out whether the education on culture in the text book has exceeded the mere function of delivering basic information and being useful in communication, as well as to check the composition of the text book. The second reason is to find out problems of Korean language education based on this analysis. Chapter 4 shows how to solve these problems based on the analysis on Chapter 3 and suggests developments on supplementary data as one of a solution. Lastly, Chapter 5 summarized the result of the study mentioned in the research.
As the number of foreigners who want to learn Korean are increasing, I hope that my study help them to succeed in their learning without too much difficulty. Also this study will make a contribution to the rightful education of Korean culture by expending communication, not just by delivering basic information.

본 연구는 국내의 각 대학 부설기관에서 제작하여 외국어로서의 한국어 교육현장에서 실제 사용되고 있는 한국어 교재 중 초급과정을 대상으로 문화교육이 적절하게 이루어지고 있는지 분석해 보고 문제점을 개선하는 방안으로 문화학습 보조자료 개발의 필요성을 밝혀 한국어 교육 현장에서 보다 효과적인 교재로 발전하는 방안을 제시 하는데 그 목적이 있다.
90년대 후반 한류의 열풍을 시작으로 외국인의 한국어 교육 수요가 붐처럼 급증하면서 한국인 학습자 중심으로 이루어졌던 한국어 교육은 큰 전환점을 맞이하게 되었다. 이에 따라 외국인 학습자를 대상으로 한 교재의 필요성이 대두되면서 국내는 물론 국외에 이르기까지 한국어 교재들이 봇물처럼 쏟아져 나왔다. 이 교재들은 실제 교육현장에서 여러 차례 시행착오를 거치면서 보다 성공적인 한국어 교육을 위한 움직임으로 외국인 학습자의 목표언어는 의사소통을 위한 것이라는 이론이 반영 되었다. 따라서 한국어 학습과정에서 문화교육의 중요성이 부각되어 현재 외국어로서의 한국어 교재 개발에서 문화교육은 핵심 키워드로 다루어지고 있다.
이렇게 과거와는 확연히 달라진 한국어 교육 환경에서 외국어로서의 한국어 교육이 발전하고 학문으로 정착하기 위해서는 교사, 학습자, 교재 연구가 중요하다. 그중에서도 수업이 이루어지는 학습 현장에서 교사와 학습자의 학습효과를 극대화시키는 매개체인 교재는 매우 중요하기 때문에 본 연구는 한국어 교재를 대상으로 연구해 보았다.
한국어 교육에서는 1990년대 중반 이후부터 문화에 관심을 보이기 시작하여 최근에는 문화교육에 대한 연구가 쏟아져 나오고 있다. 그 결과 문화교육에 대한 필요성에 대한 인식은 점점 커지고 있는 반면 한국어 교재 내 반영되고 있는 문화교육의 내용은 교사나 학습자가 만족할 만한 교재가 아직은 없다는 것이 현실이다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 1장에서 한국어 교재 내 문화교육 연구의 필요성과 목적을 밝히고 아울러 선행연구에서는 본 연구와 관련된 문화교육 교재에 관한 그동안의 논의들을 검토하여 요약 제시해 보았다. 2장에서는 한국어 교육에서 필요한 문화개념과 한국어 문화교육에 대한 논의들을 살펴보면서 외국인학습자를 위한 한국어 교재에서 문화교육이 실제 교재 내에서는 어떻게 반영되고 있는지에 관한 연구의 필요성을 밝히고자 한다. 3장에서는 교재를 분석하는 데 있어 대상 및 분석 기준을 밝히고 초급단계 한국어 교재 내 문화항목을 2장에서 살펴 본 한국어 교육 문화항목 분류 기준에 따라 분석하였다. 교재 분석의 1차적 목적은 한국어 교재의 문화항목을 분석하여 교재 내 다루어지고 있는 문화교육이 기본적인 정보전달 측면을 넘어 의사소통에 도움이 되도록 적절하게 다루어지고 있는지, 학습자가 이해하기 쉽도록 구성되어 있는 지등을 알아본다. 2차적 목적은 연구한 분석 결과를 토대로 한국어교육 현장의 문화교육의 문제점을 알아보고자 한다. 4장에서는 3장의 분석을 토대로 하여 한국어 교재 내 문화항목 도입 방안을 제시하고 한국어 문화교육을 위한 부교재 개발방안을 예시로 제안해 보았다. 5장에서는 이 논문에서 다룬 연구 결과를 요약 정리해 했다. 점차 늘어나는 외국인 학습자들을 위한 한국어 교육이 시행착오 없이 모두 성공하기를 희망하면서 단편적인 지식 전달에 그치는 문화교육이 아니라 소통을 위한 바람직한 문화교육으로 나날이 발전하기를 기대해 본다.
