The goal of English education is to acquire the ability to communicate in English. The aim of this thesis is to find effective methods to develop communicative competence of Korean leaners of English through teaching English to emphasize suprasegmentals rather than segmentals. It is also to present the importance of stress and intonation in communicative language teaching and to propose effective methods for teaching English stress and intonation to Korean learners in English learning.
Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the thesis. It presents the important and theoretical justification for English pronunciation teaching. Chapter 2, general properties and theoretical backgrounds of English pronunciation teaching are presented. It overviews the history of English pronunciation teaching from A.L.M(Audio-lingual method) to C.L.L(Community language learning). In chapter 3 the importances of English pronunciation teaching to improve communicative competence and some scholars' views about communicative competence were dealt with. In addition, I also tried to find out differences of English and Korean sound systems, which may cause difficulties to Korean leaners of English. Chapter 4 defines the major technical terms which are dealt with in the study focusing on stress and intonation. Chapter 5 provides various activities for stress and intonation teaching. These activities are presented according to a framework for teaching pronunciation stages based on Celce-Murica, Brinton and Goodwin(2010)'s studies. In teaching the pronunciation of English, it is necessary to make good use of those activities.
In conclusion, most importantly, students should have more opportunities to practice their pronunciation in communicative activities, and teachers should act as facilitator and as an advisor during interactive activities. Further, to achieve the goal of this study, it is very important for teachers to be aware of what to teach, and how to guide student. I hope that this can help teach stress and intonation effectively to improve communicative competence of English learning.

영어교육의 목표는 의사소통을 하기위한 능력을 획득하는 것이다. 이 연구의 목적은 한국인 영어 학습자의 의사소통능력을 향상시키기 위해 분절음보다는 초분절음에 대한 발음 교육으로 효과적인 지도 방법을 연구하는 것이다. 특히, 의사소통을 위한 언어 교육에서 강세와 억양의 중요성에 대해 다루었고, 영어 학습에 있어서 영어 학습자에게 강세와 억양을 중심으로 지도방안을 연구하였다.
제 1장에서는 이 연구에 대한 간단한 소개와 함께 영어발음교육의 가치와 중요성을 제고하였고, 제 2장에서는 영어 발음 지도에 있어서 일반적인 특징과 이론적인 배경을 알아보면서 청화식 교수법에서 의사소통중심 교수법에 이르기까지 시대적 흐름을 기술 하여 흐름을 알아보았다. 제 3장에서는 의사소통기능을 원활하게 하기위해서 영어발음 교육의 중요성과 의사소통능력에 대한 여러 학자들의 견해를 살펴보고 개념을 정립하였으며 개념 정리를 통해 의사소통능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 방법을 연구하였다. 그리도 또한 의사소통에서 문제를 일으키는 영어와 한국어의 음운체계를 비교해 분석하고 영어 학습자들에게서 나타나는 발음의 오류를 예측하고 제시하고자 했다. 제 4장에서는 강세와 억양에 초점을 맞추어 주요 기능들을 정의하고 강세와 억양의 중요성을 인식하고자 관련된 이론을 기술 하였다. 제 5장에서는 효과적인 의사소통을 위한 발음지도 방안으로 강세와 억양지도를 위한 다양한 방법으로 Celce-Murcia, Briton, 그리고 Goodwin(2010)이 제안하는 발음지도 단계를 따라서 구체적으로 제시하였다. 그리고 발음지도에 있어서 이런 활동들은 균형적으로 활용하는 것이 필요하다. 결론적으로, 학생들은 의사소통적 활동 속에서 그들의 발음을 연습할 기회를 많이 가지는 것이 가장 중요하며, 이때 교사는 상화작용 활동의 촉진자 또는 조력자로서의 역할을 수행하는 것이 좋다. 더 나아가서 이 연구의 목표에 도달하기 위해서는 교사는 무엇을 지도할지, 학생들에게 어떻게 안내할지에 대해서 잘 인식하고 있어야 하는 것이 중요하다. 이 논문이 의사소통 능력 향상을 위해 강세와 억양을 지도하는데 있어서 도움이 됐으면 한다.
