This aims to analyze the syntactic-semantic properties and the function of discourse which causal connective endings and causal conjunctive adverbs of Korean have, and at the same time to research how Chinese learners of the intermediate Korean acquire the causal connective endings and causal conjunctive adverbs in Korean. The major research method of this thesis is to collect the translation data and the free writings of the learners and to analyze them.The research motivation and purpose of this thesis are as follows: First, Korean and Chinese are languages of two different types in that Korean is an agglutinative language while Chinese is an independent language. Therefore, the Chinese learners who study a distinctive language from their mother tongue will inevitably make mistakes when they use the causal connective endings and causal conjunctive adverbs of Korean. I am curious about what kinds of mistakes they will make in this respect. Through the research of this question, we may catch a glimpse of how the type of native language affects the acquisition of the second language. Second, the conjunctive endings and adverbs of Korean are the discourse markers connecting clauses or sentences. Whether one can correctly use the conjunctive endings and adverbs reflects the learner’s command of Korean. This thesis is composed as follows: The second chapter, based on the previous researches, discusses about the differences of causal connective expressions in Chinese and Korean, the former being the native language of the Chinese learners and the latter being the target language for study. In addition, this chapter also deals with the influence of the native language on the acquisition of second language from the perspective of second-language acquisition. It also touches upon the theory of interlanguage. This chapter paves the way for the analysis of how well Chinese learners use the causal connective endings and causal conjunctive adverbs of Korean and what mistakes they make. The third chapter elaborates the research object, process, results and discussion of this research. The research method is as follows: first, take the students of the level-3 and level-4 classes in the Korean Language Education Center of Silla University as the objects and send out translation task. The translation task involves the Chinese-Korean translation of sentences with causal relationship. In order to avoid the influence of locality and environment during the survey, free writings of intermediate learners of Korean in the Korean Language Education Center are also collected. The results of the analysis can be divided into “how well they use the conjunctive endings and adverbs” and “what mistakes they make.” First, analysis will be made in terms of the translation and free writings. A contrastive analysis is followed. Finally, the conclusion will be drawn from the analysis. The fourth chapter, as the conclusion, summarizes the research results of the and points out some drawbacks of the in view of the research object and research method. I hope that this will contribute to Korean language teaching by letting more people understand how Chinese learners of intermediate Korean master causal connective endings and causal conjunctive adverbs and applying it to the formulation of advanced teaching plan.
