본 연구는 재외동포를 위한 한국어교재 『한글학교 한국어』(2008년)와 『맞춤 한국어』(2010년)에 대한 분석과 재외동포 학습자들을 대상으로 한 요구분석 결과를 바탕으로 그 개선방안을 제안하는 것에 목적을 두고 있다. 교재는 교육 자료로서의 역할뿐 아니라 교육 과정 자체로서의 기능을 담당하기에 교육에 있어 매우 중요한 요소이기 때문이다. 재외동포를 대상으로 하는 한국어교육은 민족적 정체성 확립, 다민족 사회에서의 하나의 구성원으로서의 역할, 세계 시민으로서의 역량과 시민 감각 습득이라는 목표를 지닌다. 이를 위해 정부기관을 중심으로 1985년부터 다양한 교재를 개발하여 교과서를 무상으로 공급하기 시작하였고 비교적 최근에 개발, 보급된 교재가 위 두 교재이다.
두 교재를 비교분석한 결과 두 교재 모두 학습 목표가 제시되어 있지 않아 교재를 이용하는 교사와 학습자들에게 명시적인 학습의 방향을 제시하는데 어려움이 있었으며 제시된 담화 상황이 그리 폭넓지 못하고 다루고 있는 어휘의 수와 문법, 문형 등이 국내 한국어 교육과정에 비해 다소 제한적이라는 문제를 안고 있었다. 또한 재외동포 학습자들을 대상으로 한 설문조사에서 학습자들은 주말 학습의 부담감, 연습 기회 부족, 지루하고 수준에 맞지 않는 교재로 인해 어려움을 겪고 있었으며 한국어 학습에 있어 쓰기영역을 가장 어려워했다. 또한 듣기/말하기 연습, 한국 문화와 사회적 이슈, 풍부한 시청각 자료 등이 교재에 추가되기를 원하고 있었다.
이상의 분석에 토대를 두고 보다 효율적이고 체계적인 재외동포 한국어 교재를 위한 몇 가지 방안을 도출하였다. 우선 단원별 학습목표가 구체적으로 제시되고 교수요목의 위계화가 필요하다. 또한 교재에 반영된 담화상황이 더욱 현실적이고 다양하게 구성되어야 할 것이며 어휘 학습의 효율성도 높여야 한다. 교재에 다양한 문화적 요소가 반영되고, 과제활동 및 워크북 개발을 통해 학습자들의 자발적 학습 의욕을 고취해야 할 것이다. 다양한 시청각 자료의 개발, 보급도 지속적으로 이루어져야 하리라 판단된다.

This study aims to analyze 『Hangeul Hakgyo Korean』 (2008) and 『Matchum Korean』(2010) - Korean language textbooks for overseas Koreans - and to suggest improvement plans. Textbooks play an important role not only as educational resources but also for education process itself. Korean language education for overseas Koreans has aimed to secure national identity, to play a role as a member of multinational society, to acquire capacity as global citizen and to obtain sense of citizen. For this purpose, the government institutions developed various textbooks from 1985 and supplied them free of charge. The above two texts are those developed quite recently.
When these two were analyzed, both suggested no clear study goal that might give difficulties of suggesting clear learning objectives to both teachers and learners. And the suggested discourse situation is not extensive enough and very restrictive compared with those in Korea in terms of vocabulary, grammar and sentence type. And, in a questionnaire survey to overseas learners, they felt burden of learning on weekends, lack of practice and boring and unsuitable textbooks. In particularly, they felt hard for writing sections. And they wanted to add listening-speaking practice, Korean culture and social issue and rich audio-visual data in the textbook.
Based on the above analysis, this study suggested some plans for the Korean textbooks for overseas Koreans. First of all, the learning objective must be suggested clearly and the clear hierarchical system for detailed item is required. And the discourse situation in the textbook must be more realistic and various with heightened efficiency of vocabulary learning. Various cultures are needed to be reflected in textbooks and task activity and workbook needs to be developed to improve independent learning willingness. Various audio-visual data development and distribution is also recommended.
